As Saturday came Link enjoyed the weekend morning by laying languidly his bed. He had decided to stop training last night at around 2 in the morning and sleep for the rest of it before his body woke him up at dawn per usual.
He was awake, but for some unexplainable reason the Hero of Twilight had no urge to move from his position on the bed. For once since he arrived in England, he felt no need to keep his guard up or felt the rushing need to do something. It was a peaceful feeling… and a very unsettling one as well.
However Link was usually right when it concerned his instincts about these types of things, so he continued to lie in his bed, enjoying the sunlight coming from the window that fell upon his form.
In this time, as the sun gently continued to rise, Link let his mind wander, unburden with the constant need to guard Harry. Slowly, those letters were what his mind turned to.
Just like that, his peaceful morning was ruined.
Link groaned and lifted his hand to rub the bridge of his nose between his index finger and his thumb. Just thinking about those letters gave him a headache.
They were the letters he had been constantly receiving from Zelda, Midna, and seemingly all of Hyrule. After nearly two months he still hadn't open one.
' It's easier to forget about them while teaching a school of children…' Link thought bitterly as he now glared into the canopy above his bed. Suddenly, there was a familiar tapping at his window. One that was defiantly not needed at the moment.
Reluctantly, Link climbed out of his warm bed, only pausing to pull on a pair of dark jeans before going to the window and opening it. As expect, Nirus flew in, lightly landing on Link's desk with a new stack of letters tied around his leg.
The Hero sometimes wondered how Nirus could even fly straight with so many letters.
" More?" Link asked the owl, already knowing the answer as he closed the window. Nirus looked at him as if to ask,' What do you think?'
Link rolled his eyes." Cheeky bird." He muttered before sitting down at the desk and untying the letters from the bird's leg. There were five of them this time, all with the same Royal Hylian seal on it.
For a while Link just stared at them. Finally he sighed and opened a drawer in his desk revealing nothing but the same decorative envelopes with the royal Hylian seal on them, and, occasionally, the royal Twilight seal on them. There had to be nearly thirty of them in all.
The blond grabbed the five letters, letting them fall into the drawer and shutting it tightly.
"Thank you Nirus. I'll open the window again-" but Link fell silent as he stared back at the desk.
For there, lying where the other five letters had been, hidden behind the bulky decorative designs, were two small letters in smaller, plainer envelopes with no name or stamp on them.
To say Link was curious would be an understatement.
He glanced at Nirus, as if to ask the bird who sent them but the owl was currently busy preening his feathers so Link left him alone.
He turned back to the letters and studied them again, staring at them. He began arguing with himself whether he should open them or just throw them into the drawer with the rest of the letters he got from Hyrule.
' But these might not be from Hyrule.' Link mused, and it was that thought that allowed him to make up his mind. He reached for the first envelope and opened it, taking out the plain letter within.
Link,
If it truly takes me having to disguise my letters to get you to at least open and read them, know I will be very disappointed.
I know you are supposedly busy with protecting a new charge, but are you truly so busy as to ignore letters from a dear friend?
More than one dear friend in fact.
I understand why you left Hyrule Link. Truly, I do. You were not happy here after Gannondorf was defeated. Even your own life in Ordon village, you once told me, no longer brought you peace. Not to mention the multiple people who would fawn after you as you walked through the streets. You never did like so much attention, did you my friend?
Especially if that attention was of the negative sort. Do not try to lie to me Link; I know that it was not only the fawning and dullness of a routine life that made you want to leave. You are so much like a wolf my friend, and there is no wolf alive that wants to be stuck in a glittering gold cage being stared at and judged on how well he does tricks. The nobility of Hyrule is demanding in how well the wolf preforms his tricks, are they not?
I know when you left Hyrule there was no intention of you ever returning to these lands. After all you have given for the people in it, yet they demand more. I know that as you left the borders of Hyrule, you planned on breaking all ties with the people in it. Including your dear friends.
I refuse to allow that to happen Link. You are my friend, and even if most of Hyrule fawns over you or judges you, not all of us do. You are still loved Hero, please do not forget that.
I await your letter, dear friend.
Yours truly,
Zelda
Link stared at the letter for what seemed like hours, but was probably only minutes. If there was one thing he remembered Zelda being able to do, it was make a filled room speechless when she spoke, and here she was, doing it to Link over a letter.
The Hero closed his eyes and dropped the letter on the table, the Princess of Hyrule's elegant handwriting practically taunting him with guilt.
" She knows me way to well." Link muttered to the ceiling before looking back down at the desk to the second letter.
He looked at Nirus, who had stopped preening his feathers and cocked his head at him curiously.
" What do you want to be that second letter is from Midna?" He asked the bird. Nirus stared at him as if to say,' Well of course it is foolish human.'
Link rolled his eyes again and grabbed the second letter and opened it.
Wolfie-
If Zelda's right and it takes disguising letters to get you to read them, the next time I see you, you're getting a full on hair slap. And it's going to hurt more because I have more hair then before.
I mean honestly Hero! After all we've been through I figured even if you don't open any from Zelda or Hyrule you would at least read mine! Is Zelda right in saying that you are really trying to break all ties—and friendships—related to Hyrule? Even with me?
I know I made you my slave for a while but I honestly thought you were over it by now!
I have a feeling you smiled right there, was I right?
On a serious note though, whatever Zelda wrote in her letter to you I am backing it up right now and agreeing with her. Because knowing Zelda she wrote a seriously guilt tripping letter. At least that's what it looks like as she is writing it right now.
Look Wolfie, I know things got bad in Hyrule for you, especially after I destroyed the mirror. That is the entire reason I made a spell to create a portal for me that allows me to travel to and from Hyrule. I do not just go around creating spells for anyone in case you did not know!
Anyways, I understand why you left, but I do not understand why you are breaking ties with the people who love you.
There is this little boy from Ordon who keeps coming to the castle with his father, do you know that? Every time he comes it's with a new letter to you. His father brings new letters from the other people of Ordon on occasion, but he mostly tries to limit the letters he brings because he is worried that it is impolite to ask Zelda to send so many for them.
I can see it in their eyes every time Zelda has to tell them that you have not responded. If you do not think Zelda and I care and love you Link, those two defiantly do.
So I am going to say it Wolfie. You have finally made me, Princess of Twilight, say it.
Please.
Please respond. Please don't break off all of your relations to Hyrule. Please write back.
We all miss you Link. We really do.
So assure us that you are still alive you silly Wolfie!
Your dear friend,
Midna
Link could have laughed at Midna's letter but it wouldn't have stopped the overwhelming feeling of guilt he felt growing in his heart. He smiled ruefully at the letter before setting it down next to Zelda's.
" A boy and his father huh?"
Link knew who they were immediately. Rusl and Colin. That fact only made his heart hurt worse. To know that Rusl, the man who treated him like his second son, and Colin, who treated him like an older brother, were so upset by his lack of reply…
' This is why I never opened them. I wanted a clean break.' Link groaned internally, putting his elbows on his desk and his head in his hands.
Nirus stepped forward cautiously and let out a light chirp by his ear, as though asking if he was alright. Link didn't respond to the bird, his mind racing.
Suddenly he clenched his fists together tightly against his head." I'm going to regret this." Link said aloud before sitting up and grabbing a piece of parchment, inkwell and quill from his desk.
He placed the items on the surface and opened the inkwell, dipping the quill into it.
" Dear Zelda and Midna…"
It was halfway through breakfast by the time Link made it to the Great Hall. Most of the students and some of the teachers had already gathered, each one looking at the still lit goblet with great interest.
Link had seen too many magical objects in his life to really care too much about a bejeweled goblet, so he just went to his place on the table, and sat down without a single glance to it.
" Oh Link dear, have you heard?"
The Hero raised his head curiously. Not many people, students or teachers, bothered him in the morning.
He looked to the teacher who had spoken to him. He found it to be the Herbology teacher, Professor Pomona Sprout.
" Heard what Ms. Pomona?" Link asked her, remembering her earlier question.
The head of Hufflepuff had her eyes lit up with amusement as she asked," You know of the age line Albus drew around the Goblet to keep underage wizards and witches from putting their name in, yes?"
Link quickly glanced at said age line, which was in a perfect circle around the Goblet of Fire.
" Indeed. What about it? Are students talking about getting across it?" The Hylian asked.
" Not talking, but actually trying!" She giggled, trying to hold back her laughter. Link's eyebrows rose in surprise.
" It's those Weasley twins you see! You know, I'm assuming, about how they like testing their boundaries and trying to break the rules. Well they thought they could be clever, creating a potion to fool the age line! Why this morning they brought it down here to the Great Hall and in front of everyone, drank the potion and stepped over the age line!" She said, barely holding back her laughter.
" And what happened?" Link asked, intrigued.
Pomona covered her mouth for a moment to keep herself from bursting out into laughter.
" They couldn't fool the age line and walked to Hospital Wing with white hair like the Head Master's and a beard just as long!" That was the last straw for the Herbology teacher as she started laughing.
Infectious as her laugh was, Link couldn't help but grin a little at the thought of the twins in such a state. Wonder what Mrs. Weasley would say about that.
After the informational breakfast, Link decided he was long after due for a visit to Hagrid. Free of his teaching duties for the day, he walked out of the castle and down to the hut of the half giant with a relaxed stride. He walked up to the hut's door and knocked on it.
" Com'ng!" He heard the voice bellow and the quick movement of footsteps along the wooden cabin floors. Suddenly the door opened and Hagrid filled the doorframe.
" 'ink!" Hagrid smiled, beaming brightly. Fang was barking up a storm behind him.
Link cocked and eyebrow in a confused surprise.
" Hagrid, please do not take this in a rude manner, but what in the name of the Goddesses are you wearing?" The Hylian asked.
The half giant began blushing
" Oh-err- it's jus' a little something I've ha' for a while now." Hagrid said, nearly as red as a tomato.
The Grounds Keeper was wearing a giant, hairy brown suit and a checkered yellow and orange tie. His hair also had the beginnings of what looked like grease in it, which Link assumed was meant to try and tame his hair. He assumed that anyways.
" I see… may I come in?" Link asked.
" Oh of cou'se!" Hagrid said, grinning largely now and stepping aside to allow him in.
Link entered the hut, which looked just like he remembered from his last visit.
He saw Fang, up on his feet, looking at Link and giving out another bark. Link's eyes flashed. Fang whimpered momentarily before lying down on his stomach, with his head on his paws with a loud 'huff'.
Hagrid led him over to an empty seat at the table and offered it to him.
Once he sat down, Link couldn't stop himself from asking any longer.
" Hagrid, if I may, why are you so… dressed up?" Link asked. This sent Hagrid into another wave of blushes.
" I-it's- no particular reason." He stammered.
" I'm sure." Link said, arching his eyebrow.
Hagrid looked at him for a moment and then sighed, dropping his gaze to the table.
" I migh' be meetin' someone later." he said finally.
" And does this someone have a name?" Link asked, grinning slightly. Hagrid just blushed deeper.
Link let out a chuckle, and Hagrid's head lowered as if ashamed." Hagrid, there's nothing to be ashamed about having a crush on someone. It's perfectly normal, and I'm glad you do." Link told him, causing Hagrid's head to shoot back up.
" You do?" Hagrid asked, surprised.
" Of course. Why wouldn't I be?" Link asked curious.
" It's jus' that-" Hagrid trailed off, not looking at Link again. The Hero looked at him with concern, and then, surprise.
" Hagrid, this isn't your first crush, is it?" Link asked. Hagrid blushed deeper.
" Not exac'ly. It's the firs' one I think migh' really work." Hagrid admitted. Link looked at the half giant, impressed.
" Then that just makes me happier for you Hagrid. Really, I'm glad." Link said honestly, the Grounds Keeper looking up at him as if to see how sincerely he meant it.
He must have found what he was looking for, because Hagrid broke out into a wide smile.
" Thanks 'ink. Means a lot." Hagrid said to him. Link just smiled back in return.
For the next half hour they continued talking about different things, occasionally going back to Hagrid's crush on 'someone', but Link had a feeling he was starting to guess correctly who it was. Suddenly someone knocked on the door, interrupting their conversation as Fang barked loudly.
" 'Bout time! Thought you lot'd forgotten where I live!" Hagrid bellowed while Link gave another sharp look to Fang who immediately settled down.
" We've been really busy, Hag-" Link knew the moment Hermione's voice fell silent was when they realized what he was wearing." Erm-" he heard Hermione began, trying not to say anything clearly," Where are the skrewts?"
" Out by the pumpkin patch. They're getting' massive, mus' be nearly three foot long now. On'y trouble is, they've started killin' each other." Hagrid replied.
"Oh no, really?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah. 'S'okay, though, I've got 'em in separate boxes now. Still got abou' twenty." Hagrid told them, a little sad.
" Well that's lucky." Ron stated and Link almost rolled his eyes. It was a good thing Hagrid could easily miss sarcasm of nearly every kind.
" Indeed it is Hagrid." Link said, stepping around the half giant into the view of Harry, Hermione and Ron.
"Oh, Professor Link! We didn't realize you were here!" Hermione said, surprised.
" 'e came for a visit." Hagrid smiled.
" Yes, but I see you have new guests to entertain now Hagrid. I will be going then." Link told him, exiting the hut.
"We're not trying to kick you out professor-" Harry began immediately.
" It's fine. I've been having a lesson plan in my head for a while no anyways, and the rest of my free time today will allow me to work on it." Link assured them. He turned to Hagrid.
" I hope everything works out Hagrid, and I am sorry for cutting my visit so short." Link told him.
" 'S fine 'Ink. Thanks for visitin'!" Hagrid smiled. With a smile and nod to Hagrid, and then to the trio, Link turned around and walked back up to the castle.
As soon as he entered the building, he wanted to walk right back out. If he did that though, he would be showing fear, because as soon as he walked into the building, he could feel them staring at him. The fangirls. His most irritating and persistent enemy to date.
Link could feel their eyes watching him as he walked back up to the security of his classroom, and could hear their giggling and their footsteps as they followed him. He swore he heard a few French accents in their whispers as well.
' Great… they're spreading on an international.' Link groaned mentally, but kept a blank face on. If he could just get to his classroom before their vicious talons caught him, he would be fine.
Sadly, he didn't make it quick enough.
The light blue of her clothing alerted him to her status as a Beauxbatons student. She was pretty with light silvery-blond hair that fell around her shoulders and blue eyes. Link started debating if he could make a clean break to his office door by running around her, since it was only a few feet away.
" Hello Professeur." She said in a light voice with a decently strong accent.
" Hello, now if you will excuse me-"
" Un moment s'il vous plait, Professeur. I was won'ering about ze classez you teach." She said.
Link stared at her for a moment, confused briefly.
" I'm sorry, but have we met before? You seem familiar?" Link asked her. She seemed to smile brighter.
" We 'ave met once in ze forest at ze Quidditch Tournament. You said to me zat you did not know w'ere Madam Maxime waz." The student explained.
" I remember. I am glad to see you found her." He stated.
" Yes, I 'ave. Anyways I was 'oping zat you cou'd 'elp me with my Defense Against Ze Dark Arts. Since I am 'oping to become ze champion of Beauxbatons, I wou'd appreziate your expertise in ze subject. Very appreciative Monsieur Professeur." She smiled, looking at him enticingly.
Link could literally feel his insides shrink and wither from the horror of it all.
" I am glad you think so highly of me Mademoiselle, however I'm afraid at this moment I have other things I must attend to. Good day Miss." Link said.
" Un moment Professeur-!" But Link had already ducked around her racing towards his office door with a quick pace.
He opened the door and flung it shut as soon as he entered, making sure to lock it for good measure. He shivered slightly from what just happened moments ago.
" Ugh… fangirls."
After locking himself in his classroom and creating a lesson plan for the next three weeks, Link finally decided it was time to go back outside. The Halloween Feast would begin soon, and with it the names of the Triwizard Champions.
Dressing out of the dark jeans and casual shirt he had worn for most of the day, he changed back into his preferred black outfit for the feast, before unlocking his classroom door and leaving to the Great Hall.
By the time he arrived the students had nearly all gathered, eager to get the feast started so that they could find out who the Champions were.
The Goblet was place right in front of Dumbledore's chair, which was currently empty.
Dumbledore instead was sitting in another chair, both seats on either side of him having been immediately claimed by Madam Maxime and Karkaroff.
His usual seat was still empty though, and he happily took it, noting that both Ludo Bagman and Bartemius Crouch were also there, though the Head of International Magical Cooperation looked like he wanted to be anywhere but.
As the last of the students and faculty trickled in, the golden plates became covered with food, and everyone immediately began to dig into the feast.
As he ate, Link noticed how the students kept glancing towards the head table or, more specifically Dumbledore. Some of the teachers had even finished faster than normal, and were waiting expectantly for the Head Master to finish.
'Eager are we?' Link thought amusedly, before finishing off his meal.
Not long after, the last of the food disappeared off the plates and the loud noise the Great Hall was usually thrown into, silenced itself almost the moment Dumbledore stood up.
" Well, the goblet is almost ready to make its decision. I estimate that it requires one more minute. Now, when the champions' names are called, I would ask them please to come up to the top of the Hall, walk along the staff table, and go through into the next chamber where they will be receiving their first instructions." Dumbledore announced, motioning to the door he described.
Afterwards, Dumbledore pulled out his wand and gave it a sweeping wave and all the candles except those still lit in the pumpkins blew out immediately. Eyes were drawn back to the goblet, which was the brightest thing in the room now.
Link couldn't help but stare at it as well, a little intrigued and caught in the moment thanks to Dumbledore setting the mood for it.
" Any second…" Link could hear quietly whispered out from the dark mass of students.
Suddenly, the blue and white color of the flames turned red and sparks flew from it. Out of a tongue of fire came a small, slightly burned piece of parchment, sending the entire room into a communal gasp.
As the flames turned back to the blue and white color before, Dumbledore caught the paper, and held it out to read it.
" The champion for Durmstrang, will be Victor Krum." He announced in a strong voice.
" No surprises there!" Link could hear Ron yell just before the entire room erupted into thundering applause.
Victor rose up from the Slytherin table and walked towards Dumbledore before turning right and walking along the table to the side door. Link clapped politely for the Champion as he passed.
" Bravo, Victor! Knew you had it in you!" Karkaroff boomed loudly in cheer.
Eventually the cheering and clapping died down and everyone's attention was back on the goblet which turned red again as another piece of parchment flew out from it as well. Dumbledore caught it in his hand and held it out once more.
"The champion for Beauxbatons, if Fleur Delacour!"
Link clapped once more, but then froze as he saw whom Fleur was.
' The same girl from the forest and the one that cornered me in the hall today!' Link groaned. He kept his face emotionless as she glanced at him while she walked past, smiling at him before she walked through the door.
Once again the silence fell, and all eyes returned to the goblet.
The flames turned red once more and Dumbledore caught the last piece of paper as it fluttered down and into his hands.
" The Hogwarts champion, is Cedric Diggory!" Dumbledore announced.
' Honestly could say I did not see that one coming,' Link thought more amused then anything before raising his hands and clapping along with the rest of the hall for the Hufflepuff.
Cedric stood up from the table as all of his housemates jumped up from the table, wildly clapping and cheering. The newly named champion himself was grinning hugely at everyone as he walked up to the front as well, before turning right and continuing to and through the side door.
"Excellent!" Dumbledore said happily after the remaining claps and cheers died down.
"Well, we now have our three champions. I am sure I can count upon all of you, including the remaining students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, to give your champions every ounce of support you can muster. By cheering your champion on, you will contribute in a very real-" but Dumbledore was interrupted, and in a very bad way.
Link watched, stunned like the rest of the school, as the goblet's fires turned red once more, and a fourth piece of parchment flew out from it's flames.
The Hero watched, his body tense and sense's blaring warnings, as Dumbledore seemed to automatically catch it in the death silence of the hall.
He held it out to the fire of the goblet, reading the name on it. Link had a very bad feeling as the Head Master cleared his throat, and what happened next only confirmed the fact his bad feelings were always right.
" Harry Potter."
As promised, no later than Tuesday.
Anyways I hope this was an okay chapter. It's defiantly longer than the rest of them, but that's mainly because I tried to delve into more about Link then the HP plot line.
Since I want to have more Legend of Zelda things in Harry Potter, I thought it would help by easing into it with the letters. I tried to make the reasons Link really left Hyrule as clear as possible without outright stating it. If anyone's still confused, please tell me and I will be happy to explain it and make sure later chapters explain it better.
Alright, now quickly I would like to address a few recent reviews:
BrandonBGamer: Your idea is actually really clever in the way of combining Pokemon with Harry Potter, but I'm afraid I can't really work it into the story how it's already planned to progress. Sorry, but as much as I like the idea I'm not sure how to peacefully incorporate it... or explain how Newt Scamander would make an appearance in it either. Thank you for the idea though!
Lycropanthy: Right now I'm not really specifying how Link went from Hyrule to England. Perhaps in later chapters, but as of this moment I'm letting you, as the readers, interpret it yourselves. (Plus I'd have to do a lot of thinking to untangle how Nirus can go there too ^.^') Eventually I will probably explain it, but not now.
And that's it for reviews!
Alright, last part. Since many of you can testify that I haven't been a star updater recently, I've decided to try this since I've seen other authors do it and I think it will help me update on time and more often. So, here goes nothing:
Next Update: Jan. 21st
Latest: Jan. 23rd
Okay! Now that's everything. Thank you for reading, and please let me know if there seems to be anything off grammar or story wise in the chapter!
