Shinigami-cat: Hey everyone. This is the last chapter. The final bit, the thing that ties up all the loose ends and stuff. I would like to thank skittlethrower for helping me come up with this ending. Without her help this ending would have become very sad and depressing… I OWN NOTHING!

Patience Pays off

It had been a while since Gilbert had visited Lovino. Since their last encounter at the graveyard all those years ago. Things had really changed since then for the Oracle. He had moved into his own place, one of those creepy cabin in the wood deals. One of those ones that appear at the setting in a horror movie.

This was good though, it meant that humans wouldn't come near it, leaving it a perfect place for the supernatural to visit without fear of human interruption. For the first time since Lovino had moved there, Gilbert decided to pay him a visit.

Entering the small cabin he was greeted by a small calf with a patchy hair colour pattern. Patches of chocolate brown and a lighter caramel colour covered the cow. The little animal looked up at Gilbert and mooed excitedly, jumping up and down.

"… Um… Can I talk to the Oracle?" Asked Gilbert in confusion. He had no idea why there was a calf in the cabin.

Something fell to the floor in the cabin, making both the calf and Gilbert jump a little. After a few seconds Antonio appeared in his human form and easily picked up the calf. "Emma, what have I told you about opening the door?"

Emma, the calf, mooed softly and wiggled out of Antonio's arms, quickly trotting off to another part of the cabin. Moments later she reappeared, this time though she looked like a little girl in a pretty green dress. She couldn't have been more then three.

"Sorry papa…" She muttered sheepishly. "I was just excited to see the angel…"

Antonio chuckled and picked her up, kissing her cheek. "It's okay love. I know you were excited. How about you go find your brothers and sisters? I think they are out grazing in the fields." Emma nodded and quickly ran out the back door into the fields.

"… You have kids now?" Asked Gilbert.

Antonio grinned and nodded excitedly. "Si, I do. Those elves work wonders with their potions."

"So… they are yours and… Lovino's?"

"Si."

"… Well I'm happy for you. How many do you have?"

Antonio counted on his fingers. "Let's see… there's Emma, Sophia, Sara, Maria, Alberto, Andres and Leon. So seven."

"That's quite a few." Muttered Gilbert. " So, Lovino knew I would be coming by today?"

"Si, he did. He's down stairs." Antonio. He happily lead the angel down to the basement. The strong smell of incense and burning was billowing out from in there. It made Gilbert's nose itch.

It didn't look to crazy down there. It looked just like ant normal room with just a few little odd bits and pieces on a bookshelf at the back; come crystals, bones and books. Sitting at a table in the middle of the room was Lovino. He still looked as scaly as ever.

Frowning a little, Gilbert sat down across from him. "You've done well for yourself."

"What can I say? I knew what was coming." Said Lovino. He glanced up at Antonio. "Leon and Andres are about to beat the crap out of each other again."

"Okay, see you guys later then." Antonio quickly took his leave to check on the kids.

Once he was gone, Gilbert decided to engage in a little bit of a friendly chat with the Oracle. "So… You ended up with Antonio and have seven kids?"

"What can I say? Antonio's a good guy… And I've liked him for a long time."

The angel nodded a little. "Yeah… Have you seen Francis in all your years?"

"Si, seems like he's very fond of some fire sprite." Muttered Lovino. He drummed his claws against the table top in annoyance. "Almost burnt the fucking house down last time she came over…"

The thought of Lovino's house getting burnt down made Gilbert smile a little. "Yeah… Your brother's doing pretty well as a vampire these days. Saw him the other week. He's finally gotten used to flying and controlling his bloodlust."

"And despite my best efforts him and that fucking douche you call a brother are going to end up together in about a decade."

"I don't see how that's so bad." Whined Gilbert. "You'll be the son in law to Satan himself."

"Yeah…"

"Whatever happened to that dog? Kuma?"

"I kept him for a bit for Matthew." Said Lovino. "Oh and just so you know, you made that fucking thing immortal too when you used magic on it to make it talk. The kids play with him a lot. He's pretty happy here."

"I see…"

Lovino sighed a little and ran his claws through his messy hair. "Why are you really here Gilbert? It obviously isn't for small talk. Bastard."

"Four hundred and sixty seven years." Said Gilbert. "Four hundred and sixty seven years Lovino. You said his soul would be back in circulation after a hundred and I still haven't found him."

"What the hell would you do if you found him right on the day he came back?" Asked Lovino. "Would you be some super fucking creepy guardian angel or some bullshit like that? You have to give it time."

The angel rolled his eyes and flicks his wings in annoyance. "I need more then a fucking time frame. I need to know where he is… Or are you just going to be a vague mother fucker like last time?"

"The fuck do you think?" Snapped Lovino. He closed his eyes a little and concentrated. "… Go and fly over Auyuittuq for a few hours. Auyuittuq is a nature reserve in Canada I think…"

Gilbert stared at Lovino like he had sprouted several extra heads and maybe some tentacles. "You have any idea how fucking big that area is? It's like… nineteen thousand square kilometres! Seven thousand square miles!"

"Your point being?"

"I fucking hate you!"

"Yeah, yeah. Shut the fuck up and get going already."

"I hope you aren't this rude to all your customers!"

"Only to you, you half demon jerk off."

In the end, Gilbert did end up going to Auyuittuq. He wasn't very happy about it though. For one just getting up there was unbelievably windy and had almost blown him all the way to Mexico. Secondly when he actually got there , a huge thunder storm was quickly forming above him.

'I foresee Lovino getting kicked in the face if this turns into some wild goose chase… I'll also turn him into a handbag.'

Beneath the angel was a vast array of trees. Hundreds and hundreds of trees. He was getting really sick of all that green and the occasional blue of a lake. There was a ridiculous amount of lakes this place had.

As he flew along he felt a rumble resinate through his body. Confused, the angel stopped for a second and looked around to see what might have caused it. He saw a flash of lightning off in the distance. Several flashes in fact.

"Fuck…"

Lightning wasn't something Gilbert was very fond of while flying. Getting hit wouldn't kill him, but it would sting, cause spasms and sometimes set his wings on fire.

The angel was about to quickly dive down to the ground when lightning struck him. A flash or red danced behind his eyes before coming back into dizzying focus. He didn't have time to orientate himself so he ended up crashing through and bouncing off several branches before landing in a mangled heap on a low hanging branch.

Before he passed out completely he managed to mumble one thing out. "Note to self… Turn Lovino into a snake skin purse…"

After what seemed like seconds, but was most likely hours, Gilbert slowly opened his eyes and had a look around. He wasn't in the tree anymore. This time he was on the ground and his wounds were dressed. Highly suspicious. He quickly looked around to see if there was someone there but there wasn't. He was just alone. No signs of any other life being there at all.

Deciding on a different approach, Gilbert inspected what he had been fixed up with. Most of it looked very organic, mostly moss of some kind tied to his injured areas by thin strips of tree bark.

He undid the bark bandage on his arm and peeled off the moss. It had a bit of something brown and sticky smeared down the middle of it. Cautiously, he sniffed the substance. It smelt sweet and familiar. He licked it.

"Maple syrup…" He looked up at the tree he landed in, frowning a little. It was a maple tree. Maybe it was because he might have had a concussion, but this tree seemed odd somehow. "Hey? Is someone there?" He ran his fingers across the bark, humming a little. "Come on out, I just want to thank you for your help." He noted that the leaves rustled when there was no wind. This tree was ticklish.

Gilbert grinned and continued his assault on the tree until eventually something fell out on the tree and next to him. It looked like some kind of earth fae. At least that's what Gilbert thought by looking at his clothes. Every article seemed to be made from some kind of organic material. That and he had all manner of twigs sticking out of his hair.

The fae continued to giggle as he sat up, rubbing his sides. He sheepishly tucked some of his autumn yellow hair behind his ear. "S-sorry I hid from you… I'm not used to catching flying beings in my branches."

"… You actually caught me?" Asked Gilbert. "I didn't just get turned into a pinball?"

The fae looked up at him, smiling. "Well you slipped out of my grasp a few times but I caught you in the end. I did my best to make you better too."

Gilbert noted that this fae had the most stunning lilac eyes he had ever seen. They looked so much like Matthew's eyes. In fact, there were a few things that this fae shared in common Matthew. They had the same build, similar facial features and he was sure they shared other similar traits.

"So… You saved my life." Said Gilbert slowly.

"Yeah, I guess so…" Said the fae.

A smile crept across Gilbert's face. "Well then, we should introduce ourselves, shouldn't we?"

The fae nodded in agreement. "Yeah, my name is Matthew. I'm an earth fae and guardian of Auyuittuq ."

"My name is Gilbert. I am a half angel and I am here to grant you a wish in exchange for saving my life."

"Eh?"

The more time Gilbert spent with the fae, the more Gilbert realized that he was exactly like Matthew but with a few obvious changes. For one, this Matthew was way more in tune with the plants and animals. He also got had the normal fae magic powers.

The pair spent most of their time talking to each other about their lives. Matthew talked mostly about the trees, rivers and animals he had encountered. Gilbert talked about his long, long, stupidly long life and all the dumb things he did. Eventually though, he ended up telling him about Matthew, the human Matthew.

The fae listened intently to every word Gilbert said and when he was done, all he did was smile and nod. "As odd as it sounds, I believe you Gilbert."

"Seriously?" Asked the angel in disbelief. He thought he'd have to do much more convincing then that.

Matthew giggled a little and nodded. "Yep. My kind believes heavily in the cycle of life, death and rebirth. To me it is totally plausible if not completely true that I am your Matthew… I just don't have any of his memories because I'm not a perfect copy of him."

"No one could be a perfect copy of him." Said Gilbert. "If you were a perfect copy you'd get sick and die…"

Matthew smiled a little. "Hey, that's not going to happen to me... At least as long as the reserve stays healthy and my birth tree stays standing…"

"Birth tree?"

Matthew nodded. "Yeah, the tree we're sitting under. When this tree first sprouted my existence began some four hundred and sixty seven years ago."

"What happened to the last guardian of Auyuittuq?" Asked Gilbert.

"That's a sad and sudden story…" Said Matthew quietly. "The last guardian stood for thousands of years but their birth tree was struck down by lightning. It was a sad time, but because of that I was able to exist as I am."

"And I'm thankful for that." Said the angel with a small smile. "So you accept my feelings towards you?"

"Yes, I do." Said Matthew. "But you have to understand, I am not the Matthew you knew and loved. I'm different."

"I know that. I fell in love with Matthew because of his soul." Said Gilbert. "Yeah, he had a nice body too but looks mean nothing if your personality doesn't reflect what's on the outside. As long as your soul is beautiful you will stay beautiful. I love you Matthew. I'm going to stay with you because as far as I'm concerned that is my destiny and eventually when you pass on I'll follow you into Heaven or Hell. I'll even wait for you to come back again and again if your soul needs to come back to this world again."

Matthew was deeply touched by the angel's honest feelings. He smiled softly and kissed his cheek. "Then I have made my wish. I want you to stay with me and guard my birth tree until it can no longer support life."

Gilbert grinned and kissed the fae. "I think I can manage that."
