Chapter 15

Kid watched her eyes meet his, read the words that fell from her lips, and slowly began to give in to the crushing hole that was welling up in his chest. He felt his entire body go cold as Black Star burst through the door, no doubt about to tell Maka of all the lies he's been feeding her. A numbing sensation ran through his body, his vision began to slowly go black as he realized just how many lives he's destroyed for his father. He could feel the burning hatred beginning deep inside his heart and knew that he would never forgive himself for what he's done, no matter what.

He felt a small warmth wrap around his hand and vaguely wondered if he was starting to disintegrate before he finally opened his eyes and saw Maka's hand wrapped around his. Fear engulfed him as he glanced at a now crying Black Star, wondering just how much of the story he told her. A sound drew Kid back to facing Maka. It was a light tinkling sound that pleased his ears to hear that he just could not place.

"Come on, Kid. I wanna get away from these guys for a while...We can go back to the manor and I'll take care of you while your hands heal! Would that be okay?" Maka said in a happy tone that melted Kids now freezing heart.

The reaper blinked a few times and glanced at his father who would not look at him, but gently tapped his shoulder in a comforting manner. Kid's mouth was too dry for him to speak, he just gulped once and nodded his head rapidly in Makas direction. He heard the noise once more, but this time he knew what it was. Maka was laughing again.

Kid was slouched over in his chair in the Death Room, his head in his hands as he felt even more sorry for himself than ever.

"So he just...Covered up for us?" Kid managed after silently listening to his fathers story for the longest time.

Lord Death would not turn to face him, he seemed suddenly interested in the far corner of the Death Room and stared in that direction intently as he replied.

"Yes. It seemed to convince Maka for now, and the memory work we did on her seems to be standing strong." His father muttered.

There was a pounding in Kids head that was nearly unbearable to him. "So what do we do with her now?" He croaked.

His father didn't answer. Kid found it suddenly hard to breath as he processed his thoughts. The thought of Black Star feeding Maka only more lies to try and give her a shot at happiness made him feel hollow on the inside. Absentmindedly he wondered what Soul and Black Star were doing right now. Were they regretting their decision to leave Makas memories behind her? The image of Black Star suddenly bursting through the Death Rooms walls and ending Kids pathetic life here and now came into his brain and he managed a small smile at the thought.

The last few days had been almost unbearable for Kid. He sat with Maka, laughing and smiling as if nothing was wrong, as if he wasn't responsible for her pain. She seemed almost normal, aside from always worrying about Kids stitches that is. She laughed and joked with all of them, even with his father, who never returned a smile or said a word to her. Kid could only imagine the dark thoughts that must run through his fathers mind when he sees Maka.

His father suddenly turned to face him, "I believe that we should put this event behind us. Allow her to live her life again, a life where she will be happy." He said in a stern voice.

The walls that were holding Kid up from the abyss inside of him suddenly collapsed, leaving Kid as just a hollow shell, he couldn't even summon the will to speak. All he could do was sink to the floor and let his sadness out in a way that he would classify as pathetic. He did not know how long he sat there, sobbing his eyes out like a baby. All he knew when he woke up was that there was no way he would ever put this behind him.

"What did you just say?" Kid asked in disbelief.

Maka cringed slightly at his tone but stood strong nonetheless. She was going to speak her mind this time.

"I said I want to attend the academy and find a weapon." She said in what she hoped was a determined voice.

The small girl watched the gears in Kids head turn slowly as he continued eating his breakfast, keeping eye contact with her as he went. Months have already passed since the strange encounter with those two sad boys, the girl could remember it almost perfectly. She could recall the weight of sadness she felt when the story had unfolded before her, she couldn't help but cry with the boy as he explained how hard the loss was to her. Ever since that day she had become determined to become a meister, to try and avenge a girl she didn't know. Kid set down his spoon and laced his hands in front of him.

"This is a pretty big decision, Maka. I'm not quite sure you are ready right now and I-"

"But you and the girls get to go! I want to go with you!" She objected, cringing at the way Kids eyes sparked as she interrupted him. "Please Kid, I want to." She pleaded.

Kid cleared his throat and stood up. "I will talk to my father about getting you enrolled, you'll start tomorrow." He said briskly before walking out of the dining room.

Maka couldn't help but dance around the kitchen as she tried to contain her excitement for the following day.

"Are you sure we can enroll her?" Kid asked for yet the hundredth time.

His father nodded once more, not bothering to look up from his paperwork. "She's enrolled and ready to attend the same classes you do." He muttered.

Kid felt his gut clench. "And when she gets there? There's no doubt she'll pick Soul as her weapon."

His father stopped writing briefly but continued on shortly after his pause. "I hope that our memory work holds out then, or we could have a lot of trouble on our hands." He muttered darkly.

Kid rubbed his temples and stormed out of the Death Room, slamming the door on his way out. As he continued down the empty hallways of the academy he began to silently curse his name even more than he did before. Half of him hoped that Maka would get her memory back tomorrow, he wanted her to hate him so badly that he even contemplated telling her of his sins quite a few times over the past few months. And yet, another part of Kid wanted her to remain like this, she seemed happy at least, believing the fake past they had given her, starting over fresh with everyone. Kid didn't like it but he had even begun to develop feelings for her, as sick and twisted as it was that he did.

The room around him began to spin sickeningly at the thought of losing her at school tomorrow, tears sprung into his eyes as he realized just how much he cared for her. He didn't know why, but Kid began to run as fast as he could towards the manor.

He opened the doors a with a little to much force, he yelled her name a little too loud, he knew he wasn't being normal, but he didn't care. He just needed to find Maka. The sound of feet hitting the floor told Kid that she had heard him, and was possibly sprinting to find out what was wrong. Sure enough, she came flying around the corner, losing her balance and ending up on the floor in a small Maka bundle.

She looked up at Kid from the floor fearfully. "What is it, Kid? What's wrong?"

He couldn't stop his tears from spilling over as he picked her up gingerly from the floor and brought her into the first hug he'd given her in a long, long, time. Her arms wrapped around him hesitantly at first as he tried to calm himself down mentally, spouting out words he couldn't really control at the moment.

"I'm so sorry, I just didn't want to lose you. I was so scared." He said in a frail voice.

He felt Maka tense up at his words and she pulled back, eyeing him in a surprised way.

"Are you alright, Kid? This isn't like you." She said slowly, blush appearing on her cheeks.

Kid felt a smile creep onto his face. "Sorry, I didn't mean to surprise you. I guess the idea of handing you to someone else just scares me a bit." He laughed.

The blush on Makas face deepened as she processed what that must've meant. "Oh, Kid I just. I don't really know how I feel, I mean I know I like you but I'm just not sure if we should." She spluttered, her eyes darting anywhere but Kids.

Kid touched her face lightly and smiled the first real smile he could manage since the day she arrived on his doorstep. "Has anyone ever told you your eyes are the most beautiful shade of green?" He said quietly.

His arm began to burn as Maka punched him away and began spouting random words as she got more and more nervous, making Kid smile even wider. Slowly he began to laugh as she turned all different kinds of red, punching him even more times in the arm as he laughed at her.

"You wouldn't lose me anyways, idiot." He heard Maka mutter through her embarrassment.

Kid laughed even more, but this time Maka joined in, her red slowly disappearing from her face as they laughed as loud as they possibly could. A few minutes later, a curious Patty strolled into the room to find them passed out on the floor, their faces purple from lack of oxygen, which resulted in Patty laughing at how silly they look and a concerned Liz screaming at the top of her lungs while she tried to revive them. The girls didn't even noticed the two unconscious teenagers hands that were tightly intertwined.

Maka was nervous, so was Kid, she could tell that Kid was more nervous than she was, if possible. She was determined to make a good impression on everyone, to make friends at school, not to be made fun of. Of course she was looking for a partner too, but that could wait for now.

"Here, you wait in the hallway while I talk to Professor Stein." Kid said in a commanding tone before giving her a gentle smile. "Don't worry, you'll be fine." He muttered before disappearing into the room with a moon over it.

Maka fidgeted nervously in the hallway, so preoccupied with her nerves that she didn't even hear the boy approaching her.

"Hey, you." A cool voice said from behind her, causing her to squeak and jump a little.

She turned around to find herself face to face with the boy who had mistaken her for his partner what seemed like forever ago. She felt herself turning red but ignored it.

"OH. Hello! It's been a while since I've seen you. How're you doing? I'm enrolling into this class today and I'm a little nervous in case you can't really tell. But how're you?" She spluttered in one breath.

The boy smiled and rubbed the back of his neck. "You're really annoying, you know that?" He muttered.

She blinked a few times before stomping her foot and pointing at him accusingly. "You can't just say something so rude to someone you just met!" She said in an offensive tone.

The silver haired boy laughed and looked her in the face. "And your eyes are a really creepy shade of green, have you ever thought of changing them? It might make you cool." He said through his laughing.

Maka stomped again and opened her mouth, but the boy stopped her before she could start.

"Don't bother, I'm only kidding with you after all." He laughed while flashing her a cool smile. "Hey, I'm sorry about how I acted before and everything. I'm a lot better now, trust me. I'm the coolest guy around." He winked.

Confusion swirled around in Maka's head as she tried to figure out how to understand this guy. "Whatever you say, I suppose." She said tiredly.

"Hey, if you don't have anybody else to sit next to today, besides symmetry freak of course, maybe we could sit next to each other. I don't even know why I attend school really, since I don't have a meister and all-"

Maka suddenly got excited. "You don't have a meister? I don't have a weapon." She said in a happy tone.

The boy's face flashed happiness briefly before returning to his 'cool' stare. "Why don't we start out with names? My name's Soul Eater." He said, offering his hand.

Maka's smile widened, "My name's Maka Albarn. Nice to meet you." She said happily as she took his hand.

Kid opened the door to the classroom again and smiled at their awkward handshake, gesturing for Maka to enter the classroom. The ashy haired girl smiled at him and walked inside, determined to make a good impression and to create memories with her new friends that will stick with her forever.
