Chapter 3
I wake up to my alarm clock that reads 7:45. SHOOT! I have to train the initiates at 8:00! I hurry out of bed, get training clothes on, brush my teeth, and fix my hair. 7:50. Perfect. I make my way to the training room and start setting up the targets and guns. Today is shooting and fighting. Eric is probably going to kill them today...If only Amar were still here. He was tough, but he didn't try to basically kill the initiates! Eric is crazy. That is that. The initiates start to fill in and they line up. I put my instuctor face on and begin speaking.
"The first thing you will learn today is how to shoot a gun. The second thing is how to win a fight." I say sternley. As I talk I put a gun in each of the initiates hands, though not looking at them. When I gave Tris hers, I felt someting. Not the gun or her hand, but sort of a weird feeling, in the pit of my stomach. I've never felt that before, but it wasn't exactly a bad feeling. Whatever it was I shake it off and continue talking. "Thankfully if you are here, you already know how to get off a moving train, so I don't need to teach you that." I take a quick look at the initates faces. Most of them look pretty shocked, but Tris looks like she expected it. I stop staring and keep speaking, "Initiation is divided into three stages. We will measure your progress and rank you according to your performance in each stage. The stages are not weighed equally in determining your final rank, so it is possible. though difficult, to drastically improve your rank over time." I ramble about what we will be doing. I take a peak at Tris and see her non-surprised look go to a nervous and worried one. Stop staring at her Tobias, what's gotten into you?! I keep talking, "Therefore each stage of initiation is intended to prepare you in a different way. The first stage is primarily physical; the second, primarily emotional; the third, primarily mental." I take a pause. Then the Candor boy speaks up.
"But what...what does firing a gun have to do with...bravery?" He yawns through his words. Okay, he needs a wake-up call. I go up to him and push the barrel of the gun right to his forehead. You can see his relaxed face change immediatley once the cool metal hit it. After that you can see that he is completely awake. He freezes with his eyes wide and lips parted, his yawn disappered. I snap at him, "Wake. Up. You are holding a loaded gun, you idiot, act like it." Once I lower my gun his eyes turn cold. He looks like he wants to say something, but he doesn't and his face goes red, so I continue, "And to answer your question...you are far less likely to soil your pants and cry for your mother if you're prepared to defend yourself." I stop walking once I reach the end of the row, turn on my heel amd continue, "This is also information you may need later in stage one. So, watch me. I face the target wall. I stand in front a wooden square with those three painted red circles that I know so well from practicing. I hold the gun in my hands and move my feet apart. I remember how Amar taught me. Inhale. Aim. Exhale. Fire. The initiates turn away from the loud noise but turn back to see that the bullet went straight through the center.
I watch the initiates and most of them had hit the target, except for Tris, who is talking to an Erudite boy. They talk for a minute and she hits the target with a look of satisfaction on her face as she turns towards him again. A few rounds later, she hits the middle of the target. For some reason...I feel proud of her. I send the initiates to lunch and go sit by my own friends aswell. I sit down next to Zeke once I get my food. I don't know why, but I start to think of Tris. Why is she in my thoughts so much? Why am I thinking of that blonde hair all the time? And her eyes...I didn't realize I started to drift off until Zeke is clapping infront of my face.
"Four! Four? Hello..." Zeke says still clapping.
"Huh?" I ask.
"What's wrong? You're daydreaming-" He gasps. "Are you thinking of someone, Four?" A smile spreading across his face. Oh god Zeke...
"No Zeke.." I tell him trying to sound bored.
"Yeah I know that look Four, you're thinking of a girl! Who is she?" He says with the smile on his face getting even bigger.
"Wha-no.." I stutter, my face getting red.
"IS THE FAMOUS FOUR BLUSHING?!" He practically screams.
"NO!" Is all I manage to get out before I leave the room with Zeke yelling behind me,
"COME TO ME WHEN YOU WANT ADVICE!" He shouts with a wink. I just ignore him and lead the initiates to the fighting room.
Once the initiates line up infront of the punching bags I begin speaking, "As I said this morning, next you will learn how to fight. The purpose of this is to prepare you to act; to prepare your body to respond to threats and challenges-which you will need, if you intend to survive life as a Dauntless." Nobody interrupts so I continue, "We will go over technique today, and tomorrow you will start to fight eachother, so I recommend that you pay attention. Those who don't learn fast will get hurt. After I name and demonstrate some different punches, they start to practice. I watch all the initiates, just making a fewnotes on each of them, but when I stop in front of Tris, I feel the need to examine every part of her. I look at her from head to toe and say, "You don't have much muscle, which means you're better off using your knees and elbows. You can put more power behind them." In that moment I did the stupidest thing I could think of. I press my hand to her stomach and suddenly forgot what i was going to say. I feel that thing in my stomach I felt earlier. That tingling sensation. She looks up at me with her blue eyes, wide as saucers and I remember what I was going to say. "Never forget to keep the tension here." After that i just dismissed them for dinner, and went to my apartment.
So how did you guys like that? Let me know if I'm to OOC...Until next time!
