Epilogue: Into the Storm

Mystic Falls- Six months later

The skies were black and crackling with lightning when a wolf pack sprinted through the trees, leading by a large gray wolf and a slender brown wolf.

The brown wolf's eyes burned a bright gold in the darkness, like the others, as she lead the way in front of the other Alpha.

Thunder rumbled across the sky, but that didn't mask the sound of howls echoing in the distance, a wolf pack calling to the other.

The female Alpha changed her course, moving in the direction of the howls, her long strides eating up the distance effortlessly.

And at the peak of a foothill stood a small pack of wolves, waiting for the group lead by the female. In the front stood a large timber wolf, who stood to attention when the female approached.

Lightning struck, lighting up the entire area, and when it dimmed again, a tall woman stood in the place of the brown wolf.

Annabelle Davis-Mikaelson assessed the smaller pack in front of her before turning her dark gray gaze to the leader, who shifted as well.

"Hey, Belle," Patrick said, shoving the wet hair from his eyes.

Anna smiled a little. "Hi, Patrick. It's been a while."

"How are the twins?"

That smile turned affectionate. "Growing like weeds. But that's not why I'm here."

Patrick sighed deeply. "I know. You've heard the rumors."

"I don't want rumors, Patrick. I want facts. Are they back?"

Patrick's expression was grim. "Yes."

Annabelle's eyes flashed gold again, making the other wolves shift uneasily. After all, the female Hybrid was well known…everywhere.

"The vampires will stand behind you," Patrick informed her. "Marcel has been rounding up reinforcements."

"Where are they now?"

"Waiting for your command in the Quarter," Patrick stated, gesturing in the general direction of New Orleans.

"How many are there?" she asked.

"Enough."

"And the witches?"

"More."

Annabelle looked up at the stormy sky and her expression was furious, like she was cursing whatever power controlled this storm.

"What should we do, Belle?" Patrick asked, waiting.

"Move your wolves closer to town. We have more coming in and we'll need the space."

Patrick nodded, before glancing at her. "Are you ready for what comes next?"

"I'm ready," she said.

But Patrick thought he heard her hesitant for a brief moment, and her eyes flash with worry before determination hardened her features.

Alone, Annabelle walked through the thick, damp forest silently, trailing her hands along the tree trunks.

She had been tracking this same, hauntingly familiar scent for weeks now, and it made her wolf stand on edge.

Her bare feet were covered with mud and leaves, but she didn't notice.

Anger and fear pulsed through her veins, driving her deeper into the woods and through the storm that seemed to never end.

And then she heard it, the distant chanting and the smell of burning herbs.

Coming into a clearing, she froze, hiding partially behind a large tree.

At the bottom of the small hill stood a large gathering of people, witches of all shapes and sizes, performing a ritual that Annabelle did not recognize.

Out of the crowd emerged a familiar face, whose expression was set and grim, dressed in all black while carrying a wickedly sharp, curved blade with marking etched into the blade.

"When we find the Hybrid, we will kill her. Then we will kill those things she calls children," Sophie Devereux said in a voice that was not quite her own, eyes black as pitch.

Annabelle backed away, melting into the shadows and darkness, her eyes slowly fading from human gray to wolf gold.

Things were about to change yet again.

Lines were being drawn for the battle that had yet to come, between the wolves, the witches, and the vampires. And in the middle stood a family of Hybrids, who had the power to tip the balance between what was won and what was lost.

And the decision rested between the possessed witch queen and the female Alpha Hybrid, two powerful forces that would eventually bring it all to an end.
