A/N: Ooookay, so when I said I wouldn't wait eight months to update, it's obviously because I meant it was gonna be longer. I AM REALLY SORRY OKAY But I've been watching Soul Eater again lately and thus regained my inspiration and as such have been working on this chapter the whole weekend and ta-da! Here it is! I am super sorry for being shit at updating in a timely fashion and I hope you guys are still interested in this story.

On that note, things really begin to pick up in this chapter, so yeah.

As I mentioned in chapter one, this fic mainly follows the Soul Eater and Soul Eater Not! canons. If you haven't read the spin-off series, Soul Eater Not! I would suggest doing that, since Kid and the sisters' back story is explained a little more. This fic is my interpretation of what is left unsaid.

Warnings: Language mostly

Disclaimer: I don't own Soul Eater. This fic was written solely to entertain.

Catching a Falling Knife

"Th'bus' late, sis."

Liz ran an exasperated hand through her still slightly damp hair before pulling her still half-asleep sister against her. "Yeah, I know it is. Just stay cool. It'll be here soon. It's probably late 'cuz of the weather."

Had the circumstances been different, Liz might have been grateful for the torrential downpours predicted to fall over Brooklyn for most of the day. It was a welcome change from the brutal heatwave of the past week. However, rainy weather was not ideal for a getaway. Though in all honesty, Liz thought with a somber smile, the weather did befit the ire and desolation she and sister were both feeling.

What a crap situation they were in.

With ever-present paranoia nestled in the back of her mind, Liz looked around them for the thousandth time since they sat down, on the look out for the black suit, golden eyes, and the empty eye sockets of a skull brooch that she was sure were hiding just within the lines of the shadows in the alleyways. Or around the corners. Or on one of the rooftops.

He could be anywhere, watching us right now and we'd have no idea.

Liz rubbed her eyes tiredly.

Two hours of sleep was all she had managed to steal for herself. Most of the night was spent sitting on the edge of the old bunk bed, burning a hole in the run-down carpet with her stare while Patty shifted fretfully in her sleep. As long as her sister could rest, uneasy as it may have been, Liz was okay with keeping watch. Her mind was racing too fast and hard to sleep anyway.

She had caught her reflection in the mirror just before they left the shelter that morning. Dark circles under her eyes and ashen skin were the product of a night of restlessness, and now the humidity of the rain was giving her a hell of a migraine. Just one more annoyance to add to her list of problems.

"Hey mister, what times'it?" Liz heard Patty mumble to the middle-aged man seated just next to them. The man clutched his briefcase tighter to his chest, stammering random nonsense as he pointedly looked away from the wild-eyed glare Patty was giving him.

Liz frowned. "What the fuck, asshole? My sister asked you a simple question."

The man shrank back behind the upturned collar of his trench-coat, arms trembling. "Please, I-I don't want any trouble." He quickly said, scooting over to the other side of the bench.

Liz growled and stood up. "If you don't want any fucking trouble, then just answer the damn question." She snapped as she loomed over him, too tired to care about causing a scene. "We just wanna know what time it is, okay?" She muttered hoarsely before sitting back down.

"It-it's 10:48! So please, don't hurt me!" He shouted nervously.

"We won't do anything, just shut up already. My sister's tired and you're being annoying." Patty said heatedly, with unspoken threat in her tone. The man nodded quickly and shifted away, leaving the two sisters in peace. After that, the bus stop fell silent for a long while, with Patty holding her sister against her, smoothing her hair down soothingly as Liz grabbed a little of the rest that had eluded her that night.

The elder Thompson sister had been out for nearly fifteen minutes when Patty discreetly elbowed her in the side.

"Liz…I think we should go now." Patty whispered. Liz sat up straight, rubbing her face tiredly. "Why, what's wrong?" She groaned.

Patty said nothing, instead shifting her eyes quickly to something across the street before looking back at her sister pointedly. Liz followed her sister's gaze as inconspicuously as she could. Parked about halfway down the block from them was a black town car with black tints on the windows and the headlights on.

Liz sighed, nodding slowly. "We should definitely move. Come on. Don't look back."

The two sisters stood up from the bus stop, and with as little urgency in their movements as they could manage, they began walking the opposite direction. It was when they made to turn a corner that Liz took a quick behind them. Of course, the black car was following them, inching along some thirty feet behind them.

"Shit." Liz muttered under her breath.

Despite everything, Patty giggled into her hands. "Looks like someone wants their ring back, huh?" She said, laughing loudly. Her mirth was acute and somehow infectious. Liz chuckled as they quickly rounded another corner. "Tch, yep. Looks like it."

They were on to them. She was at her wit's end. No more reason to play it safe. If they were going to go down, they were going to go down fighting. Liz grabbed her sister's hand.

"Fuck it, Patty. Let's give'em the slip."

With that, the two sisters bolted down the street. Behind them, they both heard tires squealing against the wet pavement of the road, as well as shouting and guns being fired.

"Move, dammit!" Liz shouted as she shoved her way through a group of girls around her age who were walking up the street.

"Hey!"

"Dude, what the hell?!"

Their shouts and spilt coffee cups on the sidewalk were simply an afterthought in both of the sisters' minds as they ran blindly down the street. The engine of the town car was a constant whirring just behind them, as were the bullets that ricocheted off of mailboxes and into the bricks of the buildings around them.

"This way!" Patty shouted before suddenly tugging Liz into a random alley. It was dark and dank and as they ran, Liz had this sinking feeling in her gut that Skullboy, as her and Patty had taken to calling their nameless Goth assailant, was waiting for them just behind the fence that lay ahead of them. At that moment, a bullet whizzed past her head, nearly taking her left ear with it, and shattered what remained of a broken window.

Liz decided then that he was definitely the lesser of two evils right now.

"Up on the trash can, hurry!" She heard Patty shout from somewhere in front of her. The younger sister was half-way over the fence when Liz clambered onto the bin and up onto the fence.

"Shit, they're getting away!" A deep, guttural shout came from one of the men chasing them, followed by a loud gunshot. Liz felt a sudden burning pain on the back of her leg as she fell over the fence and onto the hard, wet ground.

"Crap…o-ow…"Liz groaned, a pained tear trickling down the side of her face as she laid there, clutching her leg to stop the bleeding. Just out of her line of sight, She saw her sister's familiar blonde bob, followed immediately by Patty's face inches from hers, shouting something unintelligible.

She was getting dizzy.

"..p, Liz…"

"What?"Liz murmured through their soul resonance.

"Come on, sis, we gotta go! Turn into your weapon form and I'll carry you! Hurry!"

Liz nodded, still dizzy, but shifted into her gun form. With her sister now safely tucked away in her pocket, Patty ran to the end of the alleyway, just as the two goons managed to scramble over the fence.

"Patty," She heard Liz call after a while.

"Yeah?"

"Make a right turn up here. I know a place we can hide."

Patty nodded and did as instructed. When she was sure she had put enough distance between herself and the goons, she settled back behind a crate and untucked Liz's gun form from her jean pocket. It took a moment for Liz to change back, but when she did, the older Thompson sister immediately fell back against the wall, still clutching her leg.

"How bad is it?" Patty asked worriedly as she scooted closer to see the wound.

Liz gave a faint but pained smile. "Not bad. It just grazed me. I promise it's not as bad as it looks. I just got so dizzy when it happened because it hurt like a mother…well, that and plus I'm already tired. And hungry…shit."

Patty laughed quietly. "This is really our day, isn't it sis?"

The two sisters shared a short, miserable laugh together. It really was shaping up to be a grand day.

"Do you think we lost 'em?" Patty asked after a moment. Liz shook her head.

"Hell no. They're not far. Look there." Liz said, pointing further up the block where the street ended at the city docks. "You see those warehouses? We're gonna make a run for it on three. "

"Are you okay to run?"

"Yeah, I'll be fine. Let's do this."

Patty took a long, deep breath. "Okay. One."

"Two."

"THREE!" The two sisters both shouted and made a mad dash down the block. As they ran, Liz looked back behind her for any sign of the guys chasing them or the black car. She saw neither. At this point, it was unclear whether that was necessarily something to be happy about or not. Either way, they made it to the warehouse in a matter of minutes and immediately ducked inside through a large hole in the side where the metal had rusted through.

It was surprisingly dry inside the warehouse despite the gaping hole in the side of it, but the sisters were glad all the same. The last thing they needed was to get sick from running around in the rain and then taking shelter in a dirty, wet cesspool of a warehouse.

Liz sighed tiredly as she rung out her hair. Now that had a few minutes of peace, she noticed with no small amount of annoyance and disgust that her entire right side was covered in water and grime from when she fell in the alley. With a frustrated growl, Liz tore off her dirty jacket and tied it around her waist.

"…Goddammit…" She muttered angrily under her breath.

"Lizzy?" She heard Patty call from somewhere further inside. "Yeah?"

"We have a problem. A big one."

Liz frowned at her sister's tone; something about it was off, even for Patty. As Liz walked to where she heard Patty, she noticed that everything suddenly seemed brighter. She looked up. The lights weren't on, so what was going on?

"Patty, what's happeni…o-oh...boy…" Liz trailed off when she finally arrived where Patty was. Patty was looking back at her, eyes wild and slightly panicked. Behind her, a row of black cars blocked the other exit to warehouse. Their high beams were all on, making it difficult to see in front of them. But beyond the blinding lights, she could just make out the forms of dozens of large men, armed with equally large guns.

"Fuck…" Liz cursed. Her knees were beginning to buckle. She leaned against a railing, lest her legs give out from under her.

"Thompson Sisters, I finally caught up to you two lousy bitches." A deep, accented voice called from behind the battalion of Mafiosi. A round, short man emerged in the center a second later, the light refracting off of his bald head.

"You have somethin' that belongs to me," The Don began, the sleazy grin on his face belying the murderous intent in his tone, "And I would like to have it back."

"I don't know what you're talking about." Patty quipped suddenly, hands tucked in her pockets innocuously.

"My ring, you little cunt!" The Don snarled, the smile sliding off his face in an instant. "Where is it!"

Patty giggled wildly. "Up your ass, that's where!" She shouted, completely fearless. Sometimes, it legitimately baffled Liz at how easily Patty could go from docile to maniacal. But this, this was just plain suicide.

"P-patty," Liz stammered, feeling nauseous all of a sudden, "We should run."

Despite the line of armed men pointing their guns at them, Patty turned to her older sister with a soft smile. "It's gonna be okay, Liz. Just turn into a gun and go to sleep. Let me take care of this."

"You sure?"

Patty nodded. "I'll be fine. Just go to sleep for a bit, sis."

Liz frowned but nodded anyway, shifting into her gun form after a moment of hesitation.

"Alright, if that's how you want to play it, you fucking bitches are dead!" The Don shouted, motioning to his men to take aim and fire.

"Bring it on, you sons of bitches!" Patty screamed, waving her gun wildly.

But before even one bullet was fired, a new, albeit familiar voice cut in from behind the mafiosi.

"I beg your pardon, but I need those two alive. It would be much appreciated if you refrained from killing my targets."

At the sound of his voice, Patty's arm fell limply to her side, all bravado gone. "Are you kidding me?" She muttered to no one in particular, but Liz still managed to catch it.

"Patty, what's going on? Are you okay?" Liz asked worriedly. Patty gave an incredulous chuckle. "Just when our day really couldn't get any worse."

Through their soul resonance, Liz looked around, from the gang, to the bright lights behind them, to the even less welcome visitor who made his way around the gang to stand between them and the sisters.

"Move boy, those two stole something from me, and they need to fuckin' pay."

"Well sir, my needs supercede yours by a considerable margin, so no. I will not move. By the authority of DWMA, these two belong to me now, so take your men and leave."

The Don's face was nearly purple with rage. "You little shit! Who do you think you are, talking to me like that? Do you know who I am? My gang is the strongest in New York, dammit! I run this fuckin' city!"

"Well my father is the God of Death, so I'm pretty sure I top you in the cosmic hierarchy."

Patty didn't really understand what was going on at that moment, but she understood quite clearly, just by their body language, who it was that had the upper hand right now. And it certainly wasn't the Don, or his boys. In fact, the Don was beginning to sweat through his expensive suit, and she could see that he was trembling a bit too.

But her curiosity quickly moved to 'Skullboy'. He was standing a ways from her, hands tucked in pockets like nothing about the current situation they were in could possibly be dangerous. He looked completely at ease despite the barrage of weapons pointed at him, so much that she dared to think that he might've been a little bored. That must've been what Liz meant when she said that he was condescending. Patty didn't really know what that word meant in dictionary terms, but from the way it seemed almost as if he was toying with their present enemy, not hesitating for even a second to make the Don look more and more like a fool, and frankly just acting like this was all beneath someone like him, Patty figured that had to be the word to describe what she was seeing.

"What's he doing here?" Liz growled suddenly from somewhere to her left, back in human form. Patty shrugged, still too intrigued with the boy and the Don's argument (which, shockingly enough, had not yet resulted in any gunfire) to answer her sister.

"Look,"Skullboy began, exasperation evident in his tone, "I think I've made myself quite clear already. You can't touch them. Whatever they took from you is irrelevant. I'm ordering you to take your men and leave them to me."

While the Don shouted something unintelligible in response, Liz crept up to her sister and began to tug her away slowly towards the opposite end of the warehouse where they came in. But before they could duck out of sight, a sharp command stopped them in their tracks.

"Don't you dare move. I'm done chasing you two around this city." Skullboy snapped before turning back to the Don. "If I can't make you comply with words, then clearly my only other option is brute force."

The Don laughed obnoxiously. "Oh please, a puny little shit like you? What the hell can you do to me?"

"A helluva lot, obviously." Patty muttered to her sister as they watched the carnage unfold. Liz just nodded dumbly in agreement, too shocked at how amazingly fast and graceful their mysterious skull boy was as he proceeded to kick the shit out of everyone.

"We actually tried to outrun this guy?" Patty asked Liz at one point.

A few well-aimed punches, kicks, and weirdly sassy backhands later, Skullboy stood on top of the unconscious bodies of a dozen or so hit-men and gangsters, looking down at them with relative placidity, as if this was all in a day's work for him.

"Ladies," He began calmly after a moment, "I believe we got off on the wrong foot. Firstly, I owe the two of you an apology for yesterday. It wasn't my intention to scare you or anything, but-"

"What the hell do you mean, we belong to you now? Who the hell do you think you are?" Liz cut in suddenly, arms folded defiantly across her chest. Patty stood next to her, hands folded innocently behind her back as she simply observed their would-be 'savior'.

"Exactly what it sounds like. As you can probably ascertain from recent events, I came to this city looking for a pair of human pistols known as the Thompson Sisters. I came with the sole intention of ending their crime spree and to bring them to my father to receive judgement for the aforementioned crime spree."He said simply.

"Are you a bounty hunter or something?"

He shook his head. "No. I am simply carrying out my duties as the son of Death. Now, I'm sure you have many questions, so I'm willing to answer them, right after I've properly entered the two of you into my custody."

"Fuck that."

"Excuse me?"

"Sorry Skullboy, but that's not how this is gonna go down. You don't get to just show up, beat a couple of assholes up for us and then think you own us. Me and Patty aren't going anywhere, especially without you answering our questions first."

A tiny smirk graced his features suddenly. "Skullboy?"

Patty pointed to her neck. "Your neck thing is weird. What are you, some kind of devil-worshiper or something?"

"No…?" He said, a strange look on his face. "In any case, I suppose I should properly introduce myself. My name is Death the Kid."

The two sisters stared back at him before turning to each other. "And I thought Billy Bob was a dumb name." Patty whispered into her sister's ear. "Yeah, no kidding." Liz said back before facing him again.

"So let me get this straight, your name is Death…the Kid…?"

"Yes, that's correct."

"Okay. Why?"

The boy, now known as Death the Kid, sighed loudly. "Well there is no way to explain that without first explaining everything else. I represent DWMA, the school that my father runs. DWMA specializes mainly in the monitoring, training, and rehabilitation of human weapons, like yourselves. We also act as a policing organization that keeps the amount of weapons running around and using their abilities to cause trouble, again, such as the two of you, in check. My father has had the two of you in his sights for a long time now, and finally dispatched me to bring the two of you in."

Liz frowned. "So your daddy runs a school for people like us, and he wants us to join. Does he think he's Charles Xavier or something? Me and my sister are fine the way we are. So piss off." With that, Liz grabbed her sister and turned to leave.

A sudden chuckle however stopped them dead in their tracks.

"Perhaps I haven't made myself completely clear. I'm not here to convince you to come with me. The two of you, the Thompson Sisters, are my targets. You're not getting away from me again and you are coming back with me to DWMA. You don't have a choice."

Patty gave him a dirty look. "And what if we don't wanna?"

Kid stepped down from the pile of unconscious bodies, a knowing smile tugging the corner of his mouth upward.

"Well, it goes like this: Either the two of you come back with me willingly, or I simply kill you right here and take your souls into custody. That's as much of a choice as you're going to get, so I suggest you comply."

"Our souls? What the hell are you on, man?" Liz sputtered.

Kid looked at her oddly. "What am I on? I'm not on any drug if that's what you mean. I came here as a representative of my father, Lord Death, and-"

"Dude!" Liz shouted incredulously, "Do you not hear yourself? Because it sounds to me like you are on some high-octane, 'melt-your-brain-into-pudding' dope, okay? Your dad is a Death God? You're so full of shit. Stay away from me and Patty."

"If I was indeed as 'full of shit' as you say I am, how could I possibly have known about you and Patty to begin with? How could I have known exactly when and where to find you?" Kid asked calmly as he stepped closer, stopping directly in front of the two sisters. "And surely you are aware by now, with me knowing all that I know about the two of you and such, that it was no coincidence that you targeted me for a robbery?"

Liz said nothing, though the deepening of her frown told Kid that she had been privy to that fact already and he had just confirmed it for her.

After a few tense seconds, Liz reached for Patty's hand and held it tight.

"Well, I'm not a hundred percent convinced about the the whole 'Death God' thing, but...what happens if we go with you?"

Kid tucked his hands back into his pockets. "I will present you to my father, and he'll decide what to do with you then."

"Will he kill us?" Patty asked.

"If he feels that you deserve to die, then yes. But it's not set in stone that you're being carted off to your deaths, so please don't take what I'm saying as a death sentence. However, if you refuse to leave with me right now, there is no question. I'll kill both of you."

Despite his warning, Kid's face softened somewhat. "And besides, I have a proposition for the two of you that might benefit all of us. It's something I've had in mind since I saw you," He said, motioning to Patty, "handling your sister in her weapon form earlier."

"And what's that?"

"Do you know what a Meister is?"

Both of the sisters shook their heads.

"A Meister is someone trained by DWMA to handle a human weapon. As a shinigami, I am not currently enrolled at DWMA, nor am I obligated in anyway to become a Meister, but I am entitled to have a weapon if I choose to."

Liz stepped closer. "What are you saying, exactly?"

"Well, I am a man of unique aesthetics and interests, and as such my quest for the perfect weapons has been a lengthy one. However, I feel that that quest is now complete. Given your dubious histories, I know very well that I am trying to catch a falling knife here, but I want to make the both of you my personal weapons."
