"What time will they arrive?"
Candy came back to the window for the hundredth time, hoping to see her mom's car around the corner.
She was more active than usual. Just at 6:40, his little daughter had jumped on his bed. Derek put his hands on his face and growled, though more than a snarl what he wanted to release was a roar.
He had not slept all night. A knot of nerves had settled in his stomach and his heart refused to beat at a slower pace. His body gave five hundred laps in bed, becoming entangled in the sheet over and over again.
Derek did not know why the idea of seeing that woman caused that hysteria in him. Dozens of women had been in his arms since then. He had fallen in love again before. What special thing did Penelope Garcia have that affected his mental state?
Maybe the reason was her eternal bright smile. Or maybe the beautiful brown of her eyes. Her charisma, her open character or her tenderness. Maybe he was still addicted to her kisses.
"They're here!"
The girl ran to the door so fast she almost slipped. Derek leaned out the window and saw an orange Cadillac parked in front of his house.
He watched Candy run to the car, wearing her Stitch pajamas. Rossi had given it to her a week ago and she slept with that thing on every night.
Then he saw her getting out of the Cadillac to hug her daughter. His heart hit hard against his chest, so hard it almost cut off his breath.
She had changed. Her hair was blonder and had golden flashes that danced in the sunlight. Her curves were more pronounced but, oh God, she was still wearing those Levi's like no one else. And those red painted lips. Those delicious lips ... Derek blinked quickly. He must go out to receive them.
"Look, Mom. He is Derek."
Candy was smiling from ear to ear, dragging her mother to the door of his house. Derek stuffed his hands in his pockets, visibly nervous.
"Hey how are you?"
Penelope gave her a faint smile, though she avoided looking directly into his eyes.
"I'm good, thank you. You're very kind."
"Is not she beautiful?"
Candy looked at him expectantly, with her huge chocolate eyes fixed on his face and without letting go of her mother's hand. He raised his eyebrows and swallowed hard. That was the first time he was speechless in front of a woman.
"Anne Candance, go for your sister and shut up"
The girl frowned, but obeyed nonetheless. She should know that when your mom uses your full name that means business.
He closed his eyes for a moment and released all the oxygen he had in his lungs.
"How can such a small person put you in such embarrassing situations?"
Penelope giggled and shrugged. "Well, that's how children are. You lose sleep and quality of life. You always want the best for them and yet, it seems that their favorite hobby is making you feel embarrassed. "
Derek didn't answer. He kept smiling like a fool, his hands still in his pockets. Penelope turned her head towards the car, pretending to watch the girls. That was a truly uncomfortable moment.
"Candy is right" he finally spoke, still smiling "You're beautiful"
"Well, apparently the years have treated you better than me"
He shook his head slowly, his smile had turned sad.
"You have no idea how bad I had it, you have no fucking idea"
Penelope became serious immediately. Derek crossed his arms waiting for an answer on her part.
However, when she spoke that was not satisfactory for him. Her gesture was cold as ice and her voice was clearer than ever.
"I haven't come here to give you explanations, Derek. If I'm here it's for you to meet your daughter and to be able to agree on avisiting schedule. That's all."
Derek clenched his jaw as he felt the rage running through his veins. Now he felt like a damn fool. He should be furious with her lies. She had stolen the first years of his two daughters. And yet, there he was, smiling like a moron and bringing out the miseries of his damaged heart. And Penelope had given him the last blow of reality: she didn't want to see him. She wasn't there to regain his love, much less to correct the mistakes of their relationship. She had returned there only and exclusively for their two girls.
"Don't need your explanations, Penelope" he feigned indifference as he walked towards the car "The only thing I need is my daughters"
She shrugged "I think that's right"
Derek didn't know if he should get too close to the car. The two girls were inside the vehicle and Candy seemed somewhat upset. Penelope asked him to wait inside the house and he simply obeyed.
He flopped down on the couch and placed a hand on his forehead.
How could I have been so stupid? My God, it seems I never tire of making a fool of myself in front of her. But it does not matter. Give a shit. She is my girls' mom, nothing more.
"Hey"
The sound of that voice made him open his eyes and sit up on the sofa. Derek was about to rub his eyes. That was almost impossible. Both girls were practically identical.
"Where are your mom and your sister?"
"They went to buy food," the girl said, serious as a heart attack "Mom forced me to stay here. She says I have to be with you, that's the reason we're right here. And that if I think she enjoys walking so many kilometers and losing work days for nothing. That Mr. Pattinson is not going to pay her these days so I better erase my ass face and be nice."
Derek blinked, his eyebrows raised and open-mouthed. She was really a motor-mouth. It was clear that this girl had Garcia genes in every pore of her skin.
"What is your name?"
She sat on the sofa, but didn't look at him tough. Her honey-colored eyes looked straight ahead. "Delilah"
Derek observed her nonverbal language. She was serious, too serious. Her hands were trapped between her knees and she kept her jaw clenched. It was obvious that the girl had made that trip against her will.
"I'm not a princess, I'm a Khalessi" Derek read aloud "What is a Khaleesi?"
He asked as soon as he paid attention to her white T-shirt, adorned with a huge red dragon.
Delilah glanced at him with icy cold gesture.
"Khaleesi is the wife of Khal. He is Dothraki leader. And she's the mother of dragons, Daenerys of The Storm"
"Oh, I know"
"You know nothing, Derek Morgan"
He frowned. Although Delilah was right. He knew absolutely nothing about that show let alone the books. He'd only heard about such story from Spencer Reid. And of course, it did not seem like a show suitable for all ages.
"Are not you too young for that kind of thing?"
She turned to look at him, her eyes fixed on his. She smiled, but that wasn't a sweet smile like Candy's. That was a somewhat sarcastic, almost mocking smile. So identical to his own.
"Are not you too old for be a single man?"
