Jason's POV
I let out a grunt as I followed Lilly into a warehouse. For over an hour we had been patrolling the city, trying to stay in the dark and out of sight, waiting for something to happen. I knew we shouldn't be doing this but I wouldn't have been comfortable if I'd let her go alone. I needed to know she was safe though I could already knew the trouble we would be in when we got back...or Mom found us.
When I had gone back to my room to get my jacket I had also written a quick note to Mom, grabbing my sister's water pouch on the way back to explain my delay. I had hoped she'd find us before we found trouble but it looked like it wasn't going to happen. A few blocks back, we had spotted a group of masked men, half orange and half black masks that caught Lilly's attention.
Quietly we went in through a broken window, avoiding the creaky beams as we looked down to watch the masked people stand up straight, like soldiers. I grabbed Lilly's arm, asking her to stop when another masked person came into view. He was a lot bigger than the others, his mask more detailed. It wasn't hard to guess that he was their leader.
The man paced back and forth saying something I couldn't quite get before pulling out a long blade, like the ones my mom had used and throwing it in our direction. I pushed Lilly out I the way but she toppled down, hitting the floor, hard.
I quickly went down, checking to see if she was okay as the group surrounded us. My little sister groaned as she moved to lay down on her back and I helped her stand, getting into a defensive stance. I wasn't about to let them hurt her. Before they could attack, glass shattered above us and I covered Lilly, looking over.
Mom.
She moved with swift precision, striking the masked man's goons down with an almost deadly force. I helped my sister up, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"Take her and get the hell out of here!" Mom yelled, blocking one man only to send him flying across the room with a kick to his chest.
I knew better than to argue. And I knew once Mom returned home we'd be in serious trouble.
I turned to lead Lilly out but she wouldn't budge. "We can't just leave her here," she told me urgently, pulling away from me so that she was standing on her own.
I let out an impatient sigh before nodding and helping Mom by sending a powerful fire blaze kick at one of the masked men's chest, knocking him against the opposite wall. Mom sent me a glare before grabbing the arm of another goon and twisting it around, flipping him onto his back. The leader of the squad stepped forward, drawing out the other dao blade.
"Mom!" Lilly called before throwing her the blade the man had earlier thrown at us.
The blades crashed into each other and for the first time in years I actually felt afraid for her. She was a powerful Bender and skilled fighter, but the man she was up against also knew how to fight. He cornered her and I made a move to help but she used her Airbending to get him off her before swinging the blade at his face, knocking the mask back.
Moms eyes widened slightly, saying something I couldn't catch. The man looked over at us, his left eye covered by a patch, his hair combed back, and a short beard decorating his chin. Lilly tugged my mom's arm and I reluctantly followed.
Slade's POV
I grit my teeth behind the mask as our dao blades clashed.
Twenty years. I had waited twenty years to come face to face with her again. Our fight continued as my men fended off her children, and I could see they were the reason she was off. Family, such a vulnerability for people like us. She swung the blade at me again but I blocked it, lowering her hood to reveal her face. The same face that betrayed me all those years ago.
With a blast of air she managed to push me back before swinging the blade and knocking my mask off. I saw the look of surprise on her face, a flicker of something in her eyes. So she remembered me. Good.
"What are you doing here?" the Avatar finally asked.
"Twenty years ago I made you a promise, remember?" I answered. "I am here to fulfill it."
She stepped away and I allowed it, letting her children and her escape. It wasn't the last she would be seeing of me, and she knew that. I was a man of my word. I always kept my promises.
*Flashback*
Shado was dead...she was...
I hadn't wanted to believe it. When the guards told me, I attacked them, calling them liars. But they gave me the bloody shirt she had been wearing and the necklace I had made for her. I had broken down in tears. But those tears easily turned into anger, anger towards whoever had taken her from me. Shado was a great fighter, one of the best on this Spirits forsaken island. Who had killed her, and how?
I was surprised when I found out who it had been. Korra. The kid I had taken under my wing, taught her how to use a knife...
I immediately went to look for her, finding her in her cell with Howl, her mentor, another protector. Different emotions flickered in her eyes as she saw me come inside. She already knew what I was doing there. I grabbed her by the hair and dragged her out as Howl yelled at me to stop, unable to come to her aid because of her injuries.
"I-I was just protecting myself," the kid pleaded when I tossed her inside my cell. Her hands were up, telling me she didn't want to fight. "She-she wanted to hurt me."
"I don't care."
"I know she was you girlfriend but she was hurting me. I just wanted her to stop...she wouldn't stop." Tears fell down her cheeks, her eyes haunted because of what she had done. I almost felt pity for her. Almost. "You know I had no choice!"
"I don't care," I answered pulling out a knife.
I knew the rules. I knew about how the guards would take us to a secluded island and make us kill each other. Someone always had to die. Always. But it was no excuse. Others could have died. Not Shado.
"I'm sorry," Korra repeated, her voice cracking. I didn't say anything and she shook her head, falling to her knees. "If you want to kill me...just do it."
I scoffed at that. "Killing you now...would be a mercy," I began as I approached her. "You cannot die until you have suffered the way I have suffered. Until you have known...complete despair," I added, my voice cracking. "And you will. I promise."
Korra's POV
"Korra, what happened?" Mako asked as we walked into the living room. I didn't answer as my mom started to heal both Lilly and Jason. I was furious at the fact that they had disobeyed me. I felt something cold and wet against my cheek and I jerked my head away only to have it follow. "It's ok," he soothed.
"Mom?"
I didn't turn to look at Jason as Mako continued to clean the cut on my cheek. I hadn't even noticed it.
"Mom, I'm sorry we disobeyed you." I could already tell that he was ready to shoulder the blame for both his and Lilly's lapses in judgement. I said nothing, trying to regain control over my anger.
"Please, Momma," Lilly begged. "Please just let me explain..."
"What is there to explain? You disobeyed me, put yourself and your brother in danger," I snapped. "I know he isn't a little boy anymore but I hope you realize what could have happened had I not gotten there in time. Or what could have happened while I was there."
I was fuming. When I had arrived home and found Jason's note, I had immediately bolted out, hoping to find them before they got into any trouble. Of course I had arrived too late and found them fighting against Slade. I hadn't seen him in twenty years but I already knew what he wanted: revenge. So my children's act of stupidity to even confront him in the first place had my blood boiling.
"Momma..."
"Am I so horrible? Am I really such a terrible mother?"
"Mom - "
"I must be if you constantly see the need to disobey and go behind my back," I continued. My daughter opened her mouth to speak but I held my hand up, turning it into a fist before turning away. "Go to your room. I can't...I can't talk about this right now."
I stayed with my back towards them, but I could feel their gazes. My mom came over to me, squeezing my hand tightly before leaving and I finally allowed myself to sigh, feeling more tired than I had in years. A hand rested on my shoulder and I turned, my Firebender's arms wrapping around me.
"What happened?" he asked quietly.
"Did you read the note?"
"Mmhmm. Saw the newspaper clippings too."
I sighed in response. "It was Slade."
"Slade?"
I pulled away, crossing my arms over my chest. "I knew him from the Boiling Rock. He-he taught me how to fight."
"Why is he here?" I lowered my gaze but my husband made me look at him. "Answer me, Korra."
"To take away everything and everyone I love."
Mako blinked at this. "Why?"
"Because I took away what he loved." I shook my head, looking up at him. "I killed the love of his life."
Mako sighed, resting his chin on top of my head.
Jason's POV
I covered my face as I laid down on my bed. It had been years since I had seen my mom fight, years since I had been reminded of what she could do. For so long she had become a new person, been happy...and everything could have ended today had she crossed that line. The door to my room opened and I raised my arms long enough to see it was my sister before covering my eyes again.
"Bubba?" she called as she sat on the bed.
"What?"
"Are you mad at me?"
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "No...I'm just disappointed...in you and myself."
I should have known better. I was the oldest. I shouldn't have let Lilly talk me into going into town as the Blue Spirit. But I just...I knew she'd do it anyway, with or without me.
The door opened and my mom came in , jaw clenched, body tense. It had been a while since I had seen her that upset. My sister and I sat up quietly. I couldn't even meet her gaze.
"I'm very disappointed," Mom began. "You willingly jumped into a dangerous situation that could have taken a fatal turn on either side. With that being said, I forbid you from ever doing anything like that again. Not to mention that you're grounded until further notice."
"Mom, we were just trying to help," Lilly replied.
I shook my head. This was not the time to provoke Mom.
"You're sixteen years old. Your job is to study for school. Catching masked mercenaries is Beifong's job."
"You're not listen-"
"No, you're not listening," Mom snapped. "I am trying to protect you. Slade-" She paused, clenching her jaw. "That man is dangerous. And you're going to stay away from him."
"I'm sixteen, Mom," my sister answered. "I'm not a little kid anymore. You lied to me about Bubba, about being in a prison. And about being the Blue Spirit, so don't talk to us like we're the only ones doing something wrong here."
"Watch your mouth, young lady," Korra replied, her voice nearly a growl. Couldn't really blame her. Lilly was really pushing her buttons. "I am your mother and I say you're going to forget about today. Is that understood?"
"No."
"Lill..."
"No, Jason. You may be afraid of Mom, but I'm not." Why couldn't she just drop it? "The city needs the Blue Spirit, and I'm going to give it to them, with or without your blessing. Now you can help us or we'll do it my way."
Mom walked over to my sister and I half expected her to raise her hand and smack her like I knew she wanted to. My sister had completely crossed the line today, but as much as I knew Mom hated to admit it...
"I'm my mother's daughter," Lilly added softly. "I want to be like you."
Mom clenched her jaw, hands turning to fists before turning around and heading for the door, some steam coming off her, evidence of her anger.
"The old ProBending arena, tomorrow after school. Don't be late."
Who was that man? And why did he let us get away?
Lilly's POV
I knew not many people crossed mom and lived to tell the tale, but I couldn't just do nothing. Admittedly I had crossed the line and I'm surprised mom handled it...better than I thought. If the steam coming off her was anything to go by. She wasn't happy about the path I had chosen, but I think she knew I was right. The city needed the Blue Spirit, at least while this Slade guy was here.
After school, Jason picked me up and we headed over to the old Pro Bending arena, a place I knew had a lot of memories for Mom. We went around back and found the door unlocked, going inside to find the center with light. I took a moment to watch as Mom Waterbended, the water soothingly going around her, bending at her will before she put the strip down and asked us to come closer.
"Doing this you're going to make enemies," she began once we reached her.
I nodded. "I know."
"It won't be like sparring with your brother or even me. The people you'll be up against won't hesitate in killing you."
"I know." A pause. "Mom? What did it feel like...when you had to take a life?"
Mom lowered her gaze, turning around to give her back to us, leaning against the table. Jason gave me a pointed book and I sighed. So again, maybe I shouldn't have asked that...
"I did things, Lilly," mom began quietly. "Things that I am not proud of...But at the time and in the circumstances I was in...It seemed like the right thing to do. I didn't kill out of pleasure. I killed because those people where out of control and they could hurt people...and I couldn't let that happen."
"I understand."
She managed a smile before giving us a tour of her old training grounds. Once she finished I decided to stay with her, watching her run her routines, hardly breaking a sweat. Jason had left us alone, probably sensing that I had things I wanted to talk to her about. After a couple of hours she finally stopped, her long sleeve shirt soaked as she headed towards me and I handed her a water bottle. We stood in silence just starring at each other before I sighed and stood.
"The newspaper articles talked about how you were a party animal," I began. "Then on how you became the Blue Spirit. But…there's a five year gap. Is that when you were training in here?"
There was a flicker in mom's eyes at this and she turned away, leaning against the table. I had tried asking dad, gran gran and gran dad, but they all gave me the run around, simply saying that she had been away. Even Howl, Aunt Asami and Uncle Ollie wouldn't tell me anything.
"When I was teenager…I made a lot of bad choices," mom began quietly. "I was such a selfish immature spoiled brat and I hurt people, people who cared about me." A pause. "I just didn't care."
"Mom-"
"I was in a prison for years," she continued her voice wavering. "I was beaten, tortured, saw so many people die and I couldn't do anything to save them. The guards enjoying watching me twist in pain when they'd beat me or stab me, never a mortal wound. They wanted to see me suffer."
"I-I didn't mean-"
"You need to know what you are getting yourself into," mom said cutting me off again turning to face me.
Slowly, hesitantly she pulled the sweaty shirt over her head and I let out a gasp at the sight. Her entire body was covered with scars, scratches, burns and all kinds of other marks on her skin. She turned around and I saw a large burn on her lower back, an exit wound of what looked like a bullet hole and marks of a whip. Her left arm was burned which explained why she always wore the long sleeve gloves. I blinked back the tears, having to turn away.
"This life is not a pretty one," Mom continued when it became clear I wouldn't say anything. "It's not as glamorous as you might have thought. You will have to make sacrifices for it if you choose to continue." She now stood in front of me, and I realized I hadn't heard her move. My mother waited till I looked back up and met her gaze, her cobalt eyes staring intently into mine. Yet, there was still a softness. "Do not make a decision about this life lightly."
"I won't," I whispered in reply before hugging her tightly.
Jason's POV
My sister whimpered as she laid down in her bed, trying to get in a position where she wouldn't feel the soreness we were both feeling. Of course I had seen this coming. Mom wasn't just going to let us be vigilantes, she was going to train us so we wouldn't get caught.
"Everything hurts," Lilly moaned.
I chuckled, wincing when it agitated my sore muscles. "You didn't think Mom would take it easy on us, did you?"
She scowled, turning on her side to face me. We shared a moment of comfortable silence and I thought she had fallen asleep. "Bubba?"
"Hmmm?"
"How was Mom before I was born?" she asked.
"What?"
"You said she was different when I was born. How was she before?"
I took in a deep breath at this, remembering how Korra had been when I met her. "A little distant," I replied. "She was always training or with me. Everyone critized her. Everyone except me. She took care of me as best she could."
"And Dad?"
"He's the reason the expression 'brooding Firebender' came to be," I said with a laugh. "Dad has always been pretty compassionate and the way he looked at mom...you could tell he loved her."
"So how does Uncle Ollie come into all of this."
I sighed. Of course. "He dated Mom. I wasn't a big fan."
"Really?" my sister asked, letting out a whimper when she turned to look at me. "Why is that?"
I shrugged, the muscle protesting as it did. "I just liked Mako better." I paused. "She changed for you, Lilly. Mom wanted to be the best parent you could have. Try not to be so hard on her."
"I know," Lilly answered quietly. "But I got her to train us. I admire Mom. She's the strongest person I know."
I smiled at that. "Yes she is."
Lilly's POV
Mom was seriously trying to kill us. Or get us to quit. Everyday she'd work us, had us do all sorts of conditioning exercises, never getting to the fighting part which I was itching for. I knew she was an excellent fighter if what I saw a month ago was anything to go by. I couldn't wait till she taught me a thing or two, by for now it was another set of chin-ups.
After my third set I almost collapsed on the floor, panting and trying to catch my breath. Who knew Mom could be such a slave driver?
"Okay, now that warm ups are over, let's get down to business."
I tensed, looking at my mother in disbelief. That was the warm ups? That's why she had been making us do all of this stuff? I held back a groan as I followed her to the mat, suddenly not so excited to begin the sparring session.
I moaned as I lay down on the bed, my muscles not wanting to move as I felt the bruises form. Never in my life had been tossed that many times on the floor when sparing. My brother was practically limping after practice and I couldn't really blame him. Mom was making her point quite clear by working us to the ground as Howl watched, this smug smile on his face.
I heard a knock on the door and I asked whoever I was to come in, not wanting to jostle my body anymore. However, I did let out a whimper when whoever it was sat down next to me.
"Hey, you okay?" mom asked.
"Great. My bones just feel like jelly and I can't even feel my body anymore."
A chuckle. "I'm sorry about that." She rubbed gentle circles on my back and I sighed, feeling myself relax. "I told you this wasn't going to be easy."
"Are you doing this to make us quit?" I asked.
"Not entirely." Well at least she was honest. "But if you're going to be sneaking out at night, you might as well know what you're doing."
"Oh, so I am going to be able to sneak out?"
"You still have a curfew and it won't be during school night."
"Really?" I asked managing to look at her. "I'm going to be able to do some damage and I can't stay up past what?"
"One. You still have homework to think about."
I grumbled in response. "Who needs school anyway?"
"A detective. If you still want that as a cover."
I sighed and nodded, feeling myself drift away as mom continued to massage my aching muscles. At least I had the day off tomorrow. Hopefully. Please.
Mako's POV
For a couple of months now I had noticed that Korra was spending an enormous amount of time in the city with Lilly and Jason, staying out until nine or ten at night. At first I didn't think much of it, but when I saw my daughter's arm covered in bruises I had to know what the hell was going on. Then there was my wife's sleepless nights that were worrying me as well. After she told me what happened with Slade she had been on edge and it worried me. It had been so long since I had seen her this way.
So one day I decided to follow them and see what they were up to. My eyes had narrowed when I saw both my kids enter the Waterbender's old training grounds and I prayed to the Spirits I was wrong about this. When I walked in, however, my suspicions were proven when I saw my wife sparring with Jason and Lilly. I slammed shut the door behind me and she looked up, taking a deep breath as I step down to the arena.
"What the hell is this?" I asked my voice nearly a growl.
"Jason, Lilly, go with Gran Gran and Grandad," she said to them before looking at me. "Mako, I can explain."
"Explain, what? What is the meaning of this? What are you doing here."
"I'm training them."
"For what."
A pause. "Lilly...she thinks the city needs the Blue Spirit," Korra replied.
"Excuse me?" Was she serious?
"And I think that it might."
I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling the steam come off my body. "Let me get this straight, you're going to listen to a sixteen year old about bringing a vigilante back?" I asked. "Are you serious?"
"Do you think I wanted them to do this? That I'm the one pushing them to do this?" my wife answered, her voice raising. "Lilly was going to do this with or without my blessing and Jason would go with her just to make sure she was as safe as possible! The least I can do is train them so the chance if them dying is less likely!"
"And what are you going to do if one of them is caught?" I questioned. "Have you thought of what could happen to them if they get sent to jail?"
"They won't get caught."
"How do you know?"
"Because if they do, I've decided I'll take the fall."
I shook my head. "This isn't right, Korra."
"Do you know who our daughter is?" she said in response. "Ever since Slade came she's had this notion in her head. I should have told you. But I'm not going to let her or Jason get killed. I can guarantee that by training them."
"Korra, you may have survived in a prison for five years, but they aren't you. They didn't go through what you did." I stepped closer to her. "You can't guarantee their safety, and you know that."
The Waterbender wouldn't even meet my gaze, jaw set, body tense...I's seen her this way before. She knew that I was right.
"I need to find Slade," she answered after a moment. "I need to protect my kids."
"Our kids, Korra," I corrected. "They're mine too." She took in a deep breath. "You're going back to your old self. You are barely eating, hardly sleeping. This isn't good for you."
"So what am I supposed to do?" Korra asked. "You don't want me training them, you don't want me to go after him. What am I supposed to do."
I sighed and wrapped my arms around her, resting my chin over her head. This was too complicated. I didn't even know what to do or what to say. I didn't think I'd find myself like this.
"We wait," I answered after a moment.
Jason's POV
I stretched my arms over my head, twisting my waist until I heard a satisfying pop. Sparring had been a little more brutal than usual today. As the months passed mom had been getting harder and harder on us on practice. Dad still wasn't too happy about it but even he couldn't deny that with this Slade guy in town, the city had been hit with disappearances, killings, thefts, all sorts of crime. It needed the Blue Spirit and that's why we went through the hell of training mom put us through.
"Hey Mom, how come you didn't have another kid after me?" Lilly asked as she grabbed an apple. "I would have liked to have a little brother or sister."
I let out a snort, shaking my head. "You were a handful enough, and you wanted mom to have another you? Not in a million years."
My sister pouted and Mom chuckled before answering. "I already had a boy and a girl, it's all I ever wanted."
"But I bet another kid would have made you happier."
I sighed. And she just had to keep pushing the subject. This was exactly why Mom stopped after her. "When I was younger I never thought I'd have even a glimmer of happiness. But then Jason came. And then your father. And then we had you and now I can't ever imagine being depressed or sad again."
Lilly smiled at her and she did something I hadn't seen her do in years. She went over to Mom, hugging her tightly. I could see the look of surprise on Korra's face but she returned the embrace nonetheless, kissing the top of my sister's head. I actually managed a smile at this. Who would have thought an old vigilante mask would bring them together?
Lilly's POV
It was Friday night. But I wasn't exactly the usual level of excited. No, I was excited because I would be gearing up and running patrol in the city. Mom had finally let us off our leash though I suspected she either followed us or asked someone to. Or maybe Dad did. He still wasn't all that thrilled about my new hobby.
"What are you looking at?" I asked as I walked into the living room.
"Nothing," my brother told me quickly putting the picture away.
I smirked before grabbing onto his neck bringing him down to wrestle on the floor. Jason fought back with me, careful not to hurt me as always but wanting to get away from me. That was not happening. I twisted us around until I was straddling his back and pulled out the picture before letting him go. He glared at me as he stood up, and I couldn't help but smile at the photo he always looked at before we would go on our vigilante duty at night.
"This is what you carry around?" I asked softly.
Bubba sighed and nodded his head. It was a picture of all of us the day I was born. Dad was giving mom a kiss as she looked at my brother and I. He was sitting in her lap, his attention completely on me as he held me and I looked up at them all. I somehow think I was just focused on him, my big brother.
Jason bumped me playfully and I laughed, giving him the photograph back before letting our parents know we were leaving. I could still see the nervousness in mom but she allowed us to leave, and I used my Waterbending to get us to shore. It was a little past one when my brother and I surprisingly ran into another masked crusader. Except that instead of dao blades, he had a bow.
My brother made a move to help but I placed a hand on his shoulder, shaking my head. I wanted to see what the red hooded pretty boy could do. Not long after he had knocked everyone to the ground, the thugs groaning as they tried to crawl away.
"I was wondering when we were going to meet," the stranger said as he climbed up to where we were.
"And you are?"
"Roy Harper. I believe you're familiar with my adoptive father, Oliver Queen."
My eyes widened behind the mask. "You're Uncle Ollie's kid?"
He smirked. "And if I'm not mistaken, you are Avatar Korra's daughter."
"Lilly."
"Beautiful name for a beautiful girl."
"Pulling out the big guns, aren't you?"
"Jason," my brother interrupted. "Just in case you hadn't noticed me standing here."
"Don't you have a girlfriend to go visit?" I asked.
Bubba cleared his throat and I laughed, reassuring him that Roy and I would be fine and we should meet up at our usual spot. My new red hooded companion smirked at this and I did the same. Somehow I knew that I would be seeing a lot more of him now.
Slade's POV
I watched as the Avatar's children and the red hooded archer hung upside down. For weeks I had been keeping tabs on them, waiting for the opportunity to make my move. Now that I had, I sent the kid a message, telling her who I had and what I demanded. Tonight I would have my revenge. Tonight I will avenge Shado's death.
I heard the creaking of floorboards and smiled. She was here. I snapped my fingers, ordering my men to be on high alert when she landed in front of me, dao blades out. I chuckled in response asking her to look over at her children, which were now on their knees, guns to their heads. She dropped the blades and I smiled before knocking her down on the floor.
"It good to see you again, Avatar Korra."
"What do you want, Slade," she asked through clenched teeth.
"Shado," I answered. "Do you remember her? The one you killed."
"She was out of control."
"You chose Howl, your protector," I continued as I walked over to her children before pulling out a gun. "Now you're going to choose, just like you did with Shado."
She shook her head, making a move to stand, raisin her hands. "That's not what happened."
"That is what happened!" I shouted. "You chose Howl! You chose him over Shado!"
"She was trying to kill me!"
"Mom, whats happening?" the girl asked with a whimper.
I chuckled and shook my head, going behind them as I raised my gun once more. "You made the wrong choice twenty years ago."
"Then let me make the right one today," she answered her voice wavering. "Kill me. Leave them be."
"No!" the boy answered. "Mom, don't!"
"Don't do this. Please. Mom..."
"So tell me Avatar...is blood thicker than water?" I asked as my finger touched the trigger. "Choose."
She shook her head.
"Choose."
Still no response.
"Choose!" I yelled.
Before she answered this loud screech filled the air and I dropped the gun, covering my ears only to be knocked back against the wall with air. I growled and stood, noticing the green archer with his companion. So she hadn't come alone.
"Get them!" I ordered, raising my blade as the Avatar approached me.
I ran towards her, blade raised only for her to easily dodge, landing a kick on my back. I quickly turned swinging the weapon around, hoping to slow her down but she expertly dodged and I knew I was out of my game. But the reminder of Shado's death fueled my anger, my rage, my hatred towards her and although my plan had not been carried out like I planned. I could settle for her head.
She ducked when I swung once more, coming up grab my hand and elbowing my arm, causing me to release the blade before punching my face and knocking me down. I tried to get up but she stepped on my chest, blade on my throat.
I chuckled in response, licking the blood off my lip. "Are you going to kill me, kid?" I asked. "Do it." No answer. "Come on, I kidnapped your children. Would have killed them both, kill me." Still nothing. "Kill me!"
The blade dug into my throat, drawing some blood before she tossed it aside. "Get out of my city," Korra replied, jaw clenched and body tense. "But if you ever lay a hand on my children again and I will reunite you with Shado."
I growled in response, watching as she left, my men on the floor, groaning. I wasn't done with her yet. I wasn't done. "I will have my revenge, Avatar!" I yelled as she left. "In this lifetime or the next!"
Korra's POV
Two years.
It had been two years since Slade had left the city. Spirits know that I would have wanted to rip his miserable head off for touching my children, but I was also because of them that I had let him live. I needed to show them what separated us from people like him. There was also the fact that I had swore to never let either of them see me take a life. I had already broken that promise with Jason a long time ago. I wouldn't break it with Lilly.
"Was Roy with you again?" I asked, my attention still on the book of my lap as my children walked in.
It had become routine for Oliver's adoptive son to gear up whenever he visited with the multimillionaire. Not that I could blame him. Ollie sure had his way with women though Laurel had been a stable partner for a couple of years now. Asami was even surprised to see him with just her around town.
"Uh, no. Haven't seen him."
I raised a brow, looking up. "What have I told you about lying?"
She sighed. "It only works on Dad..."
I chuckled and nodded my head, checking both of them for any injuries and smiling when I found none. Just last month my daughter had sprained her wrist when she had taken a hard fall, something that my best friend was able to fix with the gadgets she'd made for them. Asami was well aware of what they were doing and she was okay with it for the most part. She always teased me that Lilly was going to be just like me. And unfortunately she was.
"Did you -"
"Yes."
"And are you sure - "
"Yes."
"And did you -"
"Mom," Jason cut me off once more. "We were careful. Neither of us got hurt." He smiled at me.
"Yeah," Lilly agreed. "We have each others backs. Besides," she grinned, and it was such a familiar expression. "We were taught by the best."
I managed a smile and asked them both to go to bed and reminded my daughter to close her window because if Mako caught Roy sneaking in again, he might really kill him this time. She rolled her eyes in response but assured me she would. Once the doors closed I made my way back to my husband when there was a knock on the door. I paused, letting them knock a few times before going to answer it.
"Chief Beifong," I greeted. "Do you want me to get Mako?"
"No, I actually came to speak to you."
"What can I do for you, Chief?"
"There's a vigilante that's been running around my city. All witnesses claim they saw the Blue Spirit..." She studied me, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly with her scrutiny. The old cop was getting up there in age, and I found myself feeling sorry that she had to chase after my kids now. Of course, she was the one who refused to retire. "You wouldn't happen to be practicing old habits, would you?"
"I can honestly say that I am not parading around in that mask anymore." She raised a brow and crossed her arms, seemingly skeptical. Couldn't blame the old girl.
"I hope for your sake that you're telling the truth. I'd honestly hate to have to ruin this life you've made for yourself."
And despite everything, I knew she was at least sincere in that regard. I closed the door and went to bed, giving Mako a kiss when he stirred, asking him to go to sleep as I laid down next to him.
Mako's POV
I watched my wife as she stood in the highest point in the island, her gaze focused beyond the bay. Jason and Lilly had both gone to town, but only my daughter was there on Blue Spirit business. The Firebender had begun to date a shy Nonbender from work and they were going out on another date. I had never seen him so infatuated over some one but Korra and I were both happy for him. He wasn't a little boy anymore and we had known that this day would come.
However, I wasn't still particularly happy about Oliver Queen's son dating my daughter. She had just turned eighteen and started the police academy. She did not need him as a distraction but at my wife's insistence I allowed their relationship, knowing that at the very least he would be able to protect my little girl. Still, the last time I saw them making out... Let's just say he's lucky Korra was there to drag me away.
"Keeping a watch out for them?" I commented as I joined her.
"They'll stop one day," Korra said looking out to the city, like she did when she'd first came back from the island.
I sighed and wrapped my arms around her waist, placing my chin on her shoulder. "How can you be so sure?"
"Because we all do," she replied.
"How do you know when it's time?" I asked.
I saw her smile. "Because you find something you haven't had before, a force that will make you stop," Korra continued before looking at me, something in her eyes.
"What is that?"
"Love."
