Chapter 14
Gaahhh guys this is the final chapter ;v;
Also, this is for a birthday present for an amazing friend on Tumblr. I hope you have an incredible day Ava and love reading this chapter as much as I loved writing it! ^3^
Mordecai felt sick to his stomach when he caught sight of Skips' horrified expression and he swore he saw the yeti shaking slightly. Rigby was frozen in both terror and mortification in the doorway and the only thing both men could do was stare, numbed with emotion from what was in front of them and what was yet to come.
Mordecai swallowed and turned his head back to Benson, but the split second his eyes met the gumball machines, everything just hit him all at once and his eyes went wide. He pushed Benson off him and held his head, crouching down with his eyes shut tight, his teeth clenched.
"Skips." Rigby glanced from the yeti to the blue jay. "What-What's happening to him?"
Skips stared at Mordecai for a few seconds before answering but before he could speak, Benson looked over at him.
"Him?" Benson asked, his voice strained in frustrated confusion. "Skips, what the heck is going on?!"
Skips held the test tube tight in his hand. He could see the terror stricken expression on Benskns face and he felt his heart stop. "It's...a long story Benson but...you have to trust us."
Benson didn't miss a beat. "What?!"
"Morgan's gonna be fine."
"What-Skips, I demand you tell me what's going on!"
Skips only looked back at Rigby. "Rigby, Morgan's taking over Mordecai's personality. I need you to hold him back while I try to give him the antidote."
With this newfound determination in Skips' voice, Rigby nodded. Mordecai, meanwhile, was still kneeling on the ground, breathing heavily. He was shaking violently and he felt ready to throw up but he yelled out when he felt this sharp pain pierce his skull and all eyes went to him.
Bensons stared at him. "Wait. . ." Then his eyes went wide at the realization. ". . .Mordecai?" He whispered.
"Rigby, grab him!"
Rigby stepped forward and held Mordecais arms behind his back and the blue jay struggled out of his grip but Rigby kept a tight hold on him. "Dude, let go of me!"
Skips went up and he took the stopper off the top of the tube. With a shaking hand, he tilted it to Mordecais mouth (Rigby held his head up) and a drop fell in, making him go limp. But only for a second. Skips grabbed Mordecais other arm and with all his strength, he held onto him, Rigby holding the other arm. Mordecai looked up and when he saw Benson, he grabbed his hands, his expression going soft.
"Benson, please help me."
"What. . ."
"They want me to change back but I want to stay like this. As me."
"Benson, don't listen to her!" Rigby shouted but Bensons eyes were on Morgans.
"Please just-tell them. Convince them to let me be me and-and we'll be together. Just you and me. We'll make it work, I promise. All you have to do is tell them to stop all this." She finished quietly, folding her fingers around his.
Benson looked at his hands in Morgans then back at her face and for this brief moment, this image flashed in his mind and he felt himself smile but then just like that, his hands slipped from hers and he shook his head.
"I'm sorry but...I can't."
"But-but why? I thought you loved me."
Benson swallowed. ". . .I thought I did too."
Morgan could only stare at him and Skips saw it as his chance. With her distracted, he tilted the tube and gave her the rest of the antidote and just like that, Morgans eyes rolled back and she went limp, falling to the ground.
Skips and Rigby looked up at Benson but the gumball machine was focused on his hands. As the antidote began to set in, her clothes began to disappear.
A groan emitted from the blue jay and all three looked down as a hand went on the stair rail and the avian pulled himself up, his eyes slowly opening. He blinked a few times but Rigby was already smiling wide and so was Skips.
"R-Rigby?" Mordecai asked, his voice husky. But the tone was deep and kinda like a surfer. . .
"Dude, you're back!"
Skips nodded. "The potion worked."
As he began to register what'd happened, Mordecai started to smile. "Thank you Skips. How can I repay you?"
"Just don't go snooping around my house again, got it?" Skips asked sternly, but he was smiling.
Mordecai grinned. "Got it."
"Can someone please just tell me what the heck went on before?"
Mordecai whipped around to see Benson frowning at him but Mordecai couldn't help but step forward and hug him in thanks. Benson froze up at the contact but when he was suddenly reminded of the hugs before, he pulled Mordecai closer.
"I know Skips gave me the antidote but if it wasn't for you, I never would've changed back." Mordecai said softly into his cheek.
Benson smiled but as soon as the feeling'd come, it went, and he pushed Mordecai away. "Alright, that's enough. One of you better tell me what's going on right now or..."
Mordecai glanced between the two behind him and he turned back to Benson, rubbing his arm. "Well. . .you see. . ."
Benson held his head again and lowered himself onto the step, trying to get through it all.
"I know it's a lot to take in and I don't blame you for having this reaction but. . .everything's alright now, Benson." Mordecai finished, this weak smile coming across his lips.
And just like that, Benson shot up. "Alright?! Do you have any idea how much. . .how much this messed with me? I-I just. . ." Benson stopped. He didn't know whether to continue or burst into tears right then and there. He was just...confused and he didn't know what to think. At all.
"Benson, please. You've heard me out. The least you could do is understand-"
"So you've been here this entire time?" Benson choked out, sick in his throat. "You-You never left?"
Mordecai paused but then he slowly nodded. "Morgan was me. . ."
Benson once again lowered himself back on the step and he closed his eyes to think, holding his head and all three watched him, this silence growing between them.
"I think...I'm gonna go home." Benson finally said, but his voice sounded distant like his mind was elsewhere. Anywhere but home.
Mordecai swallowed but they watched him stand and go to the door. He grabbed his coat, his apartment keys already in the pocket, and Benson shrugged it on. The door opened then shut and the silence came back but this time, it was heavier and none of them felt like celebrating Mordecais return.
Mordecai couldn't sleep. Bensons face kept coming to mind and he groaned in frustration as he threw off the covers. Stepping onto the floorboards, he waited to hear Rigby's snores before tiptoeing out of the bedroom and going to Bensons office, where he plucked down the spare apartment keys Benson kept for emergencies.
Bensons bedroom door creaked open then shut and Mordecai quietly stepped over to the side of his bed. He could hear his heart pound in his ears and he watched Benson for another moment before reaching over and gently shaking him awake.
"Wha-"
"Benson, it's me." Mordecai whispered.
Benson blinked a few times then reached over to switch on the light. "M-Mordecai?" As it sowly registered, he frowned. "What're you doing here?"
"I-I couldn't sleep." He paused. "I can't stop thinking. . .about you."
Benson stopped and he looked at Mordecai in confusion. "What?"
"About what happened, I mean. Back at the Park with. . .me changing back and. . .your face. . .I. . ."
"This can't wait till tomorrow can it?"
Mordecai sighed. "No, I don't think it can." He sighed again as Benson looked at him, waiting. "Listen, the reason I came here is because. . .well, I just want to apologize. . .for putting you through all this, for lying to you, for just-well, everything."
Benson went quiet then it was his turn to sigh. "I should be the one apologizing."
"What? But I-"
"It was my fault. I let my emotions get to me and. . .honestly, I just haven't felt that feeling in a long time and having it again made me lose track of everything around me. If I wasn't so blind with love then I probably would've been able to figure out that it was you the entire time."
Mordecai smiled sadly and looked at the clock. 2am. Looking back at Benson, he saw his boss was giving him the same look.
"So. . .you're not in love with me anymore?"
Benson chuckled. "No, I'm not. But it's a different kind of love. And it always will be, don't worry."
Mordecai smiled. "Ditto."
The two of them sat in silence, looking at the other and catching each others eyes, laughing a bit, till Mordecai spoke up.
"You know, you're actually not a bad kisser." Mordecai felt his face heat up but he still smiled at Benson.
Benson went red and as he picked at the edges of his duvet, he muttered "Ditto."
Mordecais smile split into an amused grin and he shifted over and pulled Benson into a goodnight hug and Benson held him close as he'd done at the Park.
"You alright now, Benson?"
Benson smiled. "Yeah. I'm okay." He rested his head on Mordecai's shoulder and sighed. "Thanks Mordecai."
They stayed like that for a few minutes till Mordecai slowly let go and Benson moved back.
"Night Benson." Mordecai stood from the bed and Benson shifted back onto the mattress, pulling the covers back on himself.
"Night Mordecai." Benson switched off the light and Mordecai stepped away from the bed and went out the door. Benson waited to hear his apartment door open then shut before resting his head on the pillow and closing his eyes.
Mordecai managed to get back to the house without waking anyone up and as he slipped back into bed, he felt himself drift off to sleep, his mind at peace for the night.
Really, thank you so much. I've loved writing this story a lot and it was amazing to get this far with so much encouragement and support-aaaahhh ;u;
I've currently got a story in the works but it won't be posted till a long time due to school and life stuff (not to mention a Podcast I've got up and running on Tumblr at the moment ;D) so needless to say that I'll be pretty busy. But I'll still be here and writing ^_^
I hope you liked this chapter and this story and thanks so much for reading guys. Really. ❤️
