CHAPTER ONE
We have been driving for a several hours now, taking all the back roads to get out of the city. Seeing as how most of the roads are jam packed with cars and it takes a long time with us having to go around all the walker filled streets.
All of a sudden Daryl comes flying passed me while honking his horn like crazy, driving passed us and up to the RV. "What's he doing? What's wrong?" I yell while looking in my mirrors but still trying to keep my eyes on the road. "I don't see Shane's jeep." Jack yells back, while he and Anna look through all the windows.
T-dog, Carol and I all pass the RV, which is slowing down. I flip around when the RV does, I honk to T-dog before driving back up to the RV. I can see Shane running and jumping into the RV before they take off again. "Oh good, he made it." I sigh in relief to the kids, who then settled down.
I catch up to the RV after weaving in and out of all the walkers with T-dog and Carol behind me and Daryl behind them. I follow behind the RV until it turns down an alleyway and pulls to a stop. I park close behind and wait until Glenn comes jogging up to my window.
"Why did we stop?" I ask him after I roll down my window. "This is the nursing home I told you about. We are going see if Guillermo will let us stay the night." Glenn tells us as the others pull up behind me. Getting out I quickly run around and open the trunk hatch, to let out Jack and Anna.
As T-dog parks behind me, I strap on my gun and knife before Jack and I put on our go-bags. We Pick up Gracie and Haylee and T-dog shuts the trunk for me, before we all make our way up to the others. "You keep your eyes closed for me Honey bear ok." I say softly and she just nods and buries her face into Jack's shoulder.
I shut the RV door as I pass by it unsure why they would leave it wide open like that. "It looks like they are barely hanging on. What makes you think they will take in strangers?" Andrea asks as we all gather up in front of the RV. "With all the guns we gave them, they'll probably throw us a party. Good call for once." Daryl said to Rick while loading up his crossbow.
We start to make our way through this run down building , through a broken window. T-dog and Dale help me and Jack down with Anna between us. "Where are the look outs?" Glenn asks while looking around confused and so am I. I thought they said that this place had a lot of people.
"Son of a bitch." Shane said when we came around a corner to see several walkers eating dead people. I stop and turn so that Anna won't see the walkers that are eating. "To hell with the noise." Rick said when the walkers start to notice us.
Jack and I cover the girl's ears while Anna covered her own. Carol, Lori and I huddle the kids close when the men start shooting all of the walkers down. "Come on!" Rick yella after they shot down all the walkers.
We get up and we follow after Rick, Daryl and Shane into a garage. Anna is holding onto my left side with Gracie, so that my right arm is free. I unclip my gun, but leave it in its holster, as we make our way through the garage and passed a courtyard and all the way up to a hallway with Jack in front of me, T-dog, Andrea and Glenn behind me, covering the back.
We pile in the hallway, just to see more dead people lying all around. Sophia starts to cry loudly, which makes Daryl to turn her angrily. "Put a sock in it." He whispers angrily which makes her cry more. "You leave her alone." Carol whispers back while pulling Sophia closer to her.
"Shut her up or I will." He harshly whispers back. "Back the hell off and I mean right now." Lori said while pointing to him. "Daryl! just stop." I whisper while shaking my head and he looks at me for a moment before glaring and looking away but I can see his shoulders dropping a little.
Sophia wasn't the only one that was terrified, Anna had started shaking so Jack pulls her to him and Haylee. "Are we staying or going?" Lori asks looking only at Rick. "We don't have enough fuel." He said looking to Shane who says we should stay for a night but Rick, himself and Daryl will sweep the building first, so that it would be safe for us the night.
"You guys, barricade those doors." Rick said before him, Daryl and Shane leave to sweep the building. Jack sits down with the kids, holding Haylee and Gracie. I stay in the hall holding my gun, making sure nothing gets close to the door or comes down the hall, as the others go around grabbing whatever they can find to block the doors.
I help the others block the door with a gurney and vending machine. After Andrea throws the last thing on top we hear glass cracking. We all drop to the ground and I point my gun to door just in case. But I keep my finger off the trigger so that I won't accidently shoot. I turn to see Carl holding Sophia's and Anna's hand as he tells them that it's ok.
We get up when the walker leaves, with Carol holding Gracie for me, as we all make our way to find the other guys. T-dog and I check the rooms as we pass, not wanting any surprises. Glenn and Dale are covering the back with the others in between us. We make our way to some sort of game hall, still not finding any of them.
I point my gun to the stairs when I hear something walking down, I hold my hand up to tell the others to stay back."Oh shit!" Shane says jumping back, sighing I lower my gun. "Sorry." I whisper looking at Daryl who is smirking as he comes down after Shane.
Holstering my gun, I take Gracie from Carol and we sit down in a couple of chairs that aren't near any of the bodies. "Upstairs is our best bet. We cleared a few rooms that we can barricade if we have to. We will be safe." Rick tells us, I just watch Daryl walking around the room looking at the bodies.
I look over at an elderly man to see that he has a bullet wound in his head. I close my eyes and lean my head against Anna's arm as she stands next to me. I take a few deep breaths when I realize that walkers didn't kill all these people.
"What the hell happened here?" Glenn asks softly as I rock Gracie who starts to whimper. Jack is sitting next to me and is bouncing Haylee on his knee and Anna is messing with some hanging strings on her sleeve."What do you think? They got overrun." I roll my eyes when Andrea said that.
I hear Daryl scoff while shaking his head. "You have something to say?" She asks him while crossing her arms. "Yeah how bout observant." He said glaring at Andrea. "Observant. A big word from a guy like you, three whole syllables." She is really starting to piss me off.
"Walkers didn't do this. Geeks didn't show up till after all this went down. Someone attacked this place, taking whatever they wanted. They were all shot in the head, execution style. You all afraid of walkers, I would be much more afraid of whoever came and did all this." He explains and Rick leans closer to one of dead to see the bullet wound.
Daryl looks over to Andrea. "Get a dictionary. Look it up, observant." He tells her, while pointing to his head before he starts for the door, I had to hide my smirk as he passes, but I think he caught it. We get up and make our way up to the rooms that they had cleared out, all of us walking into the biggest room, none of us really wanting to be too far from the others.
We sit down as Shane and Rick go off to see if there is any food, while T-dog goes to the stairs to keep watch. When Shane and Rick come back, Shane tosses Daryl a can and he tells us that is all that is left. "So we came back for cough drops and garbanzo beans." He said as he starts to open the can.
"Is there any water?" Sophia asks aloud. So I grab my bag and start going through it. "Just the one bottle I had. Only a few sips hun, ok and that goes for the rest of you." Shane said handing Sophia his water bottle. I pull out the three water bottles from my bag and the two bags of beef jerky, setting them next to me as Shane pulls out a few bags of chips and a bottle of wine.
"Is that to share?" Daryl asks Shane when he sees the bottle. "Seeing as I owe you my life. See uh… I'm going to be nice to you from now on." Shane said before passing the bottle to him. "Go easy on that stuff, don't forget where we are." Lori said to him as starts to open the bottle. "Yes ma'am." He told her opening the bottle.
"Where did you get all that?" Glenn asks stunned which makes everyone look at me, which makes me a little nervous. "I packed a bug out bag for each of us, when we left the apartment, in case we had to leave everything behind. It has food, water, a first aid kit and a change of clothes, a knife, matches that sort of stuff." I said like it was obvious, I hand Glenn the beef jerky so he can pass it around.
I get some weird stares from everyone before they go back to eating. Daryl looks at me smirking a little. Carol pats my shoulder saying thank you. "What's next? We need to decide." Lori said getting up and asking Rick. "Fort Benning, Rick." Shane said as I start to change Gracie's diaper as Rick tells Shane he should have listened to him.
"Who would do this, come in here and kill all these people, its sick. I mean who does that." When Glenn said that Jack pulls Anna closer to him and I rub Haylee's back. "Is that something we should be discussing right now?" Lori asks him moving to a scared Carl and sits down next to him on the other side of Jack.
All the guys get up and walks outside to discuss what we are going to do next, Daryl grabs the door looking at me before he closes it. Jack and Glenn come back a little while later after grabbing clean blankets and pillows for all of us.
Laying a blanket on the floor, I put Haylee and Gracie on one side and Anna, Sophia and Carol on the other side. Carl and Lori are on the other side of me. I look across from me to see Daryl sitting against the wall, both of us just staring at each other, as I rub Gracie's tummy and play with Haylee's hair. I fall asleep while looking into his blue eyes.
We all wake up early and we start packing up quietly and then leave the building just after the sun comes up. We are going to be leaving T-dogs van and Daryl's truck to save on fuel. T-dog siphons out the gas out of them and put some in the RV and Merle's bike. My Expedition is great on fuel, so I will be good for a little while longer.
I have the trunk hatch open and I am putting in the extra pillows and blankets down when Daryl comes walking up to me. He slids his hand across my back, as he looks in the back and gives Anna a small smile, who is fixing her space and she smiles back.
"You can put your stuff in here, so you don't need to leave any of it behind." I tell him and when he nods his head, we walk over to his truck and grab his tent and his and Merle's bags. "Thanks." He said after I close the trunk, Anna will be staying in the back. "It's no problem." I smile at him before he walks over and get on, I guess his bike now.
A shiver goes down my spine when he starts it up. I have to calm down before getting behind the wheel, the girls are in their car seats and Jack is next to them in the back. Daryl takes off first then the RV, Rick and then me, as we start on our way out of Atlanta.
We have been driving for a few hours now, Jack had moved the girls down in the back with Anna, so that they could take a nap. We start to slow down and I can see a lot of cars up ahead, so there is a road block of some sort up ahead.
Stopping behind Rick, Jack and I get out and while Jack goes to see why we have stopped, I climb in the back seat. I grab the battery powered fans and turn them on the sleeping girls, since I don't want any of the windows down too far.
I shut the door and walk up to the others, to find out that the RV hose is broke again, it's not much of a surprise though. "I told you I needed the hose from the cube van. But where are we gonna find…" He stops and looks around at all the abandoned cars. "Ok, that was dumb."
"If you can't find a radiator hose here…" Shane said looking at all the cars."There's a bunch of things we can find." Daryl said while going through one of the cars.
"I can siphon more fuel from these cars for a start." T-dog said as we walk away from the RV. "Maybe some water?" Carol asks. "Or food." Glenn said seeing as how we hardly have any food left. "This is a graveyard. I don't know how I feel about this." Lori said to us. We all get quiet and look at her.
"Tell that to your son when he's starving. That you wouldn't go through abandon cars because you didn't feel right." I snap at her before walking off not even looking back, stupid bitch.
Jack and I are looking through our fifth car, putting anything of real use, in box that he had found. We found some canned food, some sports drinks, and odds and ends like that, I even found some good boots that will fit Jack or Glenn.
I look up from a suitcase to see Shane signaling to us to get under the cars, as he pulls Glenn under the truck they are next too. I turn around to see over fifty walkers coming our way but they haven't seen us yet. Jack and I crouch down, dropping the box and then hide behind the cars, moving farther away from them.
There is nowhere we can hide since all the cars around us are too low. Jack tugs my hand to a truck and we quickly get underneath it. Jack and I pull out our knives and put our backs together as the walkers start walking by, we just barely missed them.
I have to cover my mouth to keep from making any noise when some of the walkers bump into the truck. I hope that the girls are ok, they must be so scared. I can't hear any screaming so that is good thing. It seems like forever as they stumble pass, slowly dragging their feet.
I am about to get out when I see another pair of feet walking our way so I grab Jack's side, so he won't move, it is walking very slowly. It trips over its own feet and falls to the ground, I sit still and wide eyed, both of us trying not to breathe.
Its rotted face slowly turns to me and before it can move, I shove my knife right in its eye, scraping my arm real bad on the gravel, but I kill it. Pushing Jack to leave on his side, I pull my knife out which makes a squishy sound as it comes out.
I shuffle over and out on the other side and with Jack's help, I get up but I stay crouched down just in case. "Come on." I whisper and pull Jack's hand while holding my knife tightly and we make our way back to the others. I grab a t-shirt as I pass a car and wrap it around my arm when it was starts to bleed badly.
We slowly make are way back to the others and away from the pack… the herd of walkers. I didn't know we were so far away, until right then. When I see the others near the RV, Jack and I take off running towards them. I run as fast as I can and made my way to my car, passing everybody.
Running up, I fling the door open and climb inside to see Anna holding the girls farther in the back hiding underneath a blanket, sighing I climb in to the back with them. I hug them with my left arm not wanting to get blood on them.
"Oh god, your arm." Anna said pulling away from me and looks at it. "It's ok. It's just a scrap, nothing else." I tell her looking in her eyes, so she would understand it isn't a bite or a scratch. Jack comes over and opens the trunk hatch, as Anna grabs the first aid bag.
The girls are lying down behind me, while Jack helps clean and wraps my right arm. "T-dog hurt his arm real bad too and umm…"Jack said I just nod as he tapes down the bandage. He climbs in the back with the girls so that I can look at T's arm.
I grab the bag and kissed the girls, before jumping out and closing the trunk. I walk up to the others to see them piling the stuff up near the RV, I can see the others moving some cars too. Dale seeing me walking up points to the RV.
I climb inside to see T-dog holding a towel to his arm, I set the bag down and lift the towel just, for more blood seep out. I grab another clean towel and quickly trade it, pressing down a little harder and he hisses and jerks and he tries to pull his arm away, I just hold on tighter. "Sorry." I said as I pull out some alcohol.
"Do what you need to." He tells me before crying out when I pour some on it and then some bottled water. I wrap it tight, but not too tight so it can still breathe. I give him some pain meds and he gets up and leaves. I clean up before walking out just to see everyone standing around against the railing so I walk over to them.
"Is that blood?" Carol asks looking at Daryl's pants. "We took down a walker. It was nowhere near Sophia." Rick told her trying to reassure her. "How can you be sure?" Andrea asks and Daryl looks to me before answering. "We cut the son of bitch open, made sure." He said looking to Carol.
Carol sits down and looks up at Rick. "How could you just leave her out there, all alone?" Confused I looked around, I cover my mouth when I realize Sophia is gone, Glenn pulls me to his side and I hug him back. Pulling away after I calm down, I walk back to my car and climb inside and trade places with Jack, who gets out and shuts the trunk.
I sit next to girls and after they eat some dinner they lay down and go right to sleep. I just sit there when Jack climbs into the passenger seat and reclines the seat back. I lay my head down on the pillow and close my eyes.
The next morning when Anna finally wakes up, I had to tell her about Sophia. I hold her close and we both cry, everything in the past few months finally catching up to us. After Haylee and Gracie wake up, we climb out of the car and go to the others to see what we are going to do.
I make sure Haylee and Anna stay very close to me. I don't want them out of the car for too long, the highway is not safe. As the girls go to the bathroom I find out that the others are going to go out to look for Sophia in a little while. I am going to stay behind with Dale, T-dog and the kids.
After feeding the kids some breakfast, I put Haylee and Gracie back in to the car with some toys and the fans on. I stand next to Anna as Rick lays down a roll of knives and an axe. "Everyone takes a weapon." He said as he looks around at everyone.
"These aren't the weapons we need. What about the guns?" Andrea asks and I just shake my head, how stupid is she, guns make too much noise. I was glad that Shane explaines it to her, I would think she would know this by now.
"The plan is to walk the creek five miles, turn around and walked the other side back. Chances are she will be by water." Daryl said before walking off and Shane tells them to pack their bags and I look down at Anna when she tugs on my arm. "I want to go with them and look for Sophia. Can I go?" She said looking at me, sighing I close my eyes.
"Ok, but I want you to stay close to your brother or stay close to someone else. Come on let's get you your bag." I tell her very reluctantly but she will be with Jack, Daryl and the others. We walk back to the car, which is now just a little behind the RV.
Opening the door she reaches in and grabs her bag pack from the floor under Gracie's car seat. She hurries and makes her way to Jack and the others, who are leaving. I walk up to Dale and T-dog and we watch the others leave.
"I'll start sorting everything between all the cars." I tell them after looking to the pile of stuff everyone has collected. Dale nods his head, before making his way up onto the top of the RV to keep watch. I am about half way through the pile, when T-dog asks Dale why he isn't fixing the hose, Dale cunningly had fixed it yesterday.
He doesn't what the other to know though because he knows sooner or later they would want to leave, even if they don't find Sophia."That is one tricky hose, huh." T-dog said up to Dale "Very." Dale said smiling a little. "Did you hear that?" T-dog jokes while looking at me. "Hear what?" I laugh while shaking my head as I carry a box to Carol's car. Hearing both of them laughing as I walk passed.
After putting the box away, I walk over to my car and open the trunk and sit down with the girls. Giving Haylee her sippy cup and Gracie a bottle both filled with water. After I change Gracie she falls right to sleep, sucking on her binky.
After shutting the trunk I take Haylee up to the RV, so that she can use the rest room. She sits there yawning on the toilet, I try not to laugh but it was so cute. I take her back to the car so she can take a nap too. I finish packing the stuff between all the cars, I'll leave the water jugs for someone else to put away.
I am picking up the last bag, when what sounds like a gunshot, goes off in the distance. I look up to Dale who looks franticly around the trees, than to the both sides of the highway. He looks down at me and T-dog and shakes his head. I look to the trees hoping that everything is ok.
