The Impossible Possibilities of Love
Chapter 10

Kagome awoke with her head laying against a hard chest and felt an arm around her waist. Light snores came from above her and she lifted her head up, seeing Inuyasha's relaxed face. She smiled lightly as she remembered their conversation before she fell asleep. She had fallen asleep on him before, but this was the first time he had ever stayed the night. She tried not to read too much into it.
She adjusted herself a bit and moved her arm around his waist. A peek at the clock showed it was only eight in the morning. Kai wouldn't be awake for at least another hour—if she was lucky. She settled her head back on Inuyasha's chest and relaxed. Her mined wandered back to the date from hell she had last night.
Her brow furrowed as she thought about what Shin had told her. She didn't understand what Yash was playing at when he told Shin that he was Kai's father. Sure, people asked that question before, considering how much time he spent with Kai and how attached the two were to each other, but they had never confirmed it with anyone.
'Though, he is the closest thing Kai has to a dad…' She thought to herself. It wasn't the first time that particular thought had flashed across her mind. If she was honest, these last few months it had been a constant on her mind. Inuyasha gave his all to Kai, practically revolved his day to day activities around Kai in fact. He was at her apartment so often now, that her neighbors had asked if he lived with her. They also pretty much thought the same thing Shin now thought.
At the thought of Shin, Kagome lifted her head and narrowed her eyes at the man sleeping peacefully under her. She pinched him lightly on the arm, but it was enough to wake him up. He shifted under her and his arm tightened around her waist.
"Is this your idea of foreplay baby?" Inuyasha asked sleepily as he slightly opened his eyes to look at Kagome. She pinched him again.
"Why did you tell Shin those lies last night?" She asked him deciding to be straight-forward about it. A smirk spread out on his face and he let out a small chuckle.
"The guy was a total lame. Not good enough for you or Kai; you need a manly man." He joked with her. She narrowed her eyes at him and sat up on an elbow.
She raised an eyebrow. "What does that have to do with telling him Kai was your son?" Inuyasha looked confused for a moment and then chuckled.
"Oh, you meant that. Because he is my son." He answered hugging her to him again. She lifted back up and looked at him quizzically.
"What do you mean, I meant that? What else did you tell him?" Kagome asked. She had a faint clue, but wanted to hear it from him.
Inuyasha looked serious and stared her straight in the eye. "How do you think he knew to go dutch and take you skinny dipping?" He asked her.
Kagome felt her face turn red as anger began boiling her blood. He was the reason she had such a shitty night! "Why the hell would you do that?!" She yelled at him, attempting to move away from him, but he tightened his arm around her waist.
"Do you really need to ask Kagome?" The tone of his voice surprised her. It was soft, like he was really curious. She pushed her anger to the side and actually thought for a minute. Why would Inuyasha want to push away her date? He'd been nothing but great to her and Kai these past few months. She'd come to think of him as somewhat a second best friend, though she kept some secrets from him.
"If you have to think that hard, then you obviously don't know." Inuyasha said with an irritated tone. Kagome looked down at him confused. He sighed and slightly sat up, still holding her to his side. He looked out the window seeming to contemplate his words.
"You and Kai are important to me. I'm not going to sit back and let some little shit like Shin take that away from me." He said, his voice full of conviction as he continued to stare out the window. Kagome stiffened in place, her mouth slightly parted before leaning up and away from him. She heard him sigh loudly as she sat back on the opposite end of the couch.
"Inuyasha?" She questioned softly. She wasn't sure what to think of his previous statement. He sat up straight and looked her in her eyes, a serious expression on his face.
"Kagome….." He paused and looked away from her before looking back again. "Kagome I want to adopt Kai."
'He…what?' Kagome thought to herself as her mouth dropped open. Inuyasha leaned closer to her and wrapped one of her hands in his.
"I've been thinking about this for a while now and I want to do this." He said with determination. "I love that kid as if he really were my own and honestly fuck his genetics. Kai is my son in every way that counts and…..please Kagome. I don't want to lose him."
Kagome could feel her eyes watering as she stared into his pleading eyes. She knew he and Kai had a bond, but she never realized just how strong it was until now. She put her other hand on top of his and squeezed, giving him a watery smile.
"Yash, I would never take Kai from you. You two have a bond that I never imagined my son would have with another male, but you gave that to him and I'm so grateful to you." She blinked away a few tears. "I—I would never dream of taking you out of his life Inuyasha."
Before she knew what happened, she found herself held tightly against his chest with his head buried in her neck. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his torso and squeezed. The two stayed that way until the baby monitor on the table began to crackle with Kai's morning blabber.
Kagome pulled back and gave Inuyasha one more smile before she stood and walked out of the room to check on Kai. Inuyasha took a deep breath and prepared the second part of his speech in his mind. The easy part was asking Kagome if he could adopt Kai, but there was more that he wanted….
After a quick run to the bathroom, Kagome grabbed Kai and gave him a diaper change before going back into her living room. Inuyasha looked up as the two entered and he stood to grab the infant that was already reaching for him.
"Say hi daddy." Kagome said softly to her son as she passed him to a wide eyed Inuyasha. He took the boy in his arms and kissed his cheek before turning to Kagome.
"Kagome….." It came out as barely a whisper, but held so much emotion. Kagome felt her eyes water again and began to blink the unshed tears away. This was a happy occasion.
"So, uh, I'm not sure how to go about this at all. I'll have to call Sango and get her advice." She said as she headed towards the kitchen. "I'll get him a bottle and start breakfast for us. Oh, I left you a toothbrush on the sink in the bathroom. I wasn't sure if you wanted to stay….."
Inuyasha chuckled to himself as he watched her disappear into the kitchen, still rambling to herself. A loud cooing noise brought his attention back to the little guy in his arms and his smile widened. Kai would soon officially be his son. He would truly be a father. The thought had crossed his mind in the past, but he never really considered it until a raven haired beauty stumbled into his life.
Inuyasha was brought out of his thoughts by the sound of his phone ringing. He strapped Kai into his bouncer and switched it on before grabbing his phone and answering without looking.
"Yo."
"How dare you keep something like this from your own mother!" Inuyasha quickly snatched the phone from his ear as his mother yelled a few choice words at him.
"Mom—" He tried but was immediately cut off.
"Don't you 'mom' me! How dare you keep this from me!" She continued to yell. "And of all people, I had to find out from her!"
"Mom what are you yapping on about? And who is 'her'?" He asked with the phone still a good distance from his ear.
"IYANA! Of all people how could you tell her before you even told me?" He heard his mother sniffle on the other end and began to panic. What was she going on about?
"Mom, please, I don't know what you're talking about…." He pleaded.
"My baby boy got married and didn't even tell his mother. And all this time Kai was really yours?" She whispered still sniffling. Inuyasha immediately felt guilty for not explaining things sooner. He meant to tell his mother about the arrangement he and Kagome had made, but had never made the time to.
Sighing, Inuyasha brought the phone back to his ear. "Mom listen….I wasn't hiding anything I promise. Look I'll come over in a bit and explain everything."
"You're damn right you will! And bring my grandson and daughter in law!" His mother snapped before he heard the line go dead. Inuyasha looked down at his phone and then at the child giving him a very knowing look.
"That's creepy Kai. Looks like we're taking a trip." He said picking up the baby and heading to his nursery. "Hey Kagome, you might want to make that breakfast to go."
-X-
"So you mean to tell me that you two met the day she went into labor and you signed your information on the birth certificate?" Izayoi asked for the fifth time. Inuyasha rolled his eyes and Kagome nodded in answer.
Once Kagome and Kai had gotten dressed, they made a stop by Inuyasha's apartment so that he could shower and change before heading over to his parents. They were now seated in the family room with his mother and father, having given them the full story on how they met.
"Well, my son is an idiot but welcome to the family Kagome." Taisho smiled warmly at her and chuckled at another eye roll from his son.
"Thank you but we're getting a divorce once we straighten out the birth certificate any—"
"No!" Izayoi yelled cutting off Kagome's statement. "You are in this family now missy. Accept it and hand me my grandson." Izayoi stood and grabbed Kai from Kagome's outstretched hands. "Come on sweetie, let's go take some pictures in grandma Izzy's garden."
Taisho watched his wife walk away talking to Kai before he turned to Inuyasha and Kagome. "So, what do you both plan to do? She isn't giving that kid up."
"Dad, I want to adopt Kai. He's my son and I want to make it legal." Inuyasha said without a shred of doubt. The more he thought about it the more he wanted it.
"Are you okay with this Kagome?" Taisho asked her. "You really would be part of the family then. You and Kai."
Kagome smiled at Taisho and nodded. "Yes. Inuyasha is right—Kai is his son in every way that counts, we should make it official."
"I'm glad to hear that." Taisho smiled at the young woman. The longer he got to know her, the fonder he grew of her. "Will the father be a problem?"
Before Kagome could speak Inuyasha answered for her. "She was artificially inseminated dad."
"Good. I have an old friend, he's a great family lawyer and can get the ball rolling on this for you. We'll just need the information for your insemination to get started."
"Oh…" Kagome said biting her lip. 'Shit, shit, shit!' How was she supposed to come up with nonexistent papers?
Taisho raised an eyebrow at her. "Will that be an issue for you?"
"No, not at all." Kagome shook her head and smiled. Taisho smiled back and excused himself to go make a call leaving the two alone.
Kagome stood and was about to excuse herself to see what Izayoi was up to when a hand on her wrist stopped her. She looked up to find Inuyasha standing next to her. He pulled her until she was standing directly in front of him.
"Inuyasha?" She asked. Her brows pulled together in confusion. She didn't understand the look on his face….
"I just wanted to thank you. You know, for not taking Kai from me. For letting me do this. Thank you." He smiled down at her causing a smile of her own to come forth.
"Of course I wouldn't take him from you. You're the only father he's known Yash. I can't imagine you not being in his life."
"What about you? Can you imagine me not being in your life?" His eyes searched her face as her brows drew together.
"I don't understand. If you're in Kai's life then of course you'd be in mine…" She trailed off as a smirk appeared on his face.
"You seem confused Gome, let me help you with that."
She was barely able to process his statement before his hand was on her cheek and his lips were gently touching hers. Her eyes widened before easing closed as her body unconsciously moved closer to him. Inuyasha wrapped his arm around Kagome's waist holding her tighter against him while his other stayed on her cheek. Kagome found her hands slipping into his hair as he deepened the kiss, an attempt to show his feelings without words.
Kagome got the message loud and clear, but in the back of her mind she wondered if she were making a mistake….
'How do I tell him about Kouga?'
