Author's Note: I know it's been a long time coming to update this story. Two years to be exact, but I was stuck with writer's block. However, I decided to force myself to write this chapter so I could final update this story and I finally managed to do it. I do want to thank icicle. for reviewing the story and leaving me a message, wanting an update for the story. Thanks to her this chapter probably wouldn't have been posted. Anyway, please leave reviews and let me know what you thought!

John could only stand there, watching in horror as his maid and Carly were held at gunpoint. He looked between the two women, not knowing what to do. He didn't want to see either of them get hurt, but if he made a decision, he would lose someone…

"Make your decision, Mr. Smith." Jenny sneered, tightening her grip on Martha. John couldn't even speak, the pressure of deciding eating at him.

Baines smiled evilly. "Perhaps if that human heart breaks, the Time Lord will emerge." He said, a sadistic smirk on his face now.

Out of nowhere, there was a hushed whisper. "Time Lord."

Baines' eyes widened. "It's him!"

Using that distraction, Carly managed to get out of Clarke's tight grip and tossed herself at John, grabbing onto him.

John held her to him tightly, stroking her head as her body shook against him and her head buried into his chest. He breathed in relief. She was safe, and back into his arms.

Martha used the distraction too, but she grabbed the gun and now had Jenny captive, pressing the gun against her head now. "One more move, and I shoot." She threatened as Carly finally lifted her head from John's chest, watching, but both of them keeping a tight hold onto one another.

"Oh, the maid is full of fire!" Though it sounded like a compliment, Baines didn't look impressed.

"And you can shut up!" Martha fired the gun up into the ceiling and Carly's face was back in John's chest, flinching, not liking the sound of gun shots.

"Careful Son of Mine." Clarke warned. "This is all for you, so you can live forever."

"Shoot you down!"

Martha glared at him, pushing the barrel of the gun harder against Jenny's temple. "Try it. We'll die together."

"Would you really pull the trigger? Looks scared." Baines mocked.

She rolled her eyes. "Scared and holding a gun. It's a good combination." She cocked a brow at him. "You wanna risk it?"

Baines looked towards John, who was still holding onto Carly and looking completely out of his depth, and he lowered the gun. No, he did not.

"Doctor, Charlene, get everybody out." Martha ordered calmly, still holding onto her gun. "There's a door on the side. It's over there. Go now!"

"But Martha…" Carly tried to protest as they stood there in decisive.

Martha interrupted her. "No, both of you need to go! I mean it, GO!"

That was when Joan showed up, taking control. "Do what she says. Everybody out now." She began to usher everybody out of the room. "Don't argue, Mr. Jackson. They're mad. That's all we need to know. Susan, Mr. Cooper, outside, all of you!"

The villagers exited the hall through the front door, screaming with no idea what was going on.

A boy named Latimer hesitated to move, that is until John turned to him, still keeping a tight hold on Carly, and spoke to him.

"Move yourself, boy." He said, "Back to the school, quickly."

Latimer rushed out of there.

Martha spoke then, looking at John and Carly. "You guys too. Go on. Just shift."

"But Martha." Carly protested. "We can't just leave you here."

"You can, and you will." Martha said seriously. "I got it from here." Her gaze shifted to John. "Mr. Smith, I think you should escort your lady to safety, don't you?"

John said nothing for a moment. "Come on, Carly." He told her quietly as he ushered her out of the back door.

Carly wanted to protest again, scared for Martha but she didn't, so she grudgingly left with John, but no without looking back at John's maid one last time. She hoped this wasn't the last time she saw her.

With everyone out, it left Martha alone with the aliens. She still had the gun pressed against Jenny's head. It wasn't for long as Martha finally shoved Jenny away from her and she glared at the group while she wrapped her other hand around the handle of the gun, pointing it at Baines.

"Don't try anything." Martha warned. "I'm warning you, or sonny boy gets it." She wasn't lying. Yeah, she had never shot a gun before, but she wasn't going to let anyone hurt the Doctor or Charlene. That was never going to happen.

Baines didn't look scared at all; he was only amused as he smirked at Martha. "She's almost brave, this one."

The family advanced towards her. Jenny smirked, titling her head to the side menacingly.

"I should have taken her form. So much more fun. So much spirit."

Martha started to back away, her hands still gripping the gun. "What happened to Jenny? Is she gone?"

"She is consumed." Jenny answered casually. "Her body's mine."

"You mean she's dead." Martha said through gritted teeth.

Her smirk widened. "Yes. And she went with precious little dignity. All – aah – screaming."

Out of nowhere, Martha felt someone grab her from behind and she bit back a scream, managing to look back only to see it was a scarecrow that grabbed her.

"Get the gun!"

Martha just let the scarecrow take the gun as she ducked under its arm and ran outside. She got out there and Carly, John, and Joan were all still out there. Martha groaned under her breath.

"Don't just stand there, move!" She demanded. "God, both of you are rubbish at being humans! Come on!" Her hand grabbed onto Carly's and she ran with the blonde as John and Joan followed behind them.

Carly was out of breath by the time they had made it to the school. She released Martha's hand as she went over to John, breathing heavily. She couldn't remember the last she had run that much. Well in her dreams with the Doctor, but that didn't count. Carly grabbed onto one of John's arms tightly as he closed the heavy main door behind them before he immediately began ringing the warning bell.

"What are you doing?" Martha asked confused.

"Maybe one man can't fight them, but this school teaches us to stand together." John explained quickly before he started shouting, "Take arms! Take arms!"

"You can't do that!" Martha protested.

"You want me to fight, don't you?"

"Charlene, stop him!" Martha said, turning to her.

She froze a bit. "I…" Before she could really even say anything, John began shouting again, ringing the bell even louder.

"Take arms! Take arms!"

It wasn't long before all the boys in the school were downstairs, in their pajamas and running their sleepy eyes away. Hutchinson was the first one to say something, looking and sounding confused.

"I say, sir, what's the matter?" he asked.

"Enemy at the door, Hutchinson." John explained. "Enemy at the door. Take arms!"

Carly couldn't help but feel worried, unable to stop the feeling of dread coming over her. This wasn't going to end well…at all.

A little while later, she stood next to Joan as they watched the boys load machine guns and other weapons. She wanted to stop John from allowing this to happen, but she kept her mouth shut. She was taught not to stand in the way of a man doing his job. Deep inside of her, it twisted her insides to be doing this, just watching this happen, knowing that nothing good was going to become of this.

However, it didn't stop Martha.

"You can't do this, Doctor." She shouted, following behind him. He ignored her. "Mr. Smith!"

Again, he wasn't listening to her. Martha glanced at Carly pleadingly. The blonde said nothing as she glanced away from the maid.

Martha groaned in frustration.

"Maintain position over the stable yard." John told the boys as they moved quickly to put up the weapons.

Though she was frustrated, Martha continued to try, "They're just boys! You can't ask them to fight!"

"Faster now! That's it."

"They don't stand a chance!"

John breathed heavily through his nose in frustration as he turned to Martha. "They're cadets, Miss Jones. They are trained to defend the King and all his properties."

Just then, the Headmaster entered the room, looking around. "What in the thunder's name is this? Before I devise an excellent and endless series of punishments for each and every one of you, could someone explain very simply and immediately exactly what is going on?"

"Headmaster, I have to report the school is under attack." John announced.

"Really? Is that so?" the Headmaster asked dryly. "Perhaps you and I should have a word in private?"

"I promise you, sir. I was in the village with Miss Geller and Matron." John said, nodding towards Carly and Joan. "It's Baines, sir. Jeremy Baines and Mr. Clark from Oakland Farm. They've gone mad, sir. They've got guns. They've already murdered people in the village. I saw it happen."

"Matron, is that so?" The Headmaster turned to Joan.

She nodded. "I'm afraid it's true, sir."

"Murder on our own soil?"

"I saw it, yes."

Carly decided to speak then, getting the headmaster to look at her. "We both did." She added quietly.

The Headmaster patted John on the shoulder. "Perhaps you did well then, Mr. Smith. What makes you think the danger is coming here?"

"Well, sir, um, they said…"

Joan cut in, "Baines threatened Mr. Smith, sir. Um, said he'd follow him. We don't know why."

"Very well." The Headmaster nodded. "You boys remain on guard. Mr. Snell, telephone the police. Mr. Phillips, with me. We shall investigate." Before he could leave to go outside, Martha stepped in front of them.

"No, it's not safe out there." She said, and he scoffed at her.

He glanced over at John. "Mr. Smith, it seems your favorite servant is giving me advice. You will control her, sir." He glared down at Martha before he left with Mr. Phillips.

Martha watched, letting out a sigh. "I've gotta go find that watch." She headed out of the room.

Carly glanced at John for a moment, but he was too busy helping the boys. After seeing this, she decided to follow after Martha to find out more about this watch while John was busy with other things.

The blonde joined Martha in John's office, helping her search for the watch.

"So, this watch…why is it important?" Carly questioned as she stopped searching for a moment.

Martha didn't stop looking as she answered. "Well, I know it sounds mad, but the Doctor and you became human, you two took the alien parts of yourselves and stored it inside of the watch. It's not really a watch, it just looks like a watch."

Carly said nothing for a moment. "I believe you."

"You do?" Martha stopped and looked at her, taken aback.

She nodded slowly. "I do." She sighed as she ran her fingers through her blonde hair. "I've been having these dreams about it…about John and I being two different people…it's hard to wrap my head around but I know, deep down, that it's true. I don't want it to be true. I enjoy my life here. Yes, getting to have those adventures would be amazing but here…I can have a family…get married…grow old…live a normal life…"

"I understand…but Charlene…that's not you and it's certainly not the Doctor." Martha said softly. "There's people that need you. I need you guys to come back."

Carly said nothing for a moment, changing the subject. "I…I'm going to go help Matron." She mumbled. "You can handle it from here." She rushed off before Martha could protest.

She was wrong. No one needed her. If anyone needed anyone, it was the Doctor.

It was chaotic when Carly came into the room, so Joan immediately put her to work on getting everything ready for when the fight was over while she went off to tend to something else. She wasn't working for long when she heard John come into the room and she looked up to find him with two boys.

"You're with Armitage and Thwaites. They know the drill." They nodded, and John headed over to her, giving her a stern look. "Carly, what are you doing here? It's not safe." He touched her shoulder and she gently pushed his hand off.

"I know that, but I'm needed here. I can't just hide away while everyone else is out here." She told him.

John frowned. "I don't like the idea of you staying here."

Carly didn't comment as she changed the subject, giving him a small smile. "So, tonight has been interesting."

He couldn't help but smile too. "Well, it certainly didn't go as planned."

"It sure hasn't, but that's okay…it actually reminds me of the adventures the Doctor had." Carly said softly.

John stiffened at the mention of him. "Well, those were just dreams. They didn't happen."

"But what if they did?" Carly asked him gently. "What if they weren't just dreams? What if they happened?"

He shook his head. "You're taking nonsense. They didn't happen…what did Martha say to you?"

"She only said the truth."

"It's not the truth. The Doctor isn't real, but I am. John Smith, isn't that enough?" He looked at her sadly and her heart constricted.

"Of course, it is, John." Carly reached over and touched his cheek. He leaned into her touch. "You are enough for me. I love you." She realized what she said and winced. She hadn't meant to say that.

John stared at her. "You do?"

She paused for a moment. "I do." She smiled gently. "I love you."

He said nothing before smiling at her. "I love you too." He moved in and kissed her deeply.

Carly kissed him back, forgetting for a moment what they were talking about. But that didn't last long as once they pulled back from the kiss, she went back to the subject.

"But despite that, we can't hide away from the truth. No matter how much we want to, John."

John automatically changed the subject. "I've to go." He muttered, kissing her forehead.

Carly sighed, but she still had one more thing to say before he left. "Martha was right about one thing, John." He stopped in his spot and glanced over at her as she smiled at him sadly. "That those children aren't supposed to be fighting. John Smith, the one I'm in love with, wouldn't want them to fight and no matter how much you try to deny that the Doctor doesn't exist, he wouldn't want them to fight either."

John was silent.

"Mr. Smith, if you please!" the Headmaster called. John sighed.

"What choice do I have?" He asked softly. He kissed her one last time before going over to join the headmaster.

"There's always a choice." Carly whispered to herself. "And you're making the wrong one, John…"
