"Remus?" Sirius's voice was small, unsure – a far cry from his usual confidence. He cleared his throat, trying again, but Remus didn't even twitch.

He sighed. Quietly, he slipped out of bed and tip-toed to Remus's, sliding in next to him.

Remus, sensing the shift in weight distribution, cracked his eyes open. He was already turned to face Sirius, and when he noticed he was there he frowned, rubbing at his eyes and sitting up on an elbow. "Siri? What's wrong?"

Sirius didn't say anything for a few moments, just moving closer and pushing Remus back down, resting his head on his shoulder and wrapping his arms around him.

Remus sighed softly, gently running his hand through Sirius's hair. "It's all right, Pads, it's all right. Whatever it is, you can tell me."

"I know," he mumbled softly, snuggling closer. Remus had showered that night, and he smelled like scented soap and shampoo. It was wonderful. "It's my mother. She wrote again."

He frowned deeper. "I thought you weren't going to read those anymore."

"I wasn't. She sent it last month. I knew I should have burned it as soon as I got it. But…but I didn't."

Sirius wasn't sure if he wanted to say the next part, didn't even want to admit it to himself, no matter how true he knew it was. "I think I'm half-hoping that her motherly instincts will kick in and she'll apologize and beg me to forgive her."

Remus couldn't help but smile, leaning the side of his head against Sirius's. "We both know that'll never happen. She doesn't have a motherly instinct in her body. I'm still not even sure she's human. I'm rather convinced she's some sort of mountain lion-Chimera hybrid doing a terrible job at acting like a woman."

"Oh, Remus." Sirius smiled into his shirt, already feeling some of the grief lifting off of him. "I'm glad you never met her. Although if she knew I was best friends with a werewolf, she would have kicked me out first year."

"'How dare you befriend a filthy half-breed! Not to mention a Gryffindor! At least go find a half-goblin Slytherin or something!'"

Sirius snorted, quickly covering his mouth as another came out. "I think most of the Slytherins are goblins, to be honest. Especially that Flint bloke. There is definitely something wrong with him."

"You got that right." Remus chuckled, laying his head on his pillow and patting Sirius's chest. "Feeling better?"

"Much." He smiled, sighing contently and closing his eyes. "I love you, Remus. Even if you are a filthy half-breed Gryffindor."

"I love you too, even if you do pass rumors around that I have a feral rabbit. Now go to sleep before I sic Fluffy the bunny on you."
