The first drawing after you wake is clumsy and inept. The subject is Seamus – what else could it be? Maybe it was a bit too advanced to start off with, but you were well aware of the fact that you wouldn't be able to draw anything else. Not with his face stuck in your mind.

It looks like something you used to draw when you were a child – nothing like the art you know you have the capability of producing.

You would be more than happy if Seamus never sees it – you've drawn him before, and with much more skill – but you've never been good at keeping things from him. He catches a glimpse of it before you can tear it to shreds, and he refuses to give it back.

You cannot find it in yourself to argue with him too much, however. It's been a long time coming, and it's not yet perfect, but you can draw again – that, more than anything, is the tangible proof that you've needed to be truly convinced that you can recover.

Seamus is prattling on about the merits of the drawing when you give him a sunny smile and murmur, "I love you, you know that right?"

He immediately returns his attention you, gripping your fingers and replying, "Of course I do."

As he climbs into the hospital bed and settles in beside you, you realise there's nothing else you need to say. He's here – he'll always be here – and you're more secure in that knowledge than in knowing that you're going to be okay.
