So yesterday I posted my first one-shot in the Danny Phantom fandom. I've been working on these pieces for a while and have finally gotten some courage to post these. However, I don't know if they will stay one-shots or if I will continue this into an actual story. Maybe if enough people like it, I'll find the motivation in me to dig deeper into the chaos that is my brain and come up with a full story. For now, please enjoy a simple one-shot about Danielle and Danny having a father/daughter relationship of sorts.
Danny sat in his fourth period class, completely zoned out. Sam and Tucker had been watching him carefully the entire twenty minutes of class, completely missing the notes they were supposed to be taking. In all honesty, they've been watching him intently for much longer now. He had been zoning out all week as if something was bothering him, but whenever the two asked, he deflected their questions expertly, refusing to speak what about what was eating away at him. It was even worse for Sam, Danny had blocked their link.
The link had formed between the two teens when they were younger. Another freak accident in the Fenton Lab involving a device meant to melt a ghost into ectoplasmic goo with the right frequency and wavelengths. Instead it connect Sam and Danny's minds to one another. At first the link allowed them to have access to the other's emotions and thoughts on one of the least invasive levels possible unless they were in danger, but after Danny's accident turning him into a halfa, the link has been growing stronger.
But so had they. They now knew how to block each other out almost completely unless they had extremely strong emotions. Danny, who had learned to rein his emotions in quite a while ago, was stronger at blocking Sam from his emotions and Sam's emotions from him. Sam wasn't so lucky and had a harder time hiding her emotions from the raven-haired boy, even though he tried to give her the most privacy a teenaged-boy could give a teenaged-girl that he was psychically linked to.
"Daniel!" Mr. Lancer called out loudly, breaking the young, blue-eyed teen out of his pitiful trance.
"What?" He snapped harshly, eyes alert once again. Sam bit her lips nervously as he glanced around as if he was waiting for something to jump out at him and attack. And she guessed he had every reason to believe that would happen with what his job was. He was always paranoid and nervous now, the threat of ghost attacks never leaving his mind. They were all a bit like that now, conditioned to be ready for anything and to be prepared to think on their feet and never banish any idea prematurely for it could actually be the one to save your life at the end of the day.
But all week Danny has either been even more alert than usual or completely and utterly zoned out. It was during these moments, and every now and again when he was sleeping, that Sam could feel the link open up a bit before he would slam his barriers right back up, signifying he felt her probing around.
From what she had been able to detect, it reeked of pain, loneliness and a sense of longing so strong, Sam had been stopped dead in her tracked more than once. But what could he be missing so much? At first Sam thought it could have been something to do with one of his many hopeless crushes. Danny had a horrible habit of falling in love way too quickly, just to find that there was no one at the bottom of the fall to catch him. He always fell too fast, too hard, and always, always, got hurt in the end.
But then, she felt something odd about these. It didn't feel romantic in the least, but she couldn't figure out what it could be. The feeling felt familiar to her, but she couldn't place where she's felt these emotions from him before.
"Now that you aren't daydreaming anymore, would you care to participate in the class discussion by answering the question?" Mr. Lancer jeered unwillingly. He, too, had noticed Danny was distracted more than usual. Usually he would try to pay attention as much as possible before conking out or running out of the class to 'use the restroom', but now he barely even wrote a word down. He knew trying to embarrass Danny in front of the class to try and get him to pay more attention in the future wouldn't work, for he's tried it on several occasions, but he didn't have any other cards to play just yet.
He had always prided himself with having enough techniques up his sleeve to crack even the most troubled student believe that, after thirty-three years of teaching, he'd had every kind of teenage problem solved that Danny wouldn't take too much effort or trouble.
Boy was he wrong.
Danny was a complete enigma to the older English teacher and hoped one day that he could actually get the boy to open up to him and talk about whatever was his problem. The boy worried Lancer non-stop and even talking to his wife, a therapist, did little to no good when trying to figure out Danny.
He would just have to wait, listen, and observe if he was ever to get to the bottom of his and his friends' secret.
"And what exactly was the question, Mr. Lancer?" Most of the class 'oohed' at his 'brave act', but Danny was just too distracted to put more consideration in how he spoke to his authority figure. Lancer frowned as Sam scowled and kicked the back of Danny's chair causing the teen to blink his doe-eyes and look up at Lancer, his eyes a bit more focused.
Tucker just groaned silently. If it wasn't for his ghost sense, Danny would have creamed at the beginning of this week by any ghost that decided to attack. Hell, even the box ghost had gotten a few decent hits on the infamous Danny Phantom.
"Why do you think the curtains were described as being a deep satin blue? What do you think the author was trying to tell us?" Danny groaned before slumping over his desk and messing with the silver band on his right hand. It had been a gift from Sam after he gave her a necklace and it was the only piece of jewelry Danny dared to wear. It was just in case someone made the connection between Fenton's accessories and Phantom's, though most would probably just assume Fenton was trying to copy Phantom.
"I have no clue Mr. Lancer. Maybe it was the reflection of his or the main character's mood at the moment—sad, depressed, sullen, somber, etc.—or maybe the color reminded him of a lost love, or even of the love had at the moment. Or it could have been just because he liked the color. I don't know, though, because I didn't have the chance to read the short story you assigned to us." Sam and Tucker winced. Even though he gave out good reasons, Lancer was looking for a specific one and would definitely appreciate Danny's attitude.
"Excuse you?" Mr. Lancer hissed, slamming his book down angrily. He looked affronted by the boy's attitude. "What in blazes has gotten into you, Mr. Fenton?" Everyone was silently waiting for Danny's answer. He was too distracted. Peopled around the entire room winced as Danny snapped his head towards the window with wide eyes, his neck cracking several loud times in the process. He was up in an instant throwing his book bag at his friends, only one word slipping past his lips before he was out the door.
"Danielle!"
Everyone was left in a silent stupor. Even his friends were shocked at his sudden outburst. Danny was never one to actually break the rules—at least not so blatantly at least—and that he just took off like that was bewildering. It was almost five entire minutes without noise before the television flashed on, startling the entire class. It was the news. The school had recently programed the televisions around the school to turn on whenever there was news about a ghost attack, so they knew if they were to evacuate the children or hide them.
Sam was the first to make noise. A gasp rang out from Sam before she screeched at Tucker, amethyst eyes wide in horror.
"He'll kill them Tucker!" She and Tucker bolted from the room, leaving the class completely clueless as to what was happening as they watched the Guys in White try and capture… a female version of… Phantom?
O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O.o.O. o.O.o.O.o.O.o.
Danielle howled when the Guys in White repeatedly shot at her with their ray guns, her tangled lunar locks flying roughly in the wind, her green scrunchy long-since missing in the battle. Her radioactive green eyes continued to flick back in fear as she tried desperately to figure out what to do.
"What did I do to make you come after me?" She cried as one of the rays sliced at her shoulder painfully. She needed to get to Danny, he'd help her! He always protected her and always knew what to do in these situations. She had no clue, though, what to do and so being on her own at the moment wasn't going to help her save herself.
The news watched in curious horror as the Guys in White took another shot at the tiny girl flying around in front of them. They weren't sure if they were supposed to feel sympathy for the small ghost girl or not. She surely wasn't much older than ten and here she was being attacked by the much older men. But they wouldn't attack for just any reason, would that? Sure, she was a ghost, but Danny Phantom proved them all wrong, didn't he?
"You are nothing but ectoplasmic ghost scum!" Agent Z hissed, aiming the gun at her again, but Agent X stopped him. They needed her alive—err, not a pile of useless ectoplasm—so they could experiment on her. She would be no good to them if there was no sentient form left.
Suddenly she screeched to a halt before turning the other way and flying away from Maddie Fenton. Danny's parents were known ghost hunters and she really couldn't have them finding out who or what she is. That could easily lead them to figuring out Danny's secret and she knew she couldn't let the happen no matter what.
"Why are you all so mean to me?" She wailed as more of her energy drained. Why couldn't she be as strong and smart as Danny? He wouldn't have let himself get cornered like this! He would know how to get away from them.
Suddenly, she felt a net wrap around her and knock her out of the sky and hurdling to the ground. Fortunately for her she hadn't been too high in the air and landed on the ground with a dull thud. It didn't stop the tears from forming in her eyes or the gasps that came from the on-lookers.
"Why are you doing this to me?" She begged, tears causing her voice to crack weakly. Everyone was taken aback by the tears and the fear they heard bubbling from her.
Maddie growled angrily. Ghosts couldn't feel anything but anger and obsession, so why is it that this little girl was so convincing? And she thought ghosts couldn't cry! They must be a simple trick of the eye, nothing more than a fake act! But there was something in those eyes that actually made Madeline Fenton, cold-hearted ghost hunter, feel a small twinge of guilt for shooting the ectoplasmic being out of the sky.
"Maddie quickly shook that feeling off. It was ludicrous that this little girl could actually feel anything. She pressed a small blue button on her remote and watched as the ghost girl shook as a small bout of electricity coursed through her, causing a small cry of pain to emit form her lips.
Maddie's grin came back full force, a malicious, maniacal twist to it. If she couldn't torture, interrogate, and dissect the Phantom kid, this was one of the next best things. She looked just like him.
Except she was female and a lot younger looking than him. She didn't seem to have the same power or skills to handle them as Phantom did, either. She didn't have his alleged 'pain tolerance' either. But if her own son could get electrocuted—on accident, of course—by this with only so much as a scream, then she knew this 'child' could handle it.
She was confused, however, when Jack tried it on himself, he had been whipped unconscious for hours.
"You are nothing but ectoplasmic scum that doesn't deserve to be on this planet!" Maddie hissed. For the first time the small ghost girl stared right at the older woman. Maddie's rancor slowly diminished as she stared the little girl in the eyes. Her eyes reminded Maddie of someone she couldn't name at the moment, which confused the woman, for she wasn't used to her memory failing.
Neither did her observation skills. But were those a good as she had believed, she would have noticed the trademark DP emblem stitched onto her jumpsuit.
"No, I'm not! I'm more than that! Please don't hurt me!" She cried several times, begging with her attackers to let her go. How was it that she had managed to hide from everyone for the past few months, but as soon as she's back in Amity Park—bang—she gets attacked by several hunters? One of which were her Fath—No, she couldn't think like that—Danny's parents.
"Too bad, you're coming back with us." Agent Y finally called out, walking up with Agents X and Z as Maddie glared down at the little girl, a plasma aimed right between her eyes. All Danielle could think about was if she could just find Danny, she'd be safe again. She wouldn't have to be as scared as she was now because he would protect her. He always did and always would, right?
No one aware of the media crawling closer to them, trying to get all the footage and audio they could. The ghost hunters and the ghost herself were at a pretty far distance from each other, though. None of the humans wanted to get too close to her until they knew she couldn't hurt them. They were yelling back and forth and the crowd was extremely quiet, so they were able to hear everything. It was pretty easy, though, seeing as they were in the center of the park. It was where they had a large clearing that they held the town gatherings and 'block' parties at. Amity Park was all about community, after all.
And ghosts. Amity Park was all about community and ghosts.
"Any last words before we take you in for several series of painful experiments and tests before dissecting and executing you?" Agent X smirked viciously. He didn't understand why Agents K and O ever had any problems catching the young Phantom of Amity Park, she wasn't so tough to him. Agent Y, though, found it peculiar that everything he'd ever read or heard before said that Phantom was, in fact, a prepubescent boy. Perhaps he could change genders? Agent Y shrugged. They'd figure that out once they got this scum back to the labs. Agent X wasn't kidding when he said he was going to conduct several very painful and very invasive experiments to figure out anything and everything they needed to know about her—his—it's kind.
Danielle wanted to cry in defeat, but she knew that if this got back to Danny he would be upset at her. Or maybe he wouldn't. It wasn't like he should care about her. She was nothing but a clone; an imperfection, abomination. And yet, she couldn't control herself as she opened her mouth and scream a word that surprised even her when she said it.
"DADDY!"
That right there stopped everyone in their tracks. Did that thing just say daddy? That was impossible! Ghosts couldn't have children, it wasn't possible! Ghosts were just the left over spiritual remnants of a person that had unfinished business on earth. Their obsessions to certain things—people, were what kept them on this plane and it was up to people like her, Jack, and agents X,Y, and Z to capture and destroy these beings.
Angered by the little girls' outcry, Agent X snatched the remote that was hanging in Maddie's lax grip. He turned the dial up and pressed it harshly, relishing in the pained scream that was torn from the little brat's lips.
"DADDY!" She cried again as one of the Guys in White electrocuted her. At that moment, she wondered how Danny could have handle this, and worse. Because let's face it, Danny has seen more horrors than men thrice his age should never bear witness to.
Suddenly Maddie and the three agents were shaken to the core when an animalistic howl sounded above them, terrifying even the bravest of men, before a black and white blur came darting down from the sky towards them. The impact of said figure slamming down left a sizable crater at the same moment green-white flames burst in a circle around the hunters and ghosts, keeping the audience at a fair distance from them for fear of getting burned. When the dust of the impact cleared, people were shocked to see who it was.
Maddie gasped when she realized who the black figure was. Amity Park's very own Danny Phantom was crouched in the small crater with his first slammed into the crater and eyes burning as bright as the flames flickering on the ground.
"How. Dare. You." Everyone flinched at the venom in his voice. They had never seen him like this. They had seen him taunt, tease, and play with his opponents. They've seen him upset, angry, tense, guilty, and frazzled. But this this was an emotion they wished they never had the unpleasant surprise of witnessing.
This was pure, undiluted fury. And it was aimed directly at the hunters. Everyone gasped when Phantom stood and suddenly created two of them. One raced towards the younger girl while the other advanced on the hunters, growling in a way that made him sound like an animal.
Agent X lunged for Danny only to be blocked by an ecto shield before being blasted by an ecto blast. He was sent flying backwards onto the ground with a thud, eyes focused on Maddie. An ecto blast shot at Danny, but it bounced off the shield and lasered him as well. Danny continued to stalk towards Maddie, repeatedly shooting at the agents repeatedly, not caring about the serious injuries they received. Maybe that would keep them from daring to touch Danielle ever again.
With shaking hands, Maddie picked up the wayward remote and pressed the blue button again. Phantom paused when he heard a cry from the little girl, making Maddie sag in relief, until Phantom duplicated himself. One of the Phantoms—the original—stayed staring at Maddie as the other one—the duplicate—raced over to Danielle.
Before Maddie could even register what had happened, Phantom was in front of her. He grabbed the remote before pushing the green button and releasing the girl of her ropes and smashing the remote.
Maddie looked around at the three agents for help but realized they were all far too injured to help. She was frozen when he grabbed her and brought her close to his face, her nose centimeters away from his. She felt his cold breath wash over him as he growled, recently-acquired fangs bared. The original Phantom that was holding onto her shirt absorbed the other one before hissing.
"I don't usually cuss." He growled, loud enough for more people to hear.
"But you stay the fuck away from my daughter." His voice was nothing short of a snarl, and more people gasped as the flames grew and he turned to the phantom girl. Everyone watched as the two Phantoms split again and one raced over to the little girl that was barely hanging onto conscious.
"Daddy?" Danielle slurred out, barely opening her eyes as she noticed him coming closer. Whispers broke out as the fire vanished for a moment; only two kids were able to slip through before the fire was back brighter than ever.
Maddie blinked when she watched the one Phantom looked back over to where the agents were recuperating and preparing to take them both down. Sam grabbed the original Phantom's arm and whispered something into his ear, seeming to calm him down for he absorbed the other and sped over to where Tucker was holding onto Danielle.
The hunters just stood—or laid— there watching in horror. They had never expected for there to be two Phantoms. But watching that one Phantom—the original one—duplicate himself, it scared the agents just a bit.
How many times could this single ghost duplicate himself and what if there were others with the same ability? Could they easily create an even larger army this way?
"I'm here, baby girl." Was heard by the audience as he took the little girl from Tucker before he took to the sky, the fire diminishing completely now. Maddie looked around the park. There were no traces of the flames that had consumed part of the park just moments before. The only marks were the ones made by the Guys in White and the little girl, along with the crater.
"Damn it. I really hate when he does that." Maddie heard Tucker mutter as he and Sam watched Phantom fly off, he stopped long enough to stare down at the two before vanishing with a sonic boom.
"At least he didn't kill them. He'd never forgive himself once he's gotten the time to cool down." Sam mumbled before grabbing her bag from where she dropped it and grabbed Tucker's arm. Luckily for both the teens, none of the reporters were paying enough attention to hear them. Unfortunately for them, Maddie had been getting a sample of the ghost girl's ectoplasma that had seeped out of her and she had heard them loud and clear.
'Sam and Tucker act like the Phantom has some sort of conscious. But tonight just confirmed that he was evil. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have attacked the Guys in White.' Maddie mused to herself as she watched Sam pull out her cell phone and began barking in it before she practically dragged Tucker in the direction of Fenton Works.
'In phantom's defense, you were attacking his daughter.' Maddie blinked. Where had that thought come from. It was entirely preposterous. Ghosts couldn't have children! Ghosts were nothing but manifestation of post human consciousness! They can't feel, cry, or reproduce! Maddie was sure of that! Maddie didn't know what was going on, but she was sure to be getting to the bottom of it soon. Especially now that she knew Sam and Tucker were a part of this, whatever this was.
Reviews are always welcomed. Right now I'm having trouble replying to people who review, but I promise I'll get to it when things have settled down. I hope you enjoyed this little one-shot. If there is something particular you were feeling this story should have had, please don't hesitate to post a review (however long you want) to suggest them to me.
With that, I bid you farewell!
