"I'm joking, you never worked for me." Kendall spoke softly; a small grin was placed on his face showing his dimples.
Sarah felt her breath get caught in her throat and her heart began to flutter as she eyed the blonde skeptically.
" We uh…we actually met at a party. It was a Saturday night, one of those days when every single person wants to party. I didn't feel too good, and I didn't want to go anywhere. So I stayed back home while all my friends went out. And then James came home, and pestered me to go out with him, because Ashten was in Florida visiting Grandparents." He said, remembering the night perfectly as if it had just happen seconds earlier.
Kendall continued, Sarah, listening carefully.
"Not wanting to make him feel worse, I reluctantly agreed. We got to a club, and seeing that it was full, we sat on a bar stool. A waitress asked us what we wanted. Or was it you? I know your hair was long then but I don't remember how you looked. You introduced yourself and passed us the cocktail menu. And walked away, but you came back and we ordered our drinks. I wanted a daiquiri and James ordered something else. The entire night you walked across me a few times, even though we were sitting in the far corner of the counter. You really didn't have to walk by us. An hour later, you dropped the check, and we opened our wallets to pay." Kendall said.
For some reason, Sarah could sort of remember that night, but not fully. She kept her mouth closed and didn't say anything about it."
"James had this crazy idea of me writing my phone number on a napkin. It sounded stupid at first, but suddenly I really wanted to leave you my phone number. James didn't have a pen, and neither did I. But I was determined. I literally went around the bar and asked anyone if they had anything I could write with."
"Did you find a pen?" Sarah asked him.
"Kendall laughed out loud. "Not exactly, some girl gave me glittery lipstick."
Sarah started to laugh, it wasn't a fake laugh. It was real. And the sound of her laughing was music to Kendall's ears he couldn't help but chuckle himself at how stupid he was only three years ago.
"After that, I dropped James home and drove back to my place, wondering what you thought when you saw my note. "Gorgeous!" That's what I called you! You must have had a nice laugh about my choice of words."
"I think it's sweet." Sarah said in a hushed manner, eyes glittering.
Kendall rolled his eyes at her reply before continuing.. "Long story short, you ended up calling me the Following Tuesday, We talked for an hour that first calls. I was lying in my room with my legs dangling above my head while we talked. You told me on the phone that your sister was pestering you now and then, asking who it was on the phone. At one point in the conversation I heard you sister scream into the phone that you were blushing while speaking to me. It turned out that it was your last night working at that bar, the same night when I wrote you that note." He says.
"Surprisingly, that sounds like something a sister would say."
"I told you I was listening to music and talking to you at the same time. You than asked me which song. And I told you it was an old Boys like Girls classic, you actually knew that song! None of my friends ever knew the song! You also told me that you loved Boys like Girls. The song was stuck in my head for a week after we spoke that night. It still reminds me of that night, each time I play that song. You talked about your family and your dog and what you wanted to do with your life. I was really impressed. You seemed to have everything together. You knew what you wanted to do and you were doing it. I was a little intimidated by your perfect life. When you said you had to hang up because you were meeting someone from the family, I figured I had nothing to lose so I said you wanted to return the favor, is the phone call the favor or does that mean I'm going to see you again. You paused like I had caught you off guard and I wondered if I had made a mistake. But then you asked me about my upcoming schedule for that weekend. We made plans for Friday night and you said you'd call me later in the week. It was crazy, unbelievable, and ridiculous. And completely unexpected to tell you the truth."
Sarah kept her gaze on him, totally compelled and interested in what the blonde boy had to say, she liked how he had remembered all these memories like it had only happen hours ago, it was something that she never thought a man could do, But again, Sarah realized that Kendall wasn't like all the other guys in the world, Kendall was special. And that obviously even though she doesn't remember him was most likely one of the many reasons she ended up marrying him. Oh how she wished she could remember the memories Kendall was telling her, even if it was for a split second.
"Tell me about the weekend, where we officially went out or met up." She says getting comfortable, hand resting under her chin, soft brown eyes gazing at jade green. She felt as if she could look into those eyes forever.
Kendall seemed
"Well, I wasn't exactly straight up honest with you," Kendall shyly admitted, his eyes now focused on his hands and not her.
"What do you mean? You lied about something? Sarah asked.
"Sort of," He seemed a little bit reluctant to tell her what had happened exactly that first weekend they went out together and that got Sarah a little worried at first.
Different scenarios began to jump around in her head about what exactly happened. Had he been already dating when they first met? Perhaps married? What if the two of them had an affair?
That was the one that stuck like gum to a shoe in her little mind of hers, but it also made her cringe with uttermost disgust. She couldn't fathom herself getting involved with a married man, she just couldn't.
But what if she hadn't known he was married. Was that what he means? He lied about his marital status?
"You're letting your imagination run away with that pretty little mind of yours again aren't you?" He told her, giving her hand a small squeeze as if he was silently signaling her that everything he was about to say wasn't
as bad as she thought it out to actually be.
Kendall looked at her as though he knew exactly what she was thinking. He'd been doing that a lot lately. It was a bit disconcerting.
"What do you mean?"
He half smiled, "You always do that when you're worried about something."
Sarah didn't say anything; instead she just shook her head in a knowing manner.
"What really happen was that, well, I didn't know you were allergic to Soy, and we ended up meeting at a coffee shop close to where we had first met. I got there first so I thought I'd get us two orders of coffee, turns out when you took a sip it had soy in it."
"I imagine I was very angry."
"Royally pissed would have been a more apt description of it. You refused to speak to me for a whole month afterwards, despite my frequent calls, emails, texts. You wouldn't have anything to do with me." He looked at her intently, "I think that was when I actually first realized I was madly in love with you."
Of course, fate had to intervene right then and there. By the time Sarah was finally ready to forgive him over something as ridiculous as that, she was already seeing someone else. It had broken his heart being so connected to her those short few hours spent together, hearing her talk about her boyfriend and being unable to tell her his own feelings for her. In the end, he decided that having her in his life as a friend was better than not having her in his life at all.
So, he kept his feelings to himself for a whole year. Kendall still thinks it was worth it, though, because after that year was over, everything suddenly was right in the world. Sarah broke up with her boyfriend, who had been a complete jerk, in Kendall's opinion, and guess whose shoulders she cried on?
Kendall had never been one to take advantage of a girl in a situation like that, but he was only human after all and he'd been in love with her for over a year. Enough was enough.
One day, a week after the disastrous break-up, Kendall took Sarah out to cheer her up. Amidst one of her usual tirades about how she hated dating and men and she wasn't going to open her heart to anyone ever again, Kendall blurted out, "I loved you." Before he knew what he was doing, she was in his arms and he was kissing her senseless. The total surprise, however, was that instead of Sarah pulling back and slapping him, like Kendall expected her to, she kissed him back.
Kendall had been ecstatic. Finally after a long wait he could actually tell people that Sarah was his girlfriend. For weeks after that he hadn't been able to wipe the goofy smile off his face. His friends teased him like crazy, but he didn't even take notice or care for that matter. He was happy. So happy, in fact, that nearly two years after they started to date, he popped the question and She said 'yes'.
Sarah and Edward had been talking for hours of the past, more like Kendall talking and Sarah just listening. Suddenly Sarah felt incredibly tired, as though her body had just registered how late in the night it actually was. She yawned.
"Oh, you should go to sleep and get some much needed rest, You need to get as much sleep as possible." He informed her.
"Yeah, I know. I'm not that tired though."
"Good, it means your body is healing well."
If she didn't know any better, she'd swear the man in front of her thought he was a doctor. Sarah guessed he was just worried though, so she wasn't overly annoyed at his tone of voice. He sounded like he was talking to a toddler.
They quietly made their way upstairs and Sarah suddenly remember they're supposed to be sleeping in the same room. In the same bed. She hardly knew the guy. She can't sleep with him. Even if all they'll do is sleep. Yes, sure, he was her husband, but she didn't remember him and that made him a complete stranger to her.
They reached the bedroom and Kendall opened the door to usher her in when she hesitated. Again, he seemed to read her mind.
"Don't worry," He reassured her with a soft smile. "I'll sleep on the couch."
Sarah had totally forgotten about the couch on the other side of the room from the bed. She heaved a sigh of relief.
Kendall heard her sigh and smiled sadly. He missed his wife. The Sarah he saw in front of him now seemed to only a shell of the girl he once knew, the Sarah who'd been there only two days ago. He needed Sarah back again. He promised himself right then that he'd do anything and everything in his power to help Sarah get her memory back and fast. Before he lost his mind or went crazy with longing.
"Goodnight." Kendall called out to her.
"Goodnight." She said back. She shut her eyes and started to relax as the exhaustion of the whole day caught up with her. Right before she drifted off to sleep, however, she could've sworn she hear a voice say, "I love you, Sarah, Come back to me."
