Chapter 41
It was the following day, and Fitz was lying across the couch in the Oval Office, unable to get his mind off what had happened the night before. He was furious that Ethan Daniels, of all people, thought he could outsmart him. NOBODY outsmarted The President, Fitz thought, and there was no way he could let Daniels get away with this. He had to come up with a plan, he had to-
His thoughts were interrupted by Cyrus bursting through the doors of the Oval Office. His face was as red as a fire hydrant.
"What… the hell… did you do?!" Cyrus asked, barely managing to get each word out between breaths.
"What are you talking about?" Fitz asked him.
"I'm talking about this!" Cyrus picked the TV remote up off the table before Fitz. After fumbling with the remote for a second, Cyrus managed to get it on the news and Fitz's mouth dropped open.
"Continuing our story, we have breaking news," the reporter said. "We discovered that President Fitzgerald Grant has confessed to rigging the Presidential election."
"Wait." Fitz remarked. "How could they…" Then he remembered Ethan's threat the night before, the camera that had been in Huck's hands…but…he had destroyed it!? HOW!?
"They're playing this on every damn media outlet in the entire WORLD!" Cyrus yelled out.
The doors to the Oval Office flew open once again. Men in military uniform stormed the room and Ethan Daniels was standing among them, wearing his brigadier general uniform.
"Fitzgerald Thomas Grant, the Third," Ethan addressed him. "We have a warrant for your arrest for fraud and treason against The United States. You must come with us."
"What are you talking about?" Fitz scoffed.
"You're under arrest for Fraud and Treason. Now, we can do this the easy way, or it can go hard," Ethan insisted. "It's up to you."
"Get this man out of my office!" Fitz ordered his Secret Servicemen, but the only moves they made, were to back away from Fitz completely.
"I get that's your choice," Ethan said with a sigh. "We'll do it your way." Pulling out a pair of handcuffs, he approached Fitz.
"You can't do this…" Fitz insisted.
"Oh, really? Watch me." Ethan grabbed Fitz quickly and slammed him on top of the desk.
"You have the right to remain silent," Ethan began, reading the man his rights as he cuffed him while his elbow was lodged into Fitz's head. "Anything you can say or do will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney…" He pulled Fitz up and then shoved him into the hands of the waiting Military Police.
"Take him away, boys," Ethan told them.
As Ethan turned to the television, he saw David Rosen on there now, addressing the media and sharing more details about Fitz's arrest. Cyrus, clearly flabbergasted, was looking at Ethan in a state of shock.
"I think it's best that you just don't get involved," Ethan told him. Then he walked out.
An hour later, Fitz still found himself in a state of disbelief. He'd begun the day in the Oval Office, like it was business as usual. Now, here he was in the exact same holding cells area that he'd kept Ethan in. Except now the roles were reversed, and Ethan was the one smirking back at him from the other side of the bars. Ethan couldn't help but chuckle before him.
"Wow, who saw this coming?" Ethan asked. "To think, you're actually in jail."
"Let me out of here!" Fitz growled.
"I certainly will not, you traitorous pig," Ethan replied. "We got it all. All the evidence and all the information we need to implicate you in that little election rigging. We tracked down your co-conspirators, too, and can you believe it? They're ALL willing to send you up the river in exchange for immunity.
"So," Ethan said with a smirk. "You might wanna get comfortable in that cell. I'd recommend that you pray to God and ask for His forgiveness. That, or you can kill yourself. Makes no difference to me.
"In the meantime, I'm going to head on home and enjoy holding my wife. You remember my wife, right - the woman you can't have? As a matter of fact, yeah." Ethan paused as though thinking on something. "A family trip may be in order. It's a must after all this shit you put us through.
"Oh, well," Ethan said, with a final smirk. "Have fun in here." He almost wanted to wait and see if Fitz had a reply, but then decided against it.
Ethan left the holding cells area and then went straight to OPA headquarters. When he walked inside, he found Olivia and her staff all gathered before the television. Ethan placed a gentle hand on his wife's shoulder and she looked up at him with a smile.
"Well, how'd it go?" Olivia asked him, after her husband had planted a kiss on her lips.
"It felt SO good slamming him on his own desk," Ethan admitted and Olivia couldn't help but to laugh. She latched onto her husband and held him tightly.
"It's finally over," she said softly.
"It is," Ethan replied, pulling his wife in even closer. "By the way, you did an amazing job preparing that file on Fitz, Liv. And Rosen was definitely the right choice."
The sound of footsteps on the concrete floor made Fitz look up from his cell bed. He hadn't been expecting any other visitors tonight. But he squinted out into the darkness and, before he knew it, he saw the eyes of Solomon Grundy staring back at him. As Solomon stepped into the light, Fitz saw a blank expression on Solomon's face at first, but that soon gave way to a wicked smile.
"Well, well," Solomon mused. "Look what we have here."
"What… what are you going to do me?" Fitz asked. The look in Solomon's eyes was making him very uncomfortable. Afraid, even.
"As per my duties, I am required to neutralize all threats to this country," Solomon replied, "both foreign and domestic." He leaned in closer to the bars, his evil grin spreading wider still. "So, with that being said… guess who's going to die very, VERY soon?"
"Don't worry though," Solomon informed him. "I'm an expert at interrogation and torture. I'll make it as painfully slow as possible."
"Alright let's take him out boys," Solomon motioned the Guards to get Fitz.
"Follow me," Solomon said as Fitz tried to pull away from them.
"STOP this! I'm the President!" Solomon stopped and turned around at Fitz.
"A wannabe dictator maybe but you were never a President." Solomon opened the doors in front of him. The Guards tied Fitz up to the chair in the center of the room.
"In this world however," Solomon displayed his arsenal of torture devices. "I am both God…and the Devil."
"Now then," Solomon looked over at Fitz with the face of Lucifer himself. "Daniels told me to make sure this is VERY painful for you. He couldn't be here tonight because well…he rather be home screwing his wife." Solomon chuckles.
"Isn't that something? He has the woman you love at home in HIS bed right now and meanwhile you're about to get tortured to death. All because you fucked me over. Tsk Tsk." Solomon said as he put on his black gloves.
"Like I said though no need to worry," Solomon grabbed a needle and begin filling it up. "I'm an expert at this. It will just simply look like you killed yourself. Couldn't take the shame and that LONG humiliating trial that will be in the Media EVERY DAY. So, you ended it all. I'll make sure they do your body right once I'm finished with it." Solomon then started to walk over to Fitz with the needle in hand.
"NO! NO! STAY AWAY FROM ME!" Fitz yelled out in horror as Solomon walked over to him.
"You know what they say Grant," Solomon spoke with his wicked smile. "The Devil always get his due."
"Want a bit more?" Olivia was feeding Amelia in her high chair.
"Bagha!" Amelia told her mommy as she took another bite.
"Don't go too fast," Olivia chuckled.
"Good morning," Ethan said walking down kissing Olivia and Amelia.
"Hey Good morning," Olivia returned it.
"Hey Princess," Ethan smiled at Amelia tapping her nose and making her giggle.
"Let me clean up a bit," Olivia said as she grabbed the bowls while Ethan grabbed the baby.
"Breakfast good?" Ethan cleaned her little mouth up and teased her making the baby laugh even more. Ethan took her into the family room so she could play with her toys and watch her shows. Suddenly Ethan's phone went off and he grabbed it.
"Hello?" Ethan answered still holding the Baby.
"Just wanted to let you know I had fun with our little friend the other evening," Solomon told Ethan.
"So he's…"
"I was over it of course he is." Solomon chuckled. "It will make the news soon enough."
"Good," Ethan simply said. He wanted Fitz to suffer 10 times the hell he put Olivia through. Solomon was the perfect person for the job since he had a bone to pick with the foolish soul. Now he didn't have to worry about him ever bothering them again.
"Of course, I was neat as always," Solomon continued. "It will look like an accident or suicide rather."
"Sounds Good," Ethan said. "Well Goodbye I believe now we part ways."
"Well if you ever want to come back to CP9 the door is always open for you," Solomon offered.
"No thanks. I'm good." Ethan hung the phone up.
"Who was that?" Olivia asked coming out the kitchen.
"Just work stuff," Ethan shrugged.
"Nothing important at all. Isn't that right?" He lifted Amelia up in the air making the baby laugh again.
"Well that's good," Olivia said not thinking much of it.
"Say it's such a nice day, why don't we go to the Park for a bit?" Ethan suggested.
"Now that sounds good. I'll get ready," Olivia told him as they went up to change. As the family took their morning stroll, Ethan couldn't help but look at his wife and daughter with nothing but love and affection. They were his heart and soul, and it made Ethan shuddered to think just a few days ago they had almost been snatched away from him forever.
"You okay?" Olivia asked Ethan seeing he was a bit in a daze.
"I'm fine," He smiled kissing her lips and Amelia's forehead. "I'm just thinking how lucky I am to have you and Amelia."
"We're lucky to have you," Olivia kissed him again.
"Isn't that right?" She tickled Amelia making her laugh. Ethan smiled at them. In a way he couldn't really blame Fitz for wanting this. All his money, power and influence couldn't give him what Ethan had right now. So, Fitz simply tried to take it but unfortunately for him this lead to his very demise. Ethan on the other hand, just held on to his wife and daughter tighter knowing as long as they were in his arms, they were safe from anyone or anything.
