Children of the Sun and Moon
Prologue
"You'll have to pick up the pace if you want to keep up with me!"
"Who said I wanted to keep up with you? I like the pace i'm going at right now anyways, so you can just stay quiet."
"Awe, are you upset that I kicked your butt today at training?"
"No! You won unfairly anyways, I'm pretty sure there's still dirt in my eyes that will eventually be stuck there and irritate them for the rest of my life; and it'll be all your fault!"
A twinkling laugh was the first reply to this.
"We're supposed to use our surroundings to the fullest, not my fault you didn't see it coming!"
"It was a dirty trick, literally!"
A scoff.
"It worked though, didn't it? Job well done on my part, in my opinion."
Eye-roll.
"Whatever."
Jogging to a stop for a small break, two girls stood facing each other, one with a pout on her face and the other trying to hold back a snigger. One would think that they were best friends, maybe sisters from the way they acted but the truth of the matter was that not only were they sisters, they were twins.
But they didn't look like it, mainly for the fact their hair, their natural hair mind you, was colored completely opposite from the other. One had golden blonde hair that turned to a contrasting dark brown, while the other had her hair coloring flipped. But if one looked closely, they'd notice the similarities of their heart shaped faces, finely arched eyebrows, almond shaped hazel eyes, and button noses.
And though their personalities contrasted each other, they balanced out without effort.
"Awe don't be like that, you know you love me. We'll take a look at it once we get home, just come on."
She started jogging away but paused when she noticed the other girl wasn't following.
"Solstice." She whined, pouting. "You know I didn't mean for it to be so bad!"
Solstice, finally giving in, rolled her eyes for the second time in the span of not even 2 minutes.
"Yeah, yeah."
"You know, if you keep rolling your eyes like that they're going to get stuck."
"That's just a myth, Luna."
Luna narrowed her eyes and looked around in mock suspicion. "Or is it?"
They laughed and continued walking to their home, a cozy and quaint little cottage in the woods. It was the only home they had ever known, containing years and years of memories of their childhood. At 17 years of age, they still weren't familiar with the outside and were only just contemplating what they would do when they would have to leave.
Only, they wouldn't have to worry about that for much longer.
See, what they didn't know and what you're about to find out is that they didn't belong there. On Earth.
They belonged to another world entirely, one they would soon find to love and hate simultaneously. One that held their true family.
And the greatest enemy they and their world had ever come to know.
The fact that they were from there explained a few things, including their hair coloring.
But since they were blissfully unaware of that at the time, and since we'll get to that later, they merely walked, or skipped in Luna's case, into their homely little cottage.
Luna plopped down in front of the TV, turning it on and tapping her Xbox 360 to life, giggling quietly when it 'Ping!'ed on.
Sol walked up behind Luna, dropping a nutty Hershey bar into her lap before walking up the stairs to their shared bathroom to take a shower.
After getting undressed and laughing when she heard her sister yell out a few choice swear words, she stepped into the shower and let the steaming water massage her back and run through her blonde-brown hair before reaching for the apple scented shampoo and conditioner.
Downstairs, Luna threw her controller down after getting stabbed in the back and being demoted to the last gun for the 5th time in a row on Call of Duty: Ghost. She huffed and opened the disc tray, popping in the familiar title of Assassin's Creed: 3 with a lazy grin.
"Long time, no see Connor, how's my favorite assassin?"
She smiled as she started a new game, having already completed the game 4 times and not minding another go at it from the beginning.
"Maybe I can learn a few more moves for tree climbing if I look closer..." she mumbled to herself, thinking about the training she and Sol had been partaking in for the past 7 years while absentmindedly fiddling with the controls, scowling when the too familiar face of Haytham Kenway came into view.
"How Edward had a Templar son and Assassin grandson, I'll never know."
After half an hour of playing through the game with barely any effort, and purposely getting into fights with random guards, familiar footsteps sounded as Sol walked down the stairs, hair damp and face clean of the dirt that had covered it in spots after their little skirmish together.
After pausing her game and leaving behind a forgotten and partially eaten Hershey bar on the wooden floor, she sauntered over to Sol, who was rummaging through the fridge for something to eat.
Sol smiled as she pulled out her snack, and began munching happily on the juicy red apple in her hand after rinsing it off with water. She licked at the juices that ran down the side of her mouth before finally wiping them away with the back of her hand when she couldn't reach them with her tongue.
Luna laughed at Sol's dreamy sigh, which caused the blonde-brunette to mock her laughter and walk away, still munching on her favorite fruit.
Luna chuckled quietly at this and moved to open the fridge when she noticed the back door in the kitchen was unlocked and partially open. She paused with a frown on her face and her eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.
'Who is inside the house.'
Closing the door and locking it with soft click, she looked at Sol who had seen the entire thing and stopped eating her snack.
Setting the half eaten apple on the counter, she moved behind Luna up the stairs silently, checking the 3 rooms on the right while Luna checked the two on the left until they reached the door at the end of the hall, their Father's study.
Luna motioned for Sol to back up just in case and slowly pushed the slightly open door until it was completely open. A hand shot out from the dimly lit room and Luna gave out a cry before grabbing the hand that had grabbed her shoulder and using it to flip the person over her and onto the floor.
"Oh my gosh, Daddy!"
"Luna, what the hell?!"
"It's not my fault! I panicked and then he just- and I- You would've done the same! Actually no you wouldn't have, you probably would've-"
"Luna! Our father is on the floor!"
"Oh right."
Grabbing him by his arms, they eased him up from the ground to stand and he gave a soft laugh while rubbing his lower back, which had made impact first with the hardwood floor.
"Dad you of all people should know better than to surprise either of us like that! Me especially! Why would you do that when you knew that we didn't expect you to come home until tomorrow?!" Their father laughed, and stood up with their help; he bent forward and then back and then forward again until his back let out a satisfying 'pop!' to which Luna and Sol cringed at.
"I wanted to surprise you, obviously. I didn't think that you would flip me over; but knowing that you have quick reflexes to defend yourself and the house is relieving in a way. Nice job by the way, there was no hesitation and it was a clean move."
Luna chuckled and rubbed her neck sheepishly. "I learned from the best." He laughed, ruffling her hair affectionately before wrapping an arm around Sol's shoulders, who was still looking at him worriedly.
"Well, having you two around will never be boring, that I know too well."
They all chuckled together until his stomach rumbled.
"Hmm, I'm hungry."
And with that, he jogged down the stairs while whistling a random tune, leaving the twins standing there with incredulous looks.
"Well then..."
"Yeah."
"...I'm gonna shower now that all of...that... is over."
"There should be some hot water left."
"Thanks, though I won't be long, unlike some people."
Sol stuck her tongue out with a small smile and jogged down the stairs as well, hearing Luna close the door to their large, shared room. Shortly after she sat down on her bean bag with her laptop open, drawing tablet on her lap, and tablet pen in hand, she heard the tell-tale sounds of the shower beginning to run. Moments later, muffled music could heard, and she could faintly make it out as "Ocean" by Tonight Alive.
10 songs of different genres later, the shower stopped, and the music was cut off mid-way through Sol's favorite song, Mirror by Kat Dahlia, making her huff and pout in unhappiness.
"Right before my favorite part too..." She mumbled to herself in disappointment.
Their father walked out of the kitchen with a pear in hand, taking large bites out of it as he plopped down onto the couch and laid back. She heard him heave out a long sigh before things got quiet again. 10 minutes later, as a damp-haired Luna was descending the stairs whilst humming a tune to herself, Sol could hear the soft snores of their father and smiled softly as she stood up and went to the closet to grab a spare blanket. Luna was brushing back a few stray hairs that laid across his forehead when she returned and they both laughed lowly.
"He must've been dead tired for him to fall asleep on the couch." Luna said gently as she watched Sol lay the blanket on top of him.
"I bet. He seemed kind of off too when we asked him why he came home early."
They stared at each other for a few seconds before deciding to brush it off and continue as though the thought wasn't on the back of their minds.
"I'm gonna get started on some early dinner. Wanna help?"
Sol contemplated for a moment and let out a huff. "Do I have to?" Luna's reply was a mischief filled smile and a chuckle; "Since you asked, yes."
With the combined peeling and chopping skills of Sol, Luna set to work on making a simple, hearty potato stew. As Sol prepped the veggies that needed to be cut, Luna boiled some water and peeled potatoes.
They continued their comforting and relaxing work for some time and almost 45 minutes later, the pots were clean, the left over stew was stored, and three neat, steaming, and delicious smelling bowls were ready. Luna put their father's bowl in the microwave to keep it warm while Sol set their bowls down on the small wooden dinner table, pulling out chairs to sit and eat.
They were almost halfway done with the stew when the groggy figure of André, their father, stepped into the kitchen with a hunched back and sleep filled eyes, grabbing the stew out of the microwave and walking out the kitchen with a small hum of thanks as he took sips of the warm broth. They stared until he was out the open door way and let out small girlish giggles, Luna almost snorting up some of the stew along with them.
They laughed even harder at that and settled down a few moments later, bright smiles on their faces as they continued to eat in peace.
As they finished and leaned back in their chairs, Luna stared at her younger twin with a gentle smile. Sol gave her a look of confusion and almost pouted. "What? Stop staring at me! If there's something on my face, tell me; it's rude to stare you know." Luna laughed the blonde-brunette before smiling somewhat crookedly.
"I was just thinking."
Sol looked at her, asking without words what was on her mind.
The brunette winked, grabbing a sticky note quickly from a nearby drawer and scribbling hastily on it before walking over to André's again sleeping form and lightly placing it on his forehead.
Solstice stayed rooted in place in utter confusion until her older twin beckoned her to follow up the stairs. She changed into something light but training acceptable like told and without another word, watched as Luna slipped out the window and to the tree next to it, laughing as she took the familiar weather and boot worn path of the thick tree branches. They traveled along the branches in the forest, familiar with the wildlife surrounding them. That was it.
That was home.
Amongst the trees, in the grass, with the wildlife.
It called to their very beings.
Luna had once made a joke about them being Elves to Sol and André, to which Sol laughed at but André simply waved off with a chuckle.
If only she knew.
They went along the worn path until they reached a familiar meadow, their sanctuary. They had once found the place while exploring and goofing off as per usual, and since then it became their little get away. They often spent their evenings in the meadow, lazing the day away and playing in the pond directly beneath one of the large branches of the willow tree. The pond deepened in the center, they knew that much when Luna decided to catapult herself into the body of water from the tree, but they did not know to what extent and decided it wasn't worth trying to find out.
Around the mystical, ancient tree and glistening, fresh water pond were ush grasses and bushes of delicious berries that they would regularly collect and use to make jam. It was an often sight to see a small herd of deer grazing in the area, but there were none to be seen when they arrived so they had no qualms against laughing loudly and chasing one another in a game of tag. Sol climbed nimbly up the tree, giggling madly as she risked a peek over her shoulder to see Luna having no trouble keeping up with her.
They reached the top of the tree in a matter of seconds, and perched on the highest of the branches which was nestled perfectly with a great view of the surrounding trees and orange horizon.
They sat for a while in silence, watching the sunset as the final rays warmed their skin. Luna turned her head slightly and stared at Sol with a small smile, her bright hazel eyes shining with emotions. Sol gave her a glance, her perplexed expression clear.
"You're doing it again, Lu." Luna blinked and tilted her head in confusion before asking, "Doing what?"
"That staring thing, you were doing it at the house too."
Luna smiled brightly before closing her eyes and leaning her head back, letting the smile fall to a small tilt of her lips. "I was just thinking."
"Of?"
A twitch of her lips.
"How lucky I am. How lucky we are. How wonderful life is." She paused and opened her eyes to stare at her younger twin. "How much I love you, and how happy I am that I'm your twin."
Sol blushed slightly before giving her older sister's arm a nudge with her shoulder. "Don't get all mushy and emotional with me now. How hard did you hit your head during training?"
Their laughter ran out throughout the trees, filling the air with sounds of mirth and joy. They leaned against each other and watched as the almost entirely set before standing. When Sol made to move down, Luna lightly grabbed her twin's shoulde rto grab her attention.
"What's up?"
"I need you to promise something."
"Anything."
"Promise me, just like I'll promise you, that no matter what happens, no matter what changes, whether something happen to me or you, or heaven forbid, either of us die; promise that you'll not change, and you'll keep my memory alive, just like I will to you. Promise that we'll stay together not through body but through mind and spirit. And when we face some of the hardest times of our lives, we'll face them together, and get through it. Promise me."
She held out her pinky, watching as her younger twin's eyes flashed with emotions as she curled her own around the outstretched one.
"I promise."
I promise.
Alright! Thanks to anyone and everyone who read this! This is just a sort of test to see if anyone is interested in the story, and if so I'll keep writing! I already have a couple of chapters done, but I'm still revising. Any who, if you enjoyed it please feel free to drop a review and let me know if you want more!
xoxo,
Faolen
Edit: I hope everyone who read the original isn't too upset with all the change! I just figured that the original prolouge was a litte cliche and just not as good as I thought it was originally. To everyone who's new to the story, I hope you enjoyed this! There'll be much more to come
