Chapter 5
Immediately Hiei ushered Kagome back to his room, easily avoiding everyone. Directing Kagome towards the stool in the corner he quickly locked the door. Kagome already had her shirt over her head as she let out a hiss of pain as her sleeve slid over her damaged arm. The appendage was swollen and already starting to darken to black.
Without hesitation, Hiei probed the limb with a practiced ease. "You're lucky, it's a clean break." Even as he spoke his figures continue probing, his frown deepening.
"I'm sensing a 'but' at the end of that statement," Kagome commented through clenched teeth. She hated broken bones, they always made her queasy.
He snorted even as a smirk formed on his lips. "But I'm going to have to set it. The bone isn't even close to where it should be." Red meant blue. "You're not going to puke." It wasn't a request but an order.
An uneasy giggle escaped her and her eyes flashed nervously. "I'll do my best, but you know me… he he… it's not the pain really it's the way the bones feel when they get put toget-" There was a sick cracking sound as Hiei took advantage of Kagome's ramblings. She hissed and turned a faint color of green as she leaned forward trying to hold her breakfast down.
Hiei's hand found its way to her back, gently rubbing circles even as he let out a chuckle. "Well you didn't puke." He gave her a few more moments to compose herself though. "Now we need to splint it. Your energy is to low to heal it without it."
Finally she sat up and nodded in agreement. "Speaking of my energy, you're cloaks just about used up. You're gonna have to replace it soon."
He nodded even as he moved to look out the window. This wasn't how the day was suppose to be. Those demons from the other dimension were suppose to in this world. They were merely manifestation of the Jewel for the purpose of training, nothing more. So how was it possible for them to be here?
"Has the Jewel spoken to you?"
"No. But even if it did we'd only be left with more questions."
"True, but at least then we'd have something." Finally Hiei's gaze drifted to Kagome. They didn't have much time left. Already he could sense Kurama making his way towards them. "Lets fix that cloak."
Even as he spoke those words, his youki began down his right arm. The dragon's red eyes seemed to gleam with delight as its body began to sway in time with Hiei's youki. It took less then a half a second for the energy to spiral off the arm and into Kagome's body. For several heart beats Hiei's darker energy was visible as Kagome's energy flared, a sea of blue and twisting neon pink, before his darker energy latched onto to the pink and cloaking it.
There was a larger portion pink then Hiei had ever tried covering before and he felt a gentle tingle that came from touching Kagome's holy energy. An unexpected shiver ran through him as his body relaxed – a side affect of the cloak.
Kagome rested her hand on his cheek, capturing his attention. "We can't sleep yet, Spitfire we have thing to do," she stated with a warm smile.
Nodding once, he leaned into her hand with a sigh. "Just don't use anymore youki."
A knock at the door brought them back to the present.
Souta felt… something.
Both him and Hitomi had taken the day off so they could catch up on the sleep that they'd missed the night before. They'd both stay up later then expected as he'd finally told his wife about his sister. He hadn't hid anything. He had talked so much that they'd fallen asleep still fully clothed in their day clothes on top of their bed.
There had been such a great relief, like a heavy anchor being removed from his chest, as he had talked. He had hoped the feeling would last.
Now though, as he looked down at Hitomi, who snuggled into his chest, using his chest as a pillow, something felt off. Glancing at the clock the neon numbers read 7:32am. He only been asleep for about 3 hours but even so he was fully awake.
Carefully he untangled himself from Hitomi and slipped from their bed without waking her. Checking the rest of the apartment Souta found nothing amidst that would explain his odd feeling. Returning to his bedroom he rested at the foot of the bed unable to sleep.
Perhaps an earthquake was coming? It wasn't uncommon for him to sense them before they hit.
His eyes wandered towards his closet where his wooden staff was stored. He felt a need, nearly burning in intensity, to grab the worn weapon.
Running his hands over his face, he nearly growled before standing and moving to the closet. Opening it, he eyed the contents. Several boxes where neatly stacked against one side all the way to the shoe organizer, which was loaded with mostly Hitomi's shoes. On the opposite side of that was a single tall box wedged carefully between the organizer and the wall. With a little maneuvering, he finally unwedged the box and returned to the bed.
Laying the box across his lap, he wiped the dust from it before carefully removing the lid. Sitting in a cushion of white stuffing, was a sturdy cherry wood staff. It was covered with carvings that he'd had costume carved into the wood. The wood itself was polished to a shine and fire hardened for durability.
It was a masterpiece and he'd spent a small fortune on it as an adolescent. He was also well trained in its usage too, having started classes with it before his sister had fully returned to from the past.
Now, as his fingers traced the designed wood Souta found himself relaxing some. Whatever this feeling was it was no earthquake. Never had he felt the need to be armed for an earthquake. Whatever was happening it was not natural.
A screech, inhuman and loud, suddenly filled the air. It was followed by the sound of rock on rock and the ground trembled violently.
Hitomi sat up suddenly, eyes wide in confusion and fear. "What was that?" she asked, her voice abnormally loud in the sudden quiet that had followed such a noise.
Souta couldn't answer her for he had no explanation. Instead, he stood, his staff gripped tightly in his hand, and moved toward the window for a look. Just as he reached the window, screams began filling the air. They were pained filled, scared, confused screams that vibrated through him and caused his teeth to rattle.
Almost hesitantly, he brushed the curtain aside and stared out at the village. Smoke rose from only a block away where he knew a small apartment complex had been. Now there was nothing blocking his view of the sky.
"What's going on? Souta?" Hitomi had climbed to the edge of the bed, sitting on her knees as she tried to look around Souta.
He merely shook his head having no words to explain. "We have to get out of here." Backing away from the window he stood for a second more before turning towards Hitomi. Seeing that she hadn't moved but to stare at him questionably, he snapped. "Now!"
She jumped then, climbing off the bed and to her feet. "Why? What's going on?" The questions flowed through her even as she moved to grab her tennis shoes from the closet.
"I don't know, we just have to get out of here," was Souta's only reply as he stuffed his feet into his own shoes. Quickly tying the laces, he grabbed Hitomi's hand before pulling her towards the front door.
He could already hear the stampede of people in the hall as others made their own escape. Opening the door, screams suddenly erupted from farther down the hall and people began rushing away from the exit. Panic, suddenly richer and somehow tangible, swept through the crowd as a screech pierced through the air nearly splitting Souta's eardrums.
He watched as people where suddenly flying backwards through the air by strings. Movement on the ceiling suddenly caught his attention and his head turned upwards to track the movement. Spiders, easily the size of large dogs and uncountable in numbers, ran back and forth, snatching people with their webs and cocooning them.
"Souta! Look out!"
Hitomi's voice, loud and fearfully suddenly brought him back from his study. A web flew towards his face with speed that made it look like a flash of yellow in the hallway lights. Instinctively, he flung himself backwards, smashing into Hitomi and falling on top of her. She let out gasp of surprise and pain, the winded knocked from her lungs by Souta's heavier weight but otherwise didn't move.
The movement, instinctive as it was, was unnecessary. The talismans on each side of the door glowed a bright pink and a barrier appeared blocking the web and obliterated it.
Sitting up slowly, Souta glanced at Hitomi. "I told you those would come in handy." Kagome had made several of them before her disappearance and had given them to him and their mother.
Hitomi could only nod, her face pale and her breath shaky. Being more of the futuristic, she hadn't wanted them hung but eventually giving in once she had discover they had been from his sister.
"Did your sister give you anything else?" The talismans' protected their threshold from danger, they were the reason no one had rushed their door or at least that's what Hitomi guessed. If the talismans did worked, wouldn't other things her sister-in-law made work too?
Souta was still for a minute, his eyes searching before a shaky smile appeared on his lips. "Come on." Climbing to his feet he pulled Hitomi behind him and back to the bedroom.
Throwing open the closet doors, he pulled out a couple boxes. He slid a box in front of his wife before propping his own box open. "We're looking for a small white box, like a pencil box. It'll have some writing on it."
Hitomi paused for only a moment. Never before had she been in those boxes and she wished that she had time to actually look at contents. However she couldn't help it when her eyes caught glimpse of different news paper clipping. They were all related to the Higurashi Shrine and Kagome.
Finding nothing of the described items she slid the box away from her. Before she had a chance to say anything another box was pushed in front of her. Glance at Souta, who was already buried in another box, she saw determination etched in his eyes and face along with something she would call devotion.
The tale he had told her last night had been outlandish at best and if she hadn't seen what she had seen last night she would have thought him crazed and possibly obsessive now that she was seeing the contents of the boxes. Now, as screams filled the air she understood why he had been so elusive about his sister.
"I'm sorry. I understand why now." She watched as Souta looked up at her, confusion written all over him. She gestured to the boxes. "If you would have showed me this stuff even a few days ago I would have thought you were crazy."
He smiled softly with a nodded. "We'll have time to discuss this later, right now we have to find that box."
She nodded, offering a watery smile before popping open her box. This box was filled with odds and ends. Tiny trinkets that were home made that reminded Hitomi of her own mother's hope chest. She was just about to set this box aside too when something caught her eye. At the bottom, stacked under some colored pictures, something glowed a soft pink. Carefully, she moved the papers revealing a small box. Her hands shook as she gently picked it up.
The box was warm to the touch and she found herself unable to stop herself from lifting the lid. The light coming from inside was blinding and she was vaguely aware of Souta moving beside her.
Her eyes adjusted surprisingly quickly and she was able to make out a stack of papers. The top one had a some markings on it that she couldn't understand but somehow, somewhere inside of her knew the simple markings held power.
Glancing at Souta, she felt her own lips turn up into a smile that matched his.
The sound of a explosion interrupted there moment as a spider crashed through the living room wall. Quickly they were on feet, neither hesitated as they darted passed the stun spider as it shook its large body. The front door was blocked so they dashed to the kitchen where the fire escape was. Luckily they were only on the third floor and they made it to the ground without any hassle.
The street was oddly quiet. Webs, like fine silk, draped across over street signs and from roof tops like some cheesy Halloween scare house. Cocoons were scattered in random clusters here and there.
