Mako toyed with the frayed edges of his scarf as he poked his head through the crack in the door. Korra was lying on her stomach, not even dressed for bed yet. Her hair was arranged in a tangled halo around her face. Her shirt was riding up, revealing the smooth skin of her lower back. She was exhausted from constant council meetings at City Hall, but she still looked beautiful. Korra was the kind of beautiful that you could never get tired of. Mako could have stood in the doorway looking at her forever, but he remembered that he was here for something.
He wrapped the loose thread hanging from the edge of his scarf around his finger, and pulled. It broke off, leaving him with a couple of inches of red string. He snuck into their bedroom, wincing as the door squeaked on his rusty hinges. He would fix that later. Korra rolled over onto her side at the noise, but her eyes remained closed. Mako crept to the side of the bed that Korra was nearest to. He knelt, reaching for her hand. Her fingers were splayed on the sheets, like she was reaching for something in her dreams. Mako took her hand, thanking the spirits that she as a deep sleeper. He found her ring finger and wrapped the length of string around it, loosening it slightly. He marked the circumference of her finger and bit it off where it ended. Korra began to stir just then, her eyelids fluttering open.
"Mako?" She murmured, her eyes filled with sleep. "What are you doing?"
Mako leaned in and kissed her forehead. "Nothing. Go back to sleep." Her fingers found his and she squeezed lightly for a second before lapsing into slumber again.
Mako released the breath he'd been holding in his chest as he untangled their intertwined fingers gently. He stood up and left the room, taking care to close the door. Now that he had her ring size, there was only one more thing to do. Mako threw on his coat and headed to the jewelry store down the street. A couple of years ago, he wouldn't have been able to even imagine buying anything from a store that expensive, but things were different now. He had a stable job as a policeman and a nice apartment, which was all he ever really wanted.
But now, standing outside of the jewelry store, he wanted something else. He wanted Korra, for the rest of their lives together. He wanted to wake up next to her every morning. He wanted a thousand more memories with her. He wanted to see her smile as she walked towards him down the the aisle.
Mako grinned to himself as he pushed open the door to the store, imagining his ring on her finger.
