Author's Note: Welcome to the first chapter of the new and improved Second Chance at Adventure! If you haven't read the first story, then I would recommend doing that first and then coming back so that you can understand the different character relationships and whatnot. There is also A Golden Adventure that deals with their time during the Golden Age but that isn't as important to read first. I hope you enjoy!
Chapter One: The Fight
"Why are you reading that rubbish?" Georgie asked, looking at the newspaper in his mate's hand.
Edmund looked up from his reading and gave the taller boy next to him an annoyed look before turning back to his paper.
"You better watch it or you'll end up just like your sister." Georgie continued to tease, nodding towards Susan who stood not too far away in front of the newsstand, a copy of that days post in her hands. Although she could easily hear their conversations, she pretended she couldn't and kept her eyes on the text in front of her.
The black haired boy looked up again and shot his friend an annoyed look that caused the other boy to chuckle. "That's not funny," he muttered before nodding towards the paper in Georgie's hand. "What about you, now that is rubbish."
Georgie looked down at the funnies he had been reading before he started teasing Edmund. "This happens to be fine literature," he said in a mock serious tone, hitting the corner of the magazine with the back of his hand.
Edmund shot the brunette a 'whatever-you-say' expression before looking over at his sister. A nerdy looking boy in glasses had walked over and was trying to engage her in conversation. Nudging Georgie, he nodded his head in his sisters' direction, an evil look on his face; a look that Georgie returned as they both turned to watch Susan crush the boy's hopes.
"I've seen you…" the boy was saying as Susan tried to concentrate on her newspaper, "Sitting by yourself. Sometimes another girl joins you. But mostly you are by yourself."
Susan tried to keep the annoyance from her face as she slowly lowered the paper in her hands. "Yes, well…I prefer to be left alone most of the time," she said as she turned away from him, hoping that he would get the hint that she didn't want to talk to him.
He didn't.
"Me, too." A smile formed on his face. "What's your name?"
Susan let out a slow sigh before turning to face the boy. "Phyllis," she replied, her face tight.
"Susan!"
Edmund and Georgie watched as Lucy came out of nowhere, breathing heavy.
"You'd better come quickly," she stated before turning to the two boys. "You two as well."
Because of the urgency in Lucy's tone, the three returned their reading material to the stand before picking up their things and running after the young girl. They crossed the street quickly before heading down into the underground. As soon as they entered, they could hear the faint sounds of people chanting and saw the large group of kids that formed a wall, blocking the stairs that led to the platform. As they got closer, they were able to hear what it was that they were chanting. "Fight! Fight! Come on!" Pushing their way through the crowd, they saw there was indeed a fight going on, and Peter was in the middle of it.
He fought alone against three other boys. Two held him down while the third punched him. The two holding him then threw him against the wall while he struggled to remove himself from their grasp. Susan looked down at her older brother, a disapproving look on her face as they made eye contact. Looking around the group, she saw Lily standing on the inner edge of the circle, a conflicted look on her pale face. As his protector, Lily wanted nothing more than to join the fight and help Peter. These were just a couple of boys. She had been trained to handle skilled warriors or worse.
It shouldn't have gotten to this point in the first place, though; she should have just pulled Peter away.
They had just been walking down the platform, minding their own business while they waited for their train to arrive. Susan, Edmund, and Georgie had excused themselves to the newspaper stand, having grown bored of waiting about on the benches that lined the underground. Lucy had remained with Peter and Lily, but had left their company momentarily to go to the bathroom. The pair was just moving to stand next to one of the pillars to wait for the young girl when a group of boys walked passed, one bumping into Lily's shoulder as he passed.
"Oi, watch where you're going!" he barked, turning around to glare at her.
"Hey, you walked into her," Peter said, stepping forward slightly so that he stood between the boy and his girlfriend.
"Aren't you going to apologize?" the boy asked, completely ignoring the fact that Peter had just spoken to him.
Lily took a moment to look up at Peter, placing a hand on his upper arm before turning to the other boy. "I'm sor-"
She didn't have a chance to finish as Peter began speaking again. "She didn't do anything," his voice was strained as he tried to keep his cool for Lily's sake. But he wasn't going to let this boy talk to his girlfriend like that, though. "You should be the one apologizing."
For the first time, the other boy turned to Peter and acknowledged the fact that he had spoken. His brows furrowed deeper as his glare intensified. "I don't think I was talking to you, Mate." At the end of his sentence, the boy pushed Peter's shoulder as though to extra emphasize his point.
"Noah, it's not worth it, let's just go," one of the boy's friends said from behind him, obviously bored with the situation.
"He's right, let's go, Noah," the third said before turning his attention to Lily. "Maybe she'll want to come with us."
The first boy, Noah, who seemed to be the leader, nodded his head at the idea as a faint smirk appeared on his face. "What do you say, love? Why don't you ditch this loser and come with us."
Lily just started shaking her head while pulling gently on Peter's arm. "No, thank you. Come on, Pete."
She almost thought they were going to get away without incident. But had only been able to take two steps when the lead boy opened his mouth one last time.
"Aww, come on, baby doll. Ditch that little boy and give some real men a chance." As soon as the words were out of his mouth, he and his friends shared in a laugh before turning away.
What happened next seemed to pass in a blur. One second Peter was standing at her side and the next he was plowing his fist into Noah's face. The other two boys seemed surprised for a moment before they both made a grab at Peter. He avoided one of the boys but was grabbed by the other. That didn't stop him from punching that boy in the stomach, though. Noah managed to recover from his punch to the face and was able to land a blow to Peter's face as well. That was when the crowd started to form, egging the four on as a way to pass the time. Lily was just fighting her way towards the middle of the group when Lucy came running up to her.
"Lily! What happened?" the young girl asked as she was pushed around by the other children trying to get a view of the fight. "Is that Peter?"
"Lucy, you have to get the others," Lily said, not even bothering to explain everything to the girl. There just wasn't any time. "Go and get the boys! Go!"
After giving Lucy a small push, Lily put her focus back into getting towards the center of the now formed circle. She knew that Peter wouldn't be happy if she jumped in to help him, but she just had to make sure that things didn't get to out of hand before Edmund and Georgie managed to get there to help.
It took the pair a while as Edmund and Georgie had momentarily been separated from Lucy and Susan due to the large crowd of students observing the fight. But soon they were able to push their way through the pack of students and threw themselves into the fight while Lucy yelled their names. Edmund tackled one of the boys to the ground while Georgie punched another in the face when he turned to see what had happened to his mate. Only being held down by one person now, Peter was able to free himself from the wall and take a swing at his attacker only for two more guys to join in the fight.
Peter was brought down to the ground and kicked hard in the stomach while Georgie took a hard kick to the back of the knee, causing him to go down as well. Edmund tackled another guy to the ground and hit him in the face before he was grabbed from behind by one of the other boys. Georgie and Peter tried to throw a couple more punches, but were outnumbered two-to-one. In the distance, an officer was blowing his whistle and making his way swiftly towards the fight, a few other officers following behind.
"Break it up!" the man yelled, "That's enough. Come on!"
Quickly, the crowd of students dispersed as the officers pulled the fighting boys off of each other.
"Act your age!" One of them told Peter before pushing him away from the boys who he had been fighting.
Lily shot the man a dirty look before moving to stand by Peter's side, grabbing his hand in hers. It hadn't been his fault that the fight had started…or maybe it had seeing as he threw the first punch. But the other boys had instigated it! Edmund and Georgie collected their fallen hats and Edmund's scarf before following Lily and Peter as they led the way towards their stuff. Lucy and Susan, who had just managed to fight through the crowd of students, followed as well.
When they made it to the bench, Lily and Peter each took a seat while the others sat their own things on the ground. Lucy sat on the other side of her oldest brother and rested a hand on his shoulder, Susan sitting on her other side.
"You're welcome," Edmund said as he leaned on one shoulder against the wall next to his sister.
"I had it sorted," Peter said defensively as he pushed himself off of the bench and moved to stand in front of them.
"Yeah, it sure looked like it," Georgie muttered to himself, his arms crossed over his chest. He stood on the other side of the bench next to Lily.
Susan looking up slightly and shot him a quick glare before turning it to her older brother who stood in front of her. "What was it this time?" she asked.
"He bumped Lily."
"So you hit him?" Lucy asked in disbelief, turning to look at Lily. The young girl couldn't believe that her closest friend had let her brother start a fight just because she had been bumped.
Having noticed her young friends look, Lily opened her mouth to explain only to be interrupted by Peter who turned to face them. "No. After he bumped into her, he tried to make her apologize. Then he and his friends tried to get Lily to leave with them because they were 'manlier'. That's when I hit him."
Lily shook her head lightly. "I told you to just leave it, Peter," she said softly. "But I can't say that the gesture wasn't appreciated." It was true. The outcome was terrible, but she couldn't deny the small part of her that deep down liked the idea of Peter willing to start fights for her.
The comment caused the corner of Peter's lips to twitch up. "I would face an army for you, Lily." His smile only grew as he saw a blush appear on the brunette girls cheeks. It was short lived, however, as his sister spoke.
"Is it really that hard just to walk away?" Susan asked with a scoff. She understood that what the other boys did wasn't right, but that didn't mean Peter had to engage in their poor behavior.
"I shouldn't have to!" Peter complained, his face falling "I mean, don't you ever get tired of being treated like a kid?"
"Um, we are kids," Edmund pointed out, earning himself a glare from Peter.
"Well, I wasn't always." Peter let out a sigh before walking back towards his siblings and friends and retook his seat. "It's been a year. How long does he expect us to wait?"
They all knew what he was talking about. Lily stretched out her hand to grasp his once again and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Peter looked down at her as she offered a small smile. She was about to say something when Susan started speaking.
"I think it's time to accept the fact that we live here now. It's no use pretending any different."
Everyone shifted uncomfortably at these words.
"Is it really so bad to want to return? I mean; that place has been my home just about as long as England has," Lily pointed out after a short pause. Narnia had been their home for fifteen years. Were they really just supposed to forget about it because a year had gone by without them returning? It seemed a little impatient.
As a response, Susan rolled her eyes before looking away.
"Oh, no," she said before turning to face them all again. She had spotted the nerdy boy from before. "Pretend you're talking to me."
"We are talking to you," Edmund pointed out.
"Afraid of your new boyfriend, Susan?" Georgie teased with a smirk, spotting the boy who had bothered her at the newsstand. "Or are we just not good enough to meet him?"
"And here I thought we were family."
Susan shot the two an un-amused look and was about too retort when Lucy jumped from the bench and let out a cry of pain.
"Quiet, Lu," Susan hushed, not wanting to draw attention to herself for fear that the boy would actually notice her and come over. She didn't even want to imagine the type of torture Edmund and Georgie would put her through if that happened.
"Something pinched me!" Lucy said defensively, pointing towards the bench.
"Stop pulling!" Peter cried next, jumping as well before turning towards Edmund.
"I'm not touching you," Edmund insisted from his place by the wall, confused by his brother's outburst. He wasn't even close to him!
"Whoa, what the-" Georgie started, before pulling away from the wall as a strange sensation ran up his arm.
Lily and Susan both stood as well, confused looks on both of their faces as they watched their sibling act so strangely. A train started to roll into the station causing the wind to play with their hair.
"Look, would you all just-" Susan started to scold before she felt a small pinch as well. "What is that?"
Lucy looked at the others, a large smile on her face. "It feels like magic."
