...Hey there.

After being gone for three plus years, I had to reread my story to figure out where I was. It was only by doing this did I realize how crappy the first handful of chapters are and now, I have decided to reboot this story.

Not only will I give this a major wax job, I am also going to edit the storyline. I have done a lot of maturing since this concept was developed at the ripe age of 13. I hope that it will show and that this will be much more enjoyable to read.

Thank you everyone for your continuous support. These last six years have been difficult and I haven't been able to pursue what I love. Just know that I have read every review you all have sent me and that I cherish them more than anything else on here.

As stated in the original, I only own the storyline and my OC Madilynn. The song lyrics and characters belong to their rightful owners and I am using them solely for nonprofit creativity.

So, without further comments, here is the reboot for What Just Happened?

What Just Happened?

Chapter 1: Maka's Interrogation

Maka Albarn wipes her sweaty palms onto her black skinny jeans. (You would think that after how many interviews she has gone through that she would be used to them by now.) I give her a reassuring smile and she smiles charmingly back at me.

Here goes nothing. "Good afternoon! If you're looking for answers concerning musical icons, you've come to the right place! My name is Cookie and In The Spotlight is proud to announce that we have a series of interviews, which we call 'interrogations'. Our suspects are the bandmates that make up the alternative sensation Resonance! Up first, we've got Maka Albarn! Welcome aboard, Maka!"

"Thanks for having me."

"Of course! So, the way this works is that we want to get your story through a series of questions. Ready for an interrogation?" I ask, goodnaturedly.

"Fire away!" she states with a grin.

"First question," I shuffle my index cards for no reason at all. "Did you ever see yourself becoming one of the nation's biggest music sensations?"

Maka narrows her eyes with thought. "No, not at all. I don't think that anyone who gets to this point in their career truly believes at the beginning that they'll become big. They just hope that they can get up there. There's only one in a million chance that anyone makes it in this industry, you know? "

"Well, it seems that you're among them," I state with a smile.

"It's been a wild ride," Maka says with a giggle. "Especially with a group as crazy as Resonance."

"Speaking of Resonance, how's the gang?"

"Still insane and up for adventure. I don't know if there will ever be a day when they aren't nuts." Maka shakes her head and I laugh, getting the audience to laugh as well.

"How are your standings with each member of Resonance?"

"Tsubaki is the sweetest being to ever walk the earth. She's my source of encouragement. Liz is so down to earth and always has something to say. I love talking things out with her. Patty is crazy and is always someone to go to for a good laugh. Kid is as OCD as ever, but he does keep us organized. Plus, he's so sweet on Liz that it's disgusting." Maka states with a wink. The crowd loves it.

"Black Star is...well, Black Star. I'm not sure how to describe him."

"Eccentric?" I offer, to which she nods.

"You could definitely describe him that way. He's not afraid to own who he is, and I really respect that." She finishes.

"I believe you left out a crucial piece of this ensemble…" I give her a pointed look, and she squirms in her seat. The fact that she turns pink in the face makes the crowd go nuts with hoots and different cries of "tell us the dirt!".

Maka clasps her hands and places them on her lap. "Soul's a great person to have around because he is so chill. If you're looking for a place to get away from the stresses of life, Soul's always up to just hang out."

I look at my nails. "I'm sure you and Soul hang out a lot."

Maka narrows her eyes at me good naturedly. "Not. One. Word."

"Alright, alright! Sheesh, touchy much?" I raise up my hands in defense.

"Just a tad." Maka fires back. "Next question."

I look into the camera. "We are now taking some questions from the audience. Tweet inthespotlight with the hashtag #interrogatingmakaalbarn to have a chance for your question being asked here on In the Spotlight. Stay tuned, we'll be back right after the break!"

It feels as if a break never happened. Almost immediately, we are back on air. "And we're back! From the looks of it, we have some fantastic questions. The first one is from resonatewithme, who asks, 'How did Resonance find you, and what was life like before them?'"

Maka gives a laugh. "Funny that you asked. What happened was…"

~WhatJustHappened?~

"Turn that damn thing off!"

An annoying, nasally, voice through the wall wakes Maka up from her slumber. Her alarm is going off, and there's no doubt in her mind that it is annoying her father's new toy. She is tempted to let it keep ringing, but soon it starts to grate on her nerves, as well.

Slamming her palm on the blaring clock, a yawn escapes her lips. Her eyes are still heavy from her spontaneous late night study session. She's dead tired from studying until two in the morning, only to wake up four and a half hours later. Usually, she is a stickler for a steady sleep schedule; however, this test is going to be a big one and she has to be ready for it.

Slowly, Maka forces her sluggish body to move out of bed. She is victorious in her endeavour to reach the dresser, only to stub her pinky toe on said dresser. After a canon of choice words, she stretches to her full height, which isn't that tall to begin with.

Pulling out a faded red tee and ripped black jeans, Maka grabs her Chuck Taylors from beside her dresser with a pair of socks that smell clean. She narrowly avoids the doorframe on her way out of her room as she heads to the bathroom down the hall.

The bright lights blind her sensitive eyes, leaving temporary black spots in her vision. She turns on the faucet to the shower and only registers that it's cold when she is jolted awake by chills and gooseflesh on her entire body. Frantically, she turns up the heat, albeit a bit too much. One side of her body is Antarctica while the other is the Sahara Desert.

Emerging from the bathroom, further traumatized, Maka grabs an apple from the bowl sitting on the table and her backpack, making a million mental notes of everything she has to get done that day and the nap she wishes that she had time for.

Maka freezes halfway out of the door, realizing she almost left behind articles imperative to survival. Grabbing her phone and iPod from their respective docks, she slips on her black Paramore hoodie before heading to the bus stop, music blaring in her ears and the cool autumn breeze nipping at her nose.

There's only one new message and it is from her best friend, Madilynn.

To: Maka

From: Madi

Guess what? Resonance is here in Death City! XD Can you believe it?! ERMEGERD what if we meet them? I'll be able to see Soul for myself! XD JK

But seriously tho.

Maka rolls her eyes with a quiet laugh. Madilynn is obsessed with Soul 'Eater' Evans, the current lead singer/pianist of Resonance. The probability that Madilynn will insert him into any conversation is a solid chance to bet on.

Yeah, Soul Evans is hot. He's an icon; he would have to be attractive to the majority of the fanbase. Her opinion? He seems a bit arrogant and hot headed. Every interview that Madi made her watch showed intense cockiness and he just exudes egotism. He's got an amazing voice live and he is a very talented pianist; however, he also has these freaky red eyes and his teeth are unnaturally pointed at the tips. He gives her a strange vibe. It's not that looks matter to Maka; physical appearance grows on her over time after getting to know a person. It's the fact that he considers himself better than everyone else that ticks her off and makes him her least favorite person in the whole group. All of the others seem realistic, but he seems as if he is trying to be cool. That doesn't fly with her.

While sending a reply, Maka slams into something hard. After falling onto her butt, she lets out a grunt. "Ow…"

All she sees when she looks up is a guy in a black hoodie with his hood up and shades on. He extends a hand to help her up. Taking it, she is lifted up as if she weighs nothing.

She is about to thank him; however, when he says "Watch where you're going, Tiny-Tits." with a growl that is oddly familiar, she immediately sees red and grits her teeth. "Didn't your mother teach you not to call people names?"

"Didn't yours teach you to pay attention?"

"She would've if she was around. Go to hell, would ya?"

"Only if you'll be there."

"Do you pride yourself on being an ass?"

"Sometimes. Just watch where you're going, alright?"

"No promises, but I'll do my best." Maka spits out before turning abruptly and heading to the bus stop, leaving fire in her wake.

She's in a bad mood as she gets on the bus and slides onto the bench next to Madilynn.

Madilynn gives her a face. "What's with the 'tude, my dude?"

Maka lets out a sharp sigh. "People are just so rude, you know? What has happened to common courtesy?"

Madilynn makes a face. "It evaporated with all of the tall people. Did you get my text?"

Maka puts her bag in between her legs. "Yeah. I'm guessing you want to-" She searches her pockets for her phone, but ends up empty handed. She thinks about where it could possibly be, seeing as she just had it moments ago, when she stiffens with a thought. It was in her back pocket, and now it's gone. When she fell, it probably came out of her pocket onto the pavement. And that means...

"Shit!" Maka exclaims, slamming her back against the worn leather seats, causing the people behind her to jump in shock. Madilynn looks at her skeptically. "What's wrong?"

Maka slams a hand on her forehead, an act otherwise known as facepalming. "It's with the weirdo!"

Madilynn just looks at her like she's crazy. "You need to start making sense. What weirdo?"

Maka explains the whole situation to her best friend, who then giggles excitedly. "Oh! A mysterious guy! This could be A Cinderella Story. You know, the one with Hillary Duff?"

Maka gives a snort. "Yeah. He somehow finds me, gives me my phone back, then he brutally murders me. Happily ever after."

Madilynn grimaces. "Why are you always turn things into a horror movie?"

Maka waves the question aside. "The point is that there isn't a passcode on it and it is full of sensitive information, Madi. I need to get it back."

Her best friend just shrugs. "Well, there's nothing you can do about it at this moment." Maka slumps in her seat. Madilynn puts her arm around Maka. "Cheer up. We'll find it, don't you fret!"

When the bus rolls to a stop, they make their way off of it and up the stairs into the Shibusen Academy.

Madilynn nudges Maka gently with her shoulder. "He could be cute! Sure, not Soul Evans cute, but cute all the same!"

Maka stops walking and stares at her. "Did you not hear me? He was wearing a hoodie and sunglasses. Sunglasses when it's cloudy outside! Like, he gave me the vibe of being super shady. No thanks."

Madilynn starts to ramble and Maka lets out a very audible sigh. "Can we please just drop it?"

They didn't share the same first period, and so they parted ways when they reached the hall entrance. Maka has Honors English II and Madilynn has Algebra II.

The worst part about this school year is that they only share two out of eight class periods; however, they do have the same lunch, so it kind of makes up for it. Not completely, though.

Once Maka takes her seat in the front of the class, she pulls out her essay that was quickly written the previous night and lays it neatly on her desk, only to pick up her book to read while she waits for their teacher, Ms. Marie, to arrive.

Maka is a nerd, yes, but she is highly respected. She's pretty enough, even though she doesn't have gigantic breasts or a huge butt. Even though she doesn't wear super feminine clothing, she has petite curves and long legs that guys oogle at. She gets asked out by the quarterback all the time, but always rejects him. She doesn't have time for guys who don't know the difference between you're and your.

Maka's getting to a great part of the story when a ball of paper hits her in the back of the head. Intending to be the bigger person, she ignores it.

After a couple more hit her, she turns around in her seat only to see her two favorite people, lovingly nicknamed Arachne and Medusa. They hold more paper balls in their hands with demented smiles painted on their masks made out of overly priced makeup.

Closing her book, Maka puts on a mask of her own. Feigning a polite expression, she asks, "Can I help you?"

Arachne laughs. "Actually, yes. Would you stop breathing, please? You're taking up all of my air."

Maka stares at her evenly, not fazed in the slightest. "If you need air that badly, stop polluting it with the gallons of hairspray you use everyday for your hair. If that doesn't work, try wearing less makeup. It opens the pores. Or, you can stop killing trees by making paper balls."

Only when they have nothing else to say does Maka turn away with a smile, the glares from the duo going unnoticed as the oooh's of the class become a symphony in her ears. Maka goes back to her book, still waiting for Ms. Marie.

~WhatJustHappened?~

Madilynn laughs extremely hard when Maka tells her what she said to the Witch Sisters as they sit in Applied Music class.

"It's true though! They need to lay off the hairspray."

Maka nods and strums an electric guitar that was leaning against the wall. Their teacher never actually taught them anything in the class, so it's sort of a free period.

"So, I wrote a song the other day..." Maka tells Madilynn, who's playing game on Maka's iPod.

"Let's hear it." Madilynn says immediately.

Maka blushes slightly and strums some chords. "It's still in the works, but here's what I have." She hums a bit, thinking of her lyrics and matching her voice to the pitch she needs. After strumming a few chords, she starts to sing.

That's What You Get by Paramore

No, sir, well I don't wanna be the blame, not anymore

It's your turn, so take a seat we're settling the final score

And why do we like to hurt so much?

I can't decide

You have made it harder just to go on

And why, all the possibilities, well I was wrong.

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

I drowned out all my sense with the sound of its beating

And that's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa.

I wonder, how am I supposed to feel when you're not here

Cause I burned every bridge I ever built when you were here

I still try holding onto silly things, I never learn

Oh why, all the possibilities, I'm sure you've heard.

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

I drowned out all my sense with the sound of its beating

And that's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa.

Pain make your way to me, to me

And I'll always be just so inviting

If I ever start to think straight

This heart will start a riot in me

Let's start, start, hey!

Why do we like to hurt so much?

Oh why do we like to hurt so much?

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

That's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa

Now I can't trust myself with anything but this

And that's what you get when you let your heart win, whoa.

As the last chord rings out, the small class claps enthusiastically her face turns beet red. Madilynn beams at her and gives her two thumbs up. "You're amazing, you know that?"

Maka's blush takes on a darker shade as she shakes her head. "Not really; it's not that complicated. Anyone could do it…"

Madilynn glares at her. "Will you just take a freaking compliment? Not everyone can do that, okay? Be proud of your work, if not for you then for me."

People are starting to come up to her to compliment her song when she is literally saved by the bell. Sending up a prayer of thanks, she runs out of the music room and heads to her locker. She's thinking about improvements that she can make to That's What You Get when she notices from a distance that her locker is cracked open. She knows for sure that she closed it all of the way and panic starts to parkour up her throat.

When she opens it all of the way, she sees her phone laying on its back in the middle of her locker. It is still warm from somebody's hand. Frantically, she scrolls through her phone to see that all of the sensitive information is still in tact. For some reason, her pictures are open, along with her contacts app. No new pictures have been added, but while scrolling through her contacts, she notices that there is a new one added into the list.

The name she sees almost makes her phone slip from her hand.

It says Soul Eater Evans.
