A few days ago it was my birthday and I told myself I HAD to write this. Let us begin…

The weeks following…what happened outside in the rain…was a mere blur of Contest after Contest. But still, even though the two Coordinators struggled,

They made it.

They qualified for the Grand Festival. The place where the Top Coordinator would be crowned. The event everyone had been preparing for…

The day May was ready for….

Or at least, she hoped she was.

"How do I look?"

It was a simple question, yet Drew found himself unable to answer.

May fidgeted uncomfortably, her eyes trailing to the ground, her cheeks tinted a slight pinkish color. They were standing in a department store, a few days from the Grand Festival. Since the Festival called for "formal attire," May had asked Drew to go shopping with her. Now though….

"Um….Drew?" she squeaked.

Drew said nothing, and just stared at May. She fidgeted again.

"Drew?"

It was that moment that Drew realized that he had never seen May…. wearing a dress. A dress. A pink dress. A (dare he admit it) cute pink dress. Sure, he had seen her outfit when she competed at the Sinnoh Contest, but that was when they were ten. At the time, he was more focused on the Appeals than the crazy Coordinators costumes. But now,

"Uh…." Was the only sound that came out of Drew. May's eyes rose slowly to meet his, worry flashing through them.

"No good?" She asked, her voice sounding disappointed. "I mean it's pretty plain, but I thought that if I put my hair up and maybe did something else it would be-"

She stopped herself when she saw Drew shaking his head.

"No, I didn't mean that." He said quickly. "I mean…that dress…. it looks really…." He began mumbling, his face slightly coloring. May couldn't hear exactly what he was saying, but she caught the words "princess" and "perfect." She cocked her head in confusion.

"What?" She asked. "I'm sorry Drew but I didn't-"

She was cut off by a soft sigh. She watched as Drew returned his gaze to her. Though he looked embarrassed, in a steady voice he said,

"You look cute."

May blinked.

"R-really?" she said, happiness seeping into her voice. "You don't think it's too plain?"

Drew shook his head.

"I think it's perfect." He said, nodding a little. "Just like a princess actually."

"A p-princess?"

"Yeah."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Really really?"

"Yeah."

"Really and truly?" May asked. "You're not just teasing me right?" Drew couldn't help but chuckle.

"Yeah." He answered again, playfully. A confused look past over May.

"Wait. Are you teasing me?" She asked.

"Yeah."

"What-! Drew!"

"I'm just answering your questions May." He said, flipping his bangs. May pouted in response.

"Honestly Drew."

"I am being honest."

"About what?"

"I'm honestly saying," he said, leaning in. "That you look princess."

"…..really?" May asked again, only this time more nervously.

"Really." Drew answered.

"And that was May from Petalburg with her beautiful Delacatty and dashing Wartortle!"

May beamed. She waved to the crowd and curtsied, her pink dress sparkling, before walking off stage. The second she got in the locker room-

"You did great out there Delcatty! You too Wartortle!"

She squealed, hugging her Pokemon close to her. The poor purple eared Pokemon could only let out a muffled "nya~" before being crushed into May's chest. Wartortle though was unfazed.

"You two were so cute! And amazing! I love you both so much!" May continued, unaware that her affection was actually causing more harm than good to at least one of her Pokemon. She spun around, causing her to get some side-glances from other Coordinators. She didn't care though. She was on cloud nine.

Her Appeal. She had nailed it.

"Nya~" Delacatty mewed weakly, unsure whether it should reciprocate or try to wriggle out of May's grip. Luckily, someone saved the delicate Pokemon.

"Wow, watch it there May. I think you're suffocating your Delacatty." Delacatty let out a thankful purr as she felt the grip around her small body relax just enough for her to jump out. Shaking herself out, she then began to fix her tousled fur. Following suit, Wartortle also jumped out of May's arms.

May turned around.

"Drew!" she said, surprised. She then smiled, her face beaming. "Did you see that Appeal? It was amazing wasn't it?" Her smile seemed to grow brighter. "I think evolving Skitty finally let me see clearly on what to do!"

It took two whole weeks of training and a convincing Drew to finally lead May to evolving her Skitty, a choice she did not regret. As a Delacatty, the Pokemon really seemed to shine and bring that "something" to May's Appeals.

She grinned at the male Coordinator. Wartortle looked up at his trainer, then at his trainer's rival before muttering a "War~!" and going off to join Delacatty. Drew looked at her, then at her Pokemon (Delacatty was mewing in annoyance at Wartortle), before returning his gaze back to May and saying,

"It was ok."

May blinked

"Hey!" She cried indignantly. "It was better than just an 'ok'!"

Drew just gave out a chuckle. "Were you expecting a compliment or something? You do realize where we are right?" May pouted, at his answer. Annoyed, she looked away.

"Fine, then I won't say anything about your Appeal."

She heard another laugh come from Drew. "I doubt that will possible May." She shot him a glare and was about to reply when,

"And our next contestant is Drew from LaRousse!" The loudspeaker said, effectively cutting her off.

"That's me." Drew said.

"Yeah, I heard," grumbled May. She paused though, looking at Drew. After all the time she spent traveling with him, May could tell that Drew was nervous. He was fiddling with the buttons on his suit (something that he had to wear for the Grand Festival) and had loosened his tie (making him look unintentionally cooler.)

If she really did look like a princess (and Drew wasn't just teasing her), then he looked like a prince.

Still, Drew was nervous. That much she could tell.

Reaching out, she grasped his hand. Without saying anything, she looked at him and smiled.

A surprised look came across his face, before relaxing, taking his previous nervous expression away. Using his other hand, Drew reached over and pulled May close to him. Kissing her on the forehead he whispered, very softly,

"Good job."

Before pulling back and giving her a wink. No sense of nervousness present on his face, Drew turned around and walked off, out of the locker room.

Leaving a blushing May in the locker room. After a minute, she let out a content sigh. Then she giggled to herself.

She felt so lucky. Lucky to have someone like Drew in her life. She felt so-

"Aw! Wasn't that just the sweetest?" A loud voice snapped May out of her dream-like state and brought her back to reality. A wave of slight panic washed through her.

"Now Harley, don't make fun of them."

"But aren't they just the sweetest! I think I'm getting a cavity!"

May spun around to face the two Coordinators that were behind her. She could feel herself blushing.

They had definitely seen what just happened between herself and Drew.

"May darling!" Harley gushed, grasping both of May's hands in his, as if making sure she had zero chance of escape. "Great job with your Appeal.."

"T-thanks Harley. I-"

"But let's get down to the real juicy bits!" He exclaimed, his eyes widening. "I think I just saw something between you and a certain green- haired Coordinator, right Solidad?"

Solidad just shrugged, yet May could see a curious twinkle in her eye. "I saw as much as you did Harley." Was all she said.

"Exactly! I know what I saw so…" Harley said, drawing out his words.

"Are you and Drew…. you know…doing something that starts with a 'D' and rhymes with skating?" He asked loudly, his eyes searching for an answer. May could tell that he really wanted the answer too as she felt her whole self being analyzed under his curious eyes.

"Um…well…" Was all May could say. She tried to look away from Harley but, to her horror, was met by equally curious eyes of other Coordinators, each wondering the same exact question…

"Oh Arceus," She muttered under her breath.

"What? Tell me tell me tell me!" Harley said, his voice rising. Now not just the surrounding Coordinators but others too were starting to either look directly at May or were beginning to steal glances at her. Feeling uncomfortable, May stepped back a little from Harley and squeezed her eyes shut. Still, Harley's iron grip was around her wrists and it didn't feel like he would be letting her go until she answered his question. She took a small breath.

"I mean…" she began again, painfully aware that not just Harley was listening to her. "Drew and I are just-"

"Speaking of Drew," Solidad said, effectively saving May. "He's Appealing right now."

May opened her eyes, giving Solidad a grateful glance. Solidad gave her a wink. Placing a hand on Harley's shoulder she said,

"Why don't we discuss…whatever you were about to discuss later with Drew? I think right now May would want to see his Appeal."

Another slight wave of panic ran through May. With Drew? Discuss them with Harley and Solidad with Drew?

"B-but," she began.

An annoyed sigh came from Harley. "Fine." He said, letting go of May's wrists. Surrounding Coordinators also seemed to sigh, but May ignored them. Though she was relieved that Solidad had saved her, it seemed that the second Drew got back, the questions would begin again. Panic began to spread through her. How would he react? What would he say? Questions rushed through her head-

But at least, she thought, she didn't face Harley's wrath right now.

Harley though looked less grateful. He muttered something about never getting to the good part before crossing his arms. Deciding to ignore him, May turned her attention to the screen. She smiled.

There was Drew, center stage in all his glory. He bowed slightly, causing screams to go through the crowd. Even from where she was standing in the locker room, May could hear the screams of his fan girls. It made Delacatty prick up her ears and run back to May, slightly alarmed. Returning her (and Wartortle) May watched as Drew began,

And could only gape at his Appeal.

Using the combined forces of Magical Leaf and Silver Wind, Drew had turned the whole stage into a forest. Then,

"Now Roserade! Petal Dance! Masquerain Silver Wind Again!"

The stage seemed to turn into a rose garden as petals and leaves danced in perfect harmony.

"Amazing." Breathed May. As usual, Drew always seemed to accomplish the impossible. His Appeals were just…. amazing. She watched as he ended his Appeal, his Pokemon returning to his side and the three of them all bowing.

"He really deserves to win this year." She whispered. Solidad looked at her.

"You think?" Solidad asked. "Because I think he said the same thing when he was watching your Appeals." May blinked.

"He did?" She asked surprised. Solidad nodded. A warm feeling began flooding through May, making her cheeks slightly red.

"He did?!" Harley exclaimed, shocked. "Where was I during this?"

"I don't know, maybe fixing that Gothitelle costume you have on." Solidad said, shrugging slightly.

"Aw, how could I miss such an important moment like that?" Harley cried.

"Like what?" A familiar voice asked. May recognized the voice and spun around.

"Drew," she said. "That Appeal was amazing!" Drew flipped his bangs.

"Naturally." He said. May shook her head.

"No, I mean it really was." She said again, walking towards him. "Your Appeal…. it was just so…"

"So?" Drew asked.

May paused, searching for a word to describe his Appeal. His Appeal brought the best out of his team. It seemed to be simple yet was extravagant. His Appeal was very…

"You." May said firmly. "You. I could recognize that it was you performing out there." She smiled, looking down. "I could tell it was an Appeal only you would be able to do and pull off." She said. A small gasp came from Drew, causing her to look back up again. She giggled when she saw Drew's face,

His cheeks were slightly pink, and he was trying not to make eye contact with her out of embarrassment….

Something that went noticed by Harley.

"AW!" The costume wearing Coordinator pretty much yelled, startling the May and Drew. They both faced Harley and May could feel the panic once again rising inside of her, taking away the happy feeling she had just had.

"You two are so cute! In fact," Harley said, his voice becoming mischievous. "I think you guys have been openly cute for some time…" May tensed under his stare.

"W-we're not…"

"Harley..." Solidad said, eyes narrowing.

"You said we can talk about it when Drew came and now he's here," Harley said. Throwing his head back, he pointed at the two Coordinators and asked in a loud, authoritative, Harley voice,

"Are you two dating?"

The silence that followed that question was deafening. Drew and May could feel the stares of the Coordinators directed to them.

"Um…well…" May began, nervously poking her two fingers together. "Umm…"

She glanced at Drew, wondering what expression he was making. She was surprised to see that he was keeping a calm look on his face and straight at Harley.

Solidad just let out another sigh.

"I don't say this often," Solidad said. "But Harley…sometimes you really are as dense as a Psyduck."

"What! Solidad!" Harley cried indignantly. "I was just asking if-"

"Yes, we are." Drew said coolly. May felt her heart leap into her throat.

Harley stopped. Solidad's slightly peeved look disappeared, replaced by one of shock. On looking Coordinators gasped.

"What?!" Harley (and some other Coordinators) exclaimed. Drew nodded. He reached out and grabbed May's hand.

"D-Drew?"

"We're…. We're dating." He repeated confidently (though May could see his rising embarrassment.) He flicked his bangs with his other hand and asked,

"Is that so surprising?"

The whole room went silent. Dead quiet. Even the Pokemon out of their Pokeballs seem to go quiet. All eyes were on the two Coordinators that magazines, newspapers, and fans had been following for weeks. All eyes were on Drew and May.

Then,

"Finally!" Someone called out.

"They're really dating?"

"I can't believe it!"

"You go you two!"

Some Coordinators cheered, others even clapped. Every single Coordinator expressed some sort of joy.

"Congratulations!"

"Aw! I knew you two were perfect for each other!"

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"

The whole room seemed to be applauding them. Blushing and shocked yet filled with happiness, May squeezed Drew's hand as if telling him,

"Good job."

Another rush of happiness spread though May as she felt Drew squeezing her hand back as if to say.

"Thanks."

XXXXXXX

The top 32 Coordinators dwindled to top 28,

Then top 15,

Then top 10,

And finally,

The top 3.

May stared up at the screen. One by one, Coordinators had been eliminated in the battles and one by one, she was a step closer to her dream.

"It's crazy," May muttered. Drew looked at her, confused.

"What is?" He asked. The two of them were sitting in the now empty locker room, waiting for the next battle,

Their battle.

"I mean…it's crazy how we're both in the top 3." May said, her hands clasped within Drew's.

Drew nodded.

"Yeah…" he said. "Better be ready for when you go against me." May let out a small laugh.

"I'm ready." She said, leaning against Drew. She felt a small smile touch her lips as he leaned back.

"Good."

A silence came over the two as they waited to be called out on stage. A soft, comfortable silence. May closed her eyes.

Happy, she felt happy.

"I'm surprised he beat Solidad actually." Drew suddenly said.

"Yeah," May agreed, opening her eyes.

About an half an hour ago, Solidad and Harley had gone up against each other and, amazingly, it was Harley that emerged victorious. May noticed that it was Drew who seemed more surprised at Solidad's defeat than even Solidad was.

"I guess whoever wins goes up against him."

"You mean basically becomes Top Coordinator."

"Don't get to cocky Drew."

Drew just grunted in response.

"…"

"…Drew?"

"Hm?"

"Are you…. Uh...nothing…" She heard Drew let out a small sigh.

"Just say it May." He said soothingly.

"Are you….nervous?" She asked.

"Nervous?"

"Yeah."

Drew paused for a second before answering.

"No." he answered truthfully. "I'm….I'm…actually excited."

"Excited?" May asked, sounding confused. Drew nodded.

"I mean…since we traveled together…there's been so many battles…" He said. "But against you…. I…I like battling against you…" He said pulling back to look at her. She looked at him.

"It's funny. I think ever since I met you I liked battling against you."

"Really?"

"Yeah." Drew said. "I was always excited about what new moves you would use. I think that excitement is what made me want to be a even better Coordinator."

"Oh."

The silence came across the two again. Then,

"I was always excited battling you too Drew," May said. "Every time we battled, I just wanted to beat you and show you that I was worthy to be a Coordinator. Worthy to be your rival." A small laugh came from Drew.

"And now? He asked suddenly.

"Hm?"

"Why do you want to beat me now?" Drew asked. May didn't even pause to think.

"I want to beat you because I love you." She said simply. "In fact, I want you to feel how much I love you through our battle today."

Drew looked at her, dumbfounded. Then he smiled.

Only May could say something like that. Something so true.

"Then, I'll make sure to accept it." He said, flicking his bangs. May playfully shoved him. Or at least tried to.

Drew caught her hands instead. There was a momentary pause, both looking at each other. Then, leaning in,

They kissed.

"Stay with me." Drew said, after pulling apart. "Travel with me…again…please…"

May really did laugh. "Of course I will you dummy. After all," She said,

"After all, I love you."
