Hope everyone enjoys this update! Thanks for the feedback.
After arriving home that evening, Callie sat in her apartment, completely confused about what to do. She was truly enjoying the time she was spending with Arizona and she loved Kendall and Bryce as if they were her own. That's why she hated this job. Well, she loved her job, but she never had the time or energy to try and date anyone. The only people she met were children, their birth families, and foster families. Plus, she was hardly ever interested if the opportunity for a date presented itself. However, a pretty blonde named Arizona had fallen into her life, making recent decisions rather difficult.
Giving up, Callie put the beer she was drinking down and went to grab her current reading pleasure from the bedroom. By the time she got back to the living room, her cell phone was ringing. "Hello?"
"Callie! I don't know what's wrong. He isn't breathing right and his head is really hot. I think I'm going to bring him to the emergency room."
"Arizona? Slow down. I'm sure everything will be alright. Stop panicking. I'll meet you at the hospital."
A half hour later, Arizona sprang out of her seat when she saw Callie walk through the emergency room doors. She threw one arm around the Latina, while the other clutched Kendall's. "I'm so happy you're here. Bryce is with the doctor right now. I don't know what I did."
Sighing, Callie squeezed Arizona to reassure her. "Sweetheart, kids get sick. You didn't do anything wrong."
"I told her that a zillion times," responded Kendall.
Callie couldn't help but laugh. "You should listen to pint size here," she recommended, waiting for the inevitable argument.
"Hey! What's pint sized? It doesn't sound too good!"
Before either adult could respond, the doctor arrived in the waiting room. "Ms. Robbins?" Comfortably explaining that Bryce would be just fine, the woman wearing the white lab coat and scrubs gave a playful wave goodbye to Kendall and walked back through the administrative doors.
"Told ya soooooo," Kendall sing-songed to Arizona, little hands on her hips and eyes shooting playful daggers at her foster mom.
Callie snorted and placed a hand over the four-year-old's face. "Oh, you shoosh. You're lucky your foster mother cares so much."
"She is the best!" Kendall agreed, taking off for Arizona's arms when the adult knelt down for a hug.
"You're the best!" Arizona copied, poking Kendall in the nose before picking her up. "You and your brother."
"Can we go see him now?"
Nodding, Callie and Arizona took Kendall back to Bryce's room where he was currently being discharged along with antibiotics and recommendations for a follow-up in 72 hours.
"Zoa!"
Arizona stopped mid-sentence glanced up the stairs. "Why aren't you in bed, Kendall Jane?" Getting up and walking to where she could see the top landing better, Arizona gave her best 'mom' look.
"Um...I missed you?"
Laughing, Callie joined her and shook her head. "Smooth, kid, smooth."
"Why are you still here?" Kendall grilled, very bluntly, trying to get herself out of trouble.
"Because I'm calming your Zoa down. Now, bed."
"Bed, she said," Arizona added, winking when Kendall giggled.
"Fine!" the little girl huffed and turned to walk to her room, but not before remembering her reason for getting Arizona's attention in the first place. "Oh! Bryce needs you."
Smiling, Arizona told Callie she'd be back down in a few minutes and ran up the stairs after Kendall who giggled madly and playfully slammed the door to her room. First re-tucking the energetic child back into bed and kissing her on the forehead, Arizona then made her way into Bryce's room. "Hey, buddy. You okay?"
"Head ouchies, Zo," he whined, immediately squirming and reaching for her when she walked into the room.
"Alright, bud. Close your eyes," requested Arizona as she began to play his hair and hum. "You'll feel a bit better after some sleep."
Bryce's eyelids soon became heavy and he looked up to Arizona. "Love you, ZoZo."
"I love you, too, Bryce."
Within minutes, Bryce was asleep, still cuddled close to Arizona. She carefully untangled herself and made her way downstairs once again, not prepared for the sight that greeted her. Callie was sitting on the couch with both legs up and her head resting against her shoulder, fast asleep. Carefully making her way over, the blonde tapped Callie on the shoulder, effectively waking her up. "Guess I'm more tired than I thought," she mumbled, apologetically.
"That's alright. I don't mind considering I kept you at the ER hours past when you could have been home, relaxing."
Smiling softly, Callie shook her head back and forth "Part of my job, right?"
"As a social worker or as a friend?" Arizona blurted, immediately blushing when she realized what she had said out loud. "But, um, it's getting pretty late. I don't want to keep you."
Slowly rising and trying to hide a grin, Callie put her shoes back on. "I'm glad you called me tonight. I'm here whenever you or the kids need me, professional or personally, but keep it on the down low, okay?"
Giving her a salute, Arizona followed the taller woman, opening the door for her. "Thanks, Calliope. I know I overreacted, but you can never be too careful with kids."
"Don't apologize. I'd much rather have you care too much than too little. And no need to thank me." Before she could think about what she was doing, she placed a quick kiss on Arizona's cheek and left the house without looking back.
"So," Mark began, sitting down across from Callie, who was reorganizing a few files.
Raising an eyebrow, Callie ignored him. "Go away, Marcus."
"Oh, please. Hand a file over so I can make it look like I'm doing my job while I grill you about the sexy ass blonde you're banging."
Whipping the top file off her pile and slamming it against Mark's head, Callie glared. "I'm not 'banging' her, you pig."
"Sorry, sorry, my apologies. The gorgeous blonde you are making passionate love to."
Seeing a co-worker walking past the table she was spread out at, Callie managed to not retort for a few seconds until the coast was clear. "You're still a pig. A clueless, dirty pig. A pig and an idiot. I'm not banging, fucking, sleeping with, having sex with, sexting, making love to, or any of the above with Arizona Robbins."
"Then you're the idiot," he deadpanned.
"Excuse me?" Callie snapped, no patience left for her best friend.
"Why aren't you doing all of the above with blondie?"
"Because I'm her foster children's social worker and I don't want to A – lose my job, B – hurt her, or C – hurt those kids."
Slowly nodding, Mark allowed them to work in silence for the next few minutes. When his self-control ran out, he cleared his throat rather obnoxiously. "Listen, those are all good reasons and you're a better professional than I am, but I still think you should reconsider. Otherwise, I stand by my statement that you're an idiot."
Sighing, Callie pushed the file she was working on into the middle of the table. "I need a lunch break."
Shock spread across Arizona's face that evening as she finished clearing up from dinner and saw a text from Callie flash across her cellphone's screen. After closing the dishwasher and putting the water filter back into the refrigerator, she quickly glanced behind her to the den to check on Kendall and Bryce. Despite not feeling well, the little boy had trudged through the day and was bottling up energy from being cooped up inside. Currently, the siblings were finishing a game of Hungry, Hungry, Hippo. Assured that both children were safe and entertained for the moment, the blonde plucked her phone off the counter and swiped across the lock screen.
'How is Bryce feeling?'
Smiling, Arizona typed a quick 'he's okay! Getting better' and attempted to make her way into the den to gather the kids for a movie in her room. However, a subsequent ding made her stop and again stare down at her phone.
'Not that I'm not happy he's doing well, but I'm going to be honest with you and stop pretending I text you solely to see how Bryce is.'
Without having a chance to answer, Arizona's phone went off again.
'I did some consulting at work today and I'd really like to talk sometime soon. About us.'
Blushing madly, Arizona text back, promising to call once both Kendall and Bryce were asleep. In the meantime, she needed to find a way to distract both her racing heart and head. "Munchkins!" she called, grinning when two almost identically curious faces stared back at her from a room away. "Who wants to snuggle in bed and watch a movie?"
"Not that I'm not completely and totally into you or anything, but don't you think we're moving really quickly from consulting about our relationship to fucking in the backseat of your car?" Arizona panted, in between kisses, as Callie's hand continued to creep its way up her shirt.
"Sh," she half-ass reassured and assaulted the blonde's neck with her mouth.
Moaning, Arizona tried to turn her brain off and enjoy the moment. After all, she was the one who ended up in the parking lot of Callie's company. Keeping her promise, the two had talked well into the night the prior evening, in the end deciding to give their relationship a true shot, with strict promises to do everything in their power to keep the kids from being negatively impacted. Keeping Bryce and Kendall home from daycare again today, Arizona had been relieved to see Bryce's fever go back down to normal and in an act of impulsivity, called Teddy to come watch the kids for an hour or two. Rushing to explain where she was headed without having her best friend grill her, Arizona promised to go into detail later and had quickly provided hugs, kisses, and goodbyes to the kids before maybe speeding a bit to Callie's job.
Finally pulling back when she realized the woman below her was distracted, Callie pulled them both up into a sitting position and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. "Sorry," she cringed, reaching over to fix Arizona's hair.
"Please never apologize for ravishing me like that," Arizona snorted, linking her hand with the other woman's. "I just don't want us to get caught up and have sex for the first time in your car, where you park for work, with security cameras probably videotaping us."
"Oh, god," Callie realized, laughing, embarrassed. "Thank you," she breathed out, "for being the responsible one today."
"My not-so-pleasurable pleasure," was the response she got in return. "Sorry for dropping in on you like this. I just really wanted to see you after last night. Thank you for going through all the trouble and anxiety of talking to your boss. I'm still not 100 percent sure there is a way to do this without ending up hurting the kids one way or another, but…I'd like to try."
"I promise Kendall and Bryce won't get hurt. There's no way I would even consider being with you if I thought they would."
Already trusting and believing every word out of Callie's mouth, Arizona felt some weight lift off her shoulders. "I really like you."
"I really like you, too," the brunette promised. "What do you say I treat you to a cup of coffee on my way back inside? There's a sophisticated and worldly little coffee shop a la a cart in the lobby."
Laughing, Arizona fixed her shirt and followed Callie out of the car. "Sounds perfect."
