Be the Light
Ur had always told him that he needed to know all the arts of being an "idol".
Of course, when you're trying to teach an 8 year old boy how to dance when the said boy is convinced that "dancing is for girls", anything is good to motivate him.
At that time, his mother had been sick and his father was often away because of his newest work. They had thought, with Silver's legacy of pop/rock idol career back in the 80s, to subscribe their son, Gray, to go into the same path.
Ur had a dance school near his elementary school and he'd go two times a week. Before he knew, two times turned into everyday of the week, even on weekends. Everything was better than going back to an empty apartment.
Also, not that he would've said it out-loud, but he liked being with Ur. He liked the lesson, he liked the fun he'd have, and he even enjoyed Lyon's company, even if the other kid was annoying. But moreover, he liked to dance.
She had even taught him to play the bass. It was probably her fault if until now he still couldn't play or dance with his shirt on. "You have to feel it more," she had always told him.
So when Ur died suddenly of cancer, near his 12th birthday, Gray thought his world was ending. His mother's death had been hard, but having her being sick all his life had somewhat prepared him for the shock.
But Ur's death had been so sudden, so hard, Gray thought he'd never dance again.
Life always giving new opportunities, he was soon after scouted to be a trainee at FTE, also known as Fairy Tail Entertainment. There, he found new friends, new ideas; a new way to create his art.
With Natsu, even if the guy was a complete idiot, they had already made plans to debut together; Natsu at the vocals and the guitar and Gray at the bass. He put on the side his dancing training and focused on the bass.
It took till he was 15 before he heard back about Lyon. They had lost touch since Ur's dead, both taking hard. After all, whatever she said, they were her favourite kids after her daughter.
Lyon being scout in Lamia Scale Agency, and that his debut was close as a pop idol. Gray was a bit envious, but the stronger feeling was of a competition; he had no intention to lose to his old friend but he wanted to compete as a rock band. The dance was part of the past: good memories but nothing more.
So when Makarov told him to participate to a dance competition, he didn't understand. The executive producer of FTE was never one to force his talent to do something they weren't comfortable in.
But he had told him at that time: "You still can dance."
He never thought someone actually knew he kept practicing routines. He felt the obligation to, one last time, dance for a public.
That's when he met her.
She was gracious, precise to the point of being spot-on perfect. Anyone in the room could see she had years and years of training. Yet, there was one thing lacking in her performance: emotions. She looked like a doll: perfectly executing the moves yet not knowing the feelings behind them.
Ur had always told him to dance as if his life depended on it. At 8 years old, it seemed quite extreme but looking at her, everything made sense.
She finished her routine and everyone clapped, the judge thanking her. She bowed, not even seeming satisfied with her performance and went out the stage, glancing quickly at Gray as she passed by in the backstage.
His name was called and he went on stage. Weirdly enough, he wasn't feeling nervous. He didn't even want to win this thing. He just wanted to prove to himself, to prove to Ur wherever she was, that he still could dance.
The music started and Gray's body followed.
He only gained back conscience when the music stopped.
Everyone clapped and the judges said their thanks. He went backstage and saw the blue-haired girl who had danced previously. She was looking at him with awed expression and a blush covering her cheeks. He acknowledged her presence by a nod and she blushed even more.
The next day, Makarov called him at his office.
"The competition you did yesterday," he started, his smile widening progressively, "you won."
"Ah. Cool," was Gray's answer.
"You know the first price was for a dance show they are producing."
"Yeah. But not interested."
"What?!" one of the spoilsport producer exclaimed. "You cannot refuse this kind of offer!"
"I told already I wanted to play the bass. I just did the competition because Makarov asked me." Among other reasons, not that he wanted to tell them.
"But-!"
Makarov did a sign of hand for him to shut up. "It's fine." He then smiled at Gray. "Did you found your answers?"
Gray thought about it. "Yeah."
"Then you are free to go."
"But Makarov-san!"
Gray didn't stay to hear the argument.
It took few days later for him to cross road with the blue-haired girl from the dance competition.
"Juvia heard that Gray-sama refused to be part of the dance production…" said the blue-haired girl.
Gray blinked. "Yeah. I refused."
"May Juvia ask why?"
He shrugged. "It was a last time thing. I have other things to focus on."
She glanced at the case on his back. "Guitar?"
"Bass. I love playing bass even more than I like dancing. I just wanna see where that can get me."
She looked down. "Juvia wanted to dance with Gray-sama." She looked back at him. "Gray-sama's dance had been so beautiful, so inspiring, Juvia can never dance like that!"
Gray felt himself blush to the compliment. "Your dance wasn't bad either. You just lack of emotions."
"Juvia doesn't know how to dance with emotions! Juvia have always been told to be perfect in the moves."
"Just enjoy it."
"Enjoy?"
"You like dancing right? Then just have fun with it." He gave half a smile, readjusting his case on his shoulder. "I have to go." He waved his hand at her and went toward his practice with Natsu.
For weeks, afterward, he kept running into this Juvia. And suddenly, she got into FTE. Apparently her agency had been into fishy business.
It took her couple of months to get an announcement of debut with other girls of the agency for a pop idol girl group: Fairyz. Gray was disappointed, he had thought he had chance for a next debut and Natsu was just sad that their "recruit", Lucy, had been stolen for another group. Though that Lucy had never said she wanted to be in a rock band in first place but Natsu liked to think everything would always go as he planned.
Gray was then again called to Makarov's office. Once he arrived he realized Elfman, another recruit since forever and Gajeel, one of the newest one that also had been in Juvia's agency were in the office.
"What's going on?" asked Gray.
"We are just waiting for one more player," said Makarov, a secretive smile on his face.
It's only instant later that Natsu barged in.
"Debut?" asked Elfman, seeing the people around him.
"Yes. Good guess. From now on, you four will be "Elements". A rock band of FTE," explained Makarov, seeming extremely happy with the news he was announcing.
"What ya' mean, old man!" roared Gajeel, standing up. "I told ya' I wanna be a blues man!"
Makarov sighed. "I told you, no one would listen to your blues, especially with your singing." Gajeel grumbled but sat down, letting Makarov continue: "But, with Natsu's voice, your words will be heard. You just have to play the guitar too. Then we'll have Gray's bass and Elfman's drums. It will be perfect. You'll debut in 5 months."
"So soon?" exclaimed Gray. "We didn't even practice together yet!"
"I believe you'll do great." Makarov paused, looking the four of them. "All four of you will be great."
It didn't take long after Makarov's announcement for everything to get in movement. They took a song that Gajeel had wrote, that Natsu modified, which ensued a fight but weirdly enough, by the end of all, a demo was created. Then two, then five.
The producers were letting them surprisingly free to do whatever inside some measures and Makarov had been right: they were doing great.
Meanwhile, his time with Juvia increased. Now that they were in the same agency, both at a similar stage of their career, the chances for both of them to talk increased. But when they did, the girls always gave him that look. Didn't help he knew Erza, Cana and Levy for years now since they had been trainees for FTE before him. And even if knew Lucy for least then a year, Natsu forcing her to tag along everywhere he went made him think he knew her for a decade.
So it was nothing knew that they talked at Fairyz's debut party, but for the one time in many months, she said something that surprised him: "Juvia was really looking forward dancing with Gray-sama."
He hid his surprised by a shrug.
"But Gray-sama really looks good with the bass. Juvia is looking forward Elements' debut! Juvia will be Gray-sama's biggest fan!"
He chuckled shyly. "Yeah. Thanks." He sipped from the coke he had been drinking. "Your dance, there's more life to it." Of course now she was dancing cutesy pop song but she looked ten times more enjoying then her spot-on yet stiff ballet jazz performance he had once seen her do. Her dancing now made people want to follow her and really, wasn't being an idol all about?
She beamed at him. "Thank you. But Juvia still want to dance with Gray-sama."
He chuckled. "If you bring a good enough song."
He thought he would make her back down with that.
Little did he knew that, years later, she'd come with a demo and a choreography so good, he just wouldn't be able to say no.
The End
