Author's Note:
Wow, so it's been a while... Sorry bout that... I've had exams and such (Not that that's even a good excuse since I did literally NO study) and also I sorta got sick of Fanfiction... For a few weeks there just the thought of ff made me actually want to vomit, but I'm over it now I think.
You're lucky, if you like this story, because a couple of days ago I was seriously considering deleting this entire story. But I just read over it last night and forgot what it was that made me feel so crappy... So yeah I've actually gone back and edited quite a few chapters (but nothing so major that I'd say re-read the story for).
So yeah, wrote this today, hope it was worth the wait
Chapter Twelve: Lost.
The morning was slow, and everyone was reluctant to rise from slumber. Besides the early-bird chatter, and constant rustle of leaves from the surrounding trees, only the sounds of people adjusting in their sleep could be heard.
Naruto woke first, which we can count as incredibly strange since he isn't exactly a morning person. He opened his eyes, immediately feeling happy when he felt arms around him and soft breath against his neck. Although being all wrapped up was nice, nature was calling, so Naruto wriggled out of Sasuke's arms, somehow managing not to wake anyone.
There were no clear blue skies this morning, and the air was hot and sticky, trapped beneath the thick blanket of grey clouds hanging above. Naruto rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he walked across the clearing. He looked up at the sky, already missing the sun. This was the worst kind of weather.
When Naruto returned from his so-very-satisfying pee, Sasuke was also awake. He finished folding a blanket and placed it on the ground. Then he turned to look at Naruto, smirking at his blonde hair that seemed confused as to which direction it was supposed to go in.
"Mornin'," Naruto said cheerily. "Shitty weather today, hey? No sun and it feels like I'm walking in jelly."
Sasuke rolled his eyes. Of course Naruto loved the sun. "I like the rain. And by the looks of it," Sasuke looked up "rain is coming soon."
"Mmm." Naruto mumbled. "Hey you wanna go for a walk somewhere?"
"Somewhere?" Sasuke didn't really like the sound of that,
"Well, there's not exactly anything around here, but there's bucket-loads of tracks, and there's never anybody on them. We could just take a random one and see where it leads us."
Sasuke shook his head, not believing what he was about to say. "That sounds fun."
Naruto didn't seem to believe it either. "A-are you? Did you just? Uh… Okay," his confusion quickly turned to joy. "Great!" He skipped off to his tent to grab his jacket.
No breakfast? Sasuke thought, as Naruto ran back to him yelling "Let's go!"
Sasuke knew Naruto was just too excited to think about food, so he brought some with them in a small backpack. It would only be a matter of time before the blonde forgot his excitement and started to whine about being hungry.
"Where shall we go, Sasuke?!" Naruto said animatedly, pulling Sasuke along behind him. "I don't know any of the tracks very well, but I think I can remember which direction they go in…"
Naruto paused in front of the beginnings of a track and Sasuke had a thought. He grabbed Naruto by the wrist and took the lead. "Follow me Naruto."
"But wait! Sasuke, there isn't even a track here!"
Sasuke assured Naruto that his memory would bring them back safely, so Naruto forgot his worries and ran ahead of Sasuke.
"This is way funner than taking a track!" Naruto yelled back to Sasuke, using the roots of a tree to climb up over a small cliff.
"'More fun', idiot." Sasuke corrected him.
"I'm soooo hungry!" Naruto plonked down on a huge exposed tree root, rubbing his growling stomach.
"We did skip breakfast." Sasuke said sitting down beside Naruto. He took off his backpack and set it down in front of Naruto. "I brought food, because I knew this'd happen."
"Sasuke, yay!" He began rummaging through the bag. "Hm, what's this?" Naruto pulled a small camping flask out. "Hot chocolate?"
"Hot water."
Naruto looked at Sasuke weirdly. "Why would you bring hot water?" Sasuke didn't answer and Naruto went back to rummaging. Sasuke braced himself for the inevitable squeal that was to come, and sure enough: Naruto had found the instant cup-ramen.
"Has anyone seen Sasuke or Naruto?" Ino asked as everyone ate their breakfast.
There was a chorus of tired 'no's and 'nah's.
"Maybe they went for a swim?" Hinata suggested quietly.
Kiba leaned over and grabbed some more toast. "Who even cares?" He said.
The trees were gradually becoming less dense and Naruto and Sasuke found themselves in a small glade. The ground was overgrown – wildflowers, grass and weeds all mingling with bugs that moved in jerky motions – but it was strangely beautiful.
"Let's stop here for lunch!" Naruto exclaimed.
Sasuke's eyes widened. "We ate twenty minutes ago!"
Naruto laughed. "Oh Sasuke, you are so naïve."
Sasuke muttered something unintelligible before following after Naruto and sitting down.
Naruto ate while Sasuke just sat and watched him. After Naruto finished devouring most of their food supply he lay down. He didn't say anything for quite a while, and Sasuke was beginning to think he'd fallen asleep. He was about to check when Naruto suddenly spoke.
"Sasuke, how come you hate me so much?" Sasuke frowned at the question. "Well, I suppose you don't hate me now… but you used to, and I never really understood why…"
Sasuke lay down too, contemplating his answer. He wasn't even sure he knew.
After a while Sasuke spoke. "You annoyed me." He said quietly, staring up at the sky. Naruto turned his head and peered at Sasuke's face through the grass. "Any time I see you, you look happy. Life is easy for you, and that makes me angry." Sasuke huffed "Not to mention you're loud and extremely obnoxious."
Naruto didn't say anything and Sasuke began to worry that he'd offended him; until Naruto started to laugh.
"Ah-hah– of course –hah– it'd be something –ahah– that!"
Sasuke sat up, thoroughly offended. "Why is that funny, idiot?!"
"It's just –hahah– that's exactly why Gaara –ahah– used to hate me!" Naruto wiped a tear from his eye. Sasuke crossed his arms over his chest, a look of indignation on his face. "I wonder why he stopped." He said angrily.
Naruto sat up, his laughing fit winding down. "Aww Sasuke, don't say that," he pouted and crawled towards Sasuke. "You'll make me cry."
"Hn." Naruto crept closer, on all fours, up behind Sasuke. "Seeing you cry might make this holiday worthwhile."
Naruto pounced on Sasuke and rolled him over onto his back. "Naruto what are you-" Naruto cut Sasuke off with a kiss.
"Ugh, you taste like ramen."
The sky had darkened significantly since the morning. A flash of lightening lit up the clouds, and was followed by a clap of thunder that echoed through the sky. In a hurry Naruto rolled off Sasuke and onto his back. Raindrops began to fall.
"We should get back." Naruto said standing and stretching his arms up.
Sasuke stood also. "That sounded so responsible, Naruto. Is your stupidity all an act?" He teased, lifting his backpack from the ground.
"I just think we might not be able to find our way back so easily if it starts to rain."
Sasuke smirked. "This way then." He swung his bag over one shoulder and made his way across the glade.
"Wait Sasuke," Naruto chased after him "I think we came from that direction."
"No. Trust me Naruto; my sense of direction is far superior to yours." There was another clash of thunder, and Naruto ran to catch up with Sasuke, grabbing onto his arm.
"Not scared are you?" the Uchiha smirked.
"Of course not! I was worried about you."
"Sure…"
"We're what?!" Naruto yelled and there was a particularly loud clap of thunder and suddenly it was pouring with rain.
Sasuke laughed and grabbed Naruto's wrist. He ran, pulling Naruto along behind him. The foliage above them wasn't dense and didn't protect them from the rain at all. In a matter of minutes they were both soaked to the bone. Sasuke could hear Naruto yelling but he ignored him, and instead tried to find somewhere they could shelter. He spied a hole in a huge shrub with purple flowers and pushed Naruto through it, following behind on his hands and knees. They found themselves underneath the cover of a thick mat of vines, resting on soft green moss. The knitted leaves that rested low above them not only kept out most of the heavy rain, but it was also much quieter. Sasuke could now hear the obscenities that Naruto was yelling.
"You fucking got us lost! After all that bull about having a 'superior sense of direction' and a 'good memory'!" Naruto shoved Sasuke's chest. "How the hell are we gonna get back to the campsite now, bastard?!"
"Don't worry about that now, Na-ru-to." Sasuke said, crawling forward. "I believe earlier we were interrupted." Naruto saw the glint in Sasuke's eyes and tried to scramble backwards. All he achieved was lying down on the soft, green moss with Sasuke on top of him.
"Sas- ah!"
"I hope Naruto and Sasuke are alright…" Hinata said, looking out worriedly at the heavy downpour of rain.
Kiba smiled down at her. "I'm sure they're fine."
"Yeah, Hinata!" Ino yelled. "I'm sure they've found a cosy little cave to have sex in or something!"
A furious blush appeared on Hinata's face and she looked down.
Sasuke brushed his hand down the side of Naruto's face, feeling the three scars with his thumbs.
"I can't believe you got us lost." Naruto said again, but his words had lost the anger.
Sasuke leaned down and touched his lips to Naruto's. "As long as we're lost," he whispered, his hot breath fanning out over Naruto's lips. "We might as well make the most of it."
In truth, Sasuke knew exactly where they were, but he thought that pretending they were lost would be more fun. He had Naruto where he wanted him, and until the rain stopped, they wouldn't be going anywhere.
"I suppose," Naruto pouted, pretending to be nonchalant, but his heart was racing.
