Dean – 9

Sam – 5

Kate – 1.5

Ever since the fire ripped apart their home, the Winchesters had been staying in run down motels across the Midwest while their dad searched for information—he was desperate for information. After about two months of traveling, John had finally settled in a small town in Nebraska, so his two boys could be enrolled in school again. He spent most of his days researching everything he could get his hands on, and on the weekends, he'd take his search to other towns, leaving the kids home alone for an entire day at a time, leaving Dean responsible for the other two.

This Sunday was like the one before it—the three siblings were locked in a motel room, fending for themselves. They had strict instructions to not go outside—to not even open the door unless John gave them the password. With very few TV channels and coloring books, it meant they had to let their imagination take over, which wasn't hard to do for them at this age.

And today, Dean had a very important job to do. It was an urgent matter of upmost importance. And he was the only one capable of carrying out the task. He had to save his sister….

…from the lava.

Dean stood on the bed and inched to the corner, calling out to his little sister about six feet in front of him. "Hang on, Katie. We'll save you! Just don't move!" he pleaded.

Katie squealed in excitement from where she was sitting on the floor near the couch. She loved watching her brothers play, especially when they seemed to involve her in the adventure.

"First Mate, we gotta hurry before her boat is eaten by lava," Captain Dean declared with urgency.

Sam looked around, thinking hard about how they were going to accomplish their mission this time. It was dangerous, but he knew he didn't have a choice. "I got it!" he declared, jumping a few times on the bed. He reached down and pulled up on the sheet. "We'll use this rope and I'll hold onto it while you go out there." He pointed toward the toddler.

Dean tapped his chin, mulling over the idea. "Brilliant!" he declared as they both scrambled to pull the sheet out from under the comforter. Dean handed one corner to his brother and then grabbed onto the opposite one. He placed on hand on Sam's shoulder and his voice got lower. "Don't let go, Sammy. This is life or death, got it?" he said with fake authority.

"Aye, aye, Captain!" Sam reassured his loyalty. He wouldn't let his brother down, not when he needed him most.

Dean inched toward the end of the bed with Sam, both standing at the edge and looking down at the lava, which happened to be an ugly faded green pattern. Dean sat down and started to lower himself to the ground, but as soon as his feet touched the carpet, he immediately hissed in agony and jumped back onto the bed.

Seeing her brother in pain immediately made Katie uneasy. "De?" she called out with wide eyes.

Dean held up his hand for her to not worry. "I'm okay, Katie. Stay calm," he reassured. Sometimes she didn't understand that he was playing, which was super annoying, but the show had to go on. He turned to Sam in shock. "It's too hot, First Mate. I'll never make it through the lava alive," he explained.

Knowing it was his duty to fix this, Sam dropped the sheet and ran to the other side of the bed, grabbing a pillow in each hand. "These rocks! They can help you walk on top of it."

"You're a genius!" Dean praised as he ruffled Sam's hair. "Let's go!" He quickly grabbed one pillow and threw it about two feet from the side of the bed. Tucking the other pillow under his arm, he grabbed hold of the sheet again and motioned for Sam to do the same. He dramatically turned to his little brother with a solemn face. "If I don't make it back, bury me at sea with all the treasure." He was a pirate at heart.

Sam's face immediately scrunched up, not liking what he'd just heard. "But that's not fair. I should get some treasure, too."

The kid had a point. "Okay, fine. You can have a handful."

"But I want more."

"Sorry, that's all you can get. I'm the captain."

"But I'm second in charge," he negotiated. Cue the puppy dog eyes.

Damn. The kid really knew how to bargain hard and he immediately caved with that look. "Fine. You can have half of the treasure, but no more."

Pleased with the new deal, Sam gave him an officer's salute and wished him the best. The eldest Winchester turned to look at the journey ahead. "I'm coming, Katie!" he called out louder than necessary.

At hearing that, Katie clapped her hands in joy. She reached for the end table and started to pull herself up, her legs wobbling as she did. She had only started walking a few months ago and was still perfecting her stance.

"Katie! No!" Dean called out. He didn't want his sister to start walking on the lava and then fall, because he didn't know if their medical skills would be able to fix her up. It was too risky.

When she heard Dean seemingly scold her—not realizing they were playing—, she turned toward him so fast that her hand lost grip on the table and she fell back on her bottom. The entire series of events scared her, so she did the only thing she knew to do when she felt that emotion. Her eyes filled with tears.

Dean was on the clock—his sister was now like a ticking time bomb and he had to get there to defuse it before it went off and the full waterworks and shrieking started. It was the actual worst when that happened. With precise movements, he jumped from the bed and onto the first pillow, shrinking the distance between him and his sister. Still gripping onto the sheet, he threw the next pillow as close as he could to Katie, about a foot from her. He jumped like a kangaroo and there he was—within reaching distance.

Katie's eyes began to overflow with tears as she started to cry out. Dean immediately squatted down to her eye level and reached out his hand. "Hey, it's okay. I'm here now," he soothed like the hero big brother he was.

The youngest sibling sniffled as she stared at her brother's outstretched hand. She looked at him with a pouty bottom lip as she contemplated whether or not she was in trouble and if she wanted to keep crying.

"I'm here to save you," he explained as he waved for her to come closer.

She looked from Dean and then over to Sam who was also waving her to come. "Hurry up, Katie! We gotta move super extra fast!" Sam looked around the room as if scoping out any upcoming dangers to their area.

Understanding that she wasn't in trouble, she wiped the tears from her eyes with her tiny fist before returning her gaze to the eldest brother. "De," she said calmly.

"It's Captain De to you," he corrected, still in character. But when her head tiled to the side in confusion, he quickly added, "Never mind, let's go!" There was no time to explain the rules of the game. The stakes were too high.

Now it was her turn to play! She rested her hands on the ground, pushing her butt up into the air, before she pulled herself up into a standing position. "De, look!" she exclaimed with joy.

"Yeah, I see you standing up, now come here," he called out again, this time with more insistence. Katie took a few steps toward her brother before she was finally able to grab onto his hand. "I got her!" Dean shouted back at Sam over the imaginary lava sounds. He tugged on the rope. "Hang on tight! You gotta pull us in!" he reminded his brother.

Sam gripped the rope with both hands, knowing it was going to be hard to bring them both in together. He had to use all his muscles—it was a good thing he was strong. At least that was what Dean told him. "I got you!" Sam confirmed.

Dean leaned over and scooped up Katie, letting out a grunt at her size. "Dude, you need to lay off the veggies. It's making you grow too fast." Her only reply was to blow a raspberry in his face playfully, not even caring about what he had just said. Dean closed his eyes when the onslaught of spit happened. "Point taken," he replied sharply.

"Hurry, Dean! The volcano is going to explode!" Sam shouted with the upmost urgency.

Dean adjusted his sister onto his hip and gripped the sheet with his free hand. "Pull, Samuel! Pull!" he yelled back.

Sam let out a mountain of grunts as he pulled the immense weight back toward the bed. However, due to his super strength, they were both at the foot of the bed within seconds. He dropped the sheet and immediately ran to help. Lying down on his stomach, he reached down to pull them to safety.

"Take the civilian first!" Dean ordered, turning so Sam could easily grab ahold of her.

"Bubba!" Katie declared with excitement when Sam grabbed onto her arms and started pulling her onto the bed.

"It's Sam," he groaned, not liking the stupid nickname she'd somehow picked up. Once she was safely on the bed, he gently pushed her out of the way. "Move, we gotta save the Captain," he explained as if she should already know this.

Reaching down again, he helped pull his brother to safety as well. They both laid on their backs and panted like they'd just finished running a marathon in record time. "We did it, Sammy. That was a close one."

"Yeah, we did good," Sam shared as he closed his eyes.

At seeing both boys lay there, Katie scooted over next to Dean and snuggled into his side, wanting to be part of whatever new game they were playing on the bed. The insane amount of energy exerted by each person on that bed was incomprehensible. It wasn't easy to save your sister from overflowing lava on an already sinking ship. It wasn't a job for just anyone—only the Winchester brothers could manage something like that. But it had taken a lot out of them. Batman wasn't invincible, you know. He had to rest from time to time, Dean reminded himself. And within five minutes, all three siblings were fast asleep in an afternoon nap on the bed.

About thirty minutes later, John returned. However, before he could pound on the door to ask Dean to open it, he walked past the main room window, which had the curtains pulled back. He felt his heart skip a beat when he saw his three beloved children spread out on the bed, all sleeping. There was something about the sweet innocence of them being so close together, so young and small that they could all still easily fit on one bed. Without another thought, he went back to his car to wait. He wanted them to have this moment, to rest peacefully and without a care in the world. He'd try to preserve that for as long as he could—but he knew it wouldn't be much longer now, especially for his eldest. Not with everything John had been learning about the real world. But today—he'd let them all still be kids.
