Chapter 14

Annie's POV

"Whose baby did you think it was?"

His face is pale and he sits on the couch. "No. No. No."

"Finnick…"

"But I thought that- I just," he trails off but soon more words start spilling out of his mouth. "I don't understand. I should have known. No wonder she didn't want to tell me. I wish I didn't know-"

"You wish you didn't," I trail off.

He sits there with his head in his hands. Suddenly he stands up violently and rushes out of the kitchen. I hear him running up the stairs.

"The baby is sleeping!" I call.

Within the next thirty seconds he's running back down the stairs and away from me.

"Finnick!" I shout, "Finnick!" I catch up to him at the door and slide in front of it.

"Annie, move."

"Finn, where are you going?"

He shakes his head and gently slides me out of the way. I hear the door shut behind him and I sink to the ground, sobbing.

Baby Finn's cries echo through the house. I put down my pen and sigh. Another day alone. I stand up and move away from my desk towards his crib.

"Shhhh, shhhh," I bounce him, "I'm sorry, Finn. I'm so so sorry."

Peeta's POV

I pull a shirt over my head and look at what time it is.

"I'm late," I mumble, "I hope Annie doesn't mind." I grab my jacket and sprint to the door. I'm excited to see Annie, it'll be nice to have some human companionship. Katniss has been ignoring me.

I don't think it's about me. It's about Finnick. Things were misunderstood, feelings were torn apart. She needs some space to figure things out. If anyone can work through this it's Katniss. Annie may need some help, though.

I walk up the steps to the front door and knock. No answer. I wait thirty seconds and knock again. No answer again. I look down at my watch; it's 8 o'clock sharp. I shuffle my feet in discomfort and knock again. No answer. I look around and pull a key from my pocket, put it into the lock, and jiggle it around until the door unlocks. The door slowly glides open.

"Hello," I call, "Annie?"

The living room is dark and I uneasily step in. A lamp is on the floor and, surprisingly, Finn's crib is in the middle of the room. I cross over and lean to see inside. Finn is staring at the ceiling with his tongue out. He looks at me and grins in excitement.

"Hey, buddy! Where's mama?" I exclaim. He giggles in response and throws his hands over his eyes.

I start searching in every corner, every room, every cabinet. No Annie. I hastily pull out my phone and dial Katniss and I's house.

Katniss' POV

Thank God. I was beginning to think he would never leave. When he is a decent distance away I rush into our house. The faint smell of freshly baked bread floats in the air from the morning. I go searching and get a plate of food. I start eating and the taste dances across my taste buds. Peeta sure knows how to bake. The taste brings me back. I think about sitting in the rain, waiting to die. My mother was in a hopeless state and showed no signs of improvement. He threw me bread and saved my life. Saved my family's life. I think about the Victory tour. The Capital usually fed us but he baked bread one day, tried to forget about what the Victory tour represented. It was warm and just as good, if not better, than the Capital food. I close my eyes and let the memories envelope me.

"I miss this," I whisper.

The phone rings and I jump. No one calls us. I continue stuffing my face and ignore the incessant noise.

"Hey, Kat," I freeze, it's Peeta's voice. "I don't know if you're there but I really hope you are. You see, we need to get in touch with Finnick but I'm not sure how to find him." He continues on, sounding strained, "Could you find him? I'm with the baby right now," he sighs. "It's about Annie; she seems to be gone."

I scramble toward the phone and pick it up, "What do you mean gone?"

"I don't really know. She told me to show up, I did. She isn't here."

"Well where is she?"

"I don't know."

Panic flickers inside of me, "Why not?"

"I came fully expecting her to be here, Katniss. Don't act like I should know all the answers. Maybe Finnick can help. Can you find him?"

My heart pounds. "I might be able to."

"You are Katniss freaking Everdeen. I wasn't asking if you could, I was asking if you would."

No. "Yes."

"Okay, I'll watch Finn and tell you if she turns up."

"Okay, bye."

"Bye, Katniss," he hangs up.

I scream. Tears roll down my face and I lose my breath, "why did you say yes, idiot?"
