In another life, Harvey Dent is a cactus. A prickly pear cactus that is round on one side and slightly bent on another side. He finds it slightly amusing. He wonders if the others have obtained their humanity as well.
Bruce Wayne is the owner. When Bruce bought the cactus, he did not know that Harvey almost cried out of joy. But Bruce dosen't remember. In this life, he is just a spoilt child of billionaire parents. Harvey soon realises that Bruce is not as idiotic as he seems. He talks about dreams and aspirations and Harvey cries silent tears when Bruce tells him that he has whatever disease it is and is about to die.
It was a normal day when Bruce brought a tank and a single white goldfish in it. Harvey notices the black rings around the fish's bulging eyes and a circle of red around it's mouth. He wanted to laugh but he remembers that he is a cactus.
He sees a flash of recognition in the fish's eyes and knew that the Joker was still in there somewhere. He blew bubbles at Harvey in the tank, and Harvey finds himself smiling inwardly. He sees Bruce talking to the fish and himself about to die and sees the pain in Joker's eyes.
Rachel Dawes is a hamster. A happy little hamster that spun around on the exercise wheel and slurped water and crunched her food loudly in the middle of the night. Harvey thought that she was lucky for not remembering anything, and the Joker just blew bubbles at her.
The sparrow that settles on the window seel is Alfred. He notices the Joker and tries to peck at him but Bruce stops him. Alfred looks hurt, but happy again when Bruce feeds him bread crumbs. The old bird kept coming everyday until one day in spring. Bruce cried that day.
Harvey finds it strange that he has civil conversations with the Joker now. He is happy that at least there is someone else in his situation. Then the Joker blows bubbles at him and Harvey couldn't be bothered to yell at him. How do they even communicate? Harvey asks the Joker and he says that he is just happy that they can. As always, Rachel spins around the wheel, annoying them both.
The Joker tells him things, of how Bruce Wayne is Batman and stories about how he got his scars, not caring for the fact that he has no scars now, just scales.
Harvey cries the day Bruce died. They all knew it was coming, but tries to keep it out of their minds. At least Alfred left before seeing this, Harvey thought. Even Joker-fish seemed sad. Hamster-Rachel just sits there oblivious of the world and how things have changed.
They got rid of Rachel first, selling her to a pet shop. Harvey talked with the Joker like he has never talked before because he knows that both of them would be separated soon. They sold the Joker to another pet shop and gave Harvey to a botanical garden.
It was years later when he saw Bruce again. Some recluse kid brought him and takes Harvey everwhere. It was in a damp cave when he sees Bruce. Bruce looks at him knowingly. Harvey smiles at him. Another bat flies up to Bruce and nudges him. So this is where the Joker went.
How fitting that Batman is an actual bat now. Harvey thought. He went to sleep and never woke up.
In the next life, Harvey is a writer. A writer that lives with his three cats, Rachel, Bruce and Joker. Rachel still dosen't remember, and Bruce and Joker fights all the time. He writes a book about them, and watches it come to life on the big screen as he shares his popcorn with his cats. Bruce and Joker snuggles against each other and Rachel curls up next to him. Harvey smiles and everything feels just right.
