"Tetsuya." A young teen suddenly asked him boyfriend as he looked up from his lunch.
It was a sunny day, and the two sat on the rooftop of Teiko Academy, both silently enjoying each other's company until the peace was broken by a certain red-haired captain.
"Yes, Akashi-kun?" Asked the boy in question, tilting his head cutely. The light shining down from the sky created a golden halo around his small form. Akashi had to confirm twice that this man before him was not an angel sent down from the heavens to steal his heart.
He shook his head, pushing the little silly thought in his head away as he remember what he was about to say before he was distracted. Nervously, he played with his fingers as he looked down bashfully.
Kuroko looked at his beloved, concerned by his out-of-character act. Reaching out, he laid his hand on top of Akashi's in comfort. "It's alright; Sei-kun, I won't laugh." He smiled reassuringly at the other.
Akashi sucked in a small breath, as though he could gather more courage from the air around him. "Well..." He started, "Tetsuya, do you promise to stay by my side forever, no matter how much I change, and even if I am sick, or poor?" He rambled out, blushing profoundly.
Kuroko stared at Akashi, his face showing a slight expression of shock before his blank eyes softened, and warmth gathered in the teal orbs. "Silly Sei-kun," he laughed, "Of course I will. It's a promise." He placed a chaste, innocent kiss onto the other teen's lips, hugging him in the progress.
Akashi blushed, before he, too, returned the embrace. "I'm glad to hear that, Tetsuya." He smiled, normal strict aura gone. And then, deciding to tease his Tetsuya a bit, he smirked, "That sounded like a wedding vow, Tetsuya. It seems that you DO want to become my bride, after all."
Red painted the smaller boy's face as he registered the information. He glared playfully at Akashi. "Sei!"
Those were the days of happiness, and innocence. It was like a dream. But like a dream, it cannot last forever. Reality will always break through and shatter the beautiful illusion that the dream had created.
"Tetsuya, what is the meaning of this?" Shocked, angry, HURT. Heteromatic eyes were wide with rejection as they stared at the man who'd caused all of this.
"It is exactly what it looks like, Akashi-kun." The petite teen answered blankly, his face betraying no emotions. "I want to quit the Teiko basketball club." He bowed, "I'm sorry."
"Tet-" Before he could even utter his beloved's name, the object of his affection and hurt was gone, the door that had been his escape slammed with one final 'bam!'.
The only occupant in the room fell onto his knees, and he brought his hands or his face, feeling the wet droplets of tears that streamed from his eyes, and the burning pain of betrayal in his broken heart.
"Why, Tetsuya..." The words escaped from his mouth. "Didn't you promise that you will stay by my side forever?" His voice broke at the last word, his frame shaking. How could Tetsuya do this to him? How could he break their vow?
For hours he frozen in his position, letting his emotions rage inside him. And then, when the clock struck twelve, something seemed to snap in place. Like a final piece of puzzle falling into spot.
Fine. If this is the way that Tetsuya want to play it, so be it. After all, two can play at this game of betrayal.
You brought this onto yourself, Tetsuya.
Akashi Seijuro stood up, his heteromatic eyes burning with intensity.
It had been a year since then, since Tetsuya had broken his heart. He had changed, for good. No longer does he allow anyone to worm their way through his heart. He had became an emotionless puppet, his only goal victory.
He had acquired a new 'phantom', he exceeded Tetsuya in every since form, from physically to mentally. Overall, he was the perfect, new prototype. He will lead Akashi Seijuro to a new level of victory, of glory.
Akashi pushed away the nagging need for Tetsuya, and focused on his new experiment. And as he had predicted, his test came out to be perfect. Rakuzan had crushed Serin with their new secret weapon, and to Akashi's glee, as he convinced himself, Kuroko Tetsuya's soul.
Tetsuya did not even last for five minutes after the announcement of his retirement as being the 'phantom' of the Miracles, fleeing through the doors within seconds. Akashi scoffed at that, shoving the little amount of guilt and hurt into the corner of head, so, Kuroko Tetsuya is just another normal human after all, he can be crushed just as easily as any other, Akashi mused in disappointment.
After Kuroko's leave, Serin lost their spirits, and once again, Rakuzan snatched the trophy of victory with ease. Leaving behind them one more disheartened team. Nothing new. Akashi did not feel sad at all, it was Tetsuya's fault for defying him and breaking his promise, he told himself repeatedly as though to imprint the words into his head, and to rid himself of the remorse that he felt.
After they had left the courts, Akashi led his team away, strolling down the street casually as though he had not just won the Winter Cup.
Hah, he laughed in his head, it was about time for Tetsuya to run up to him, and beg him for forgiveness. And then he would reject him, thus completing his revenge. Yes, that would be nice. It was Tetsuya's punishment for stealing his heart, and then breaking it like his feeling were nothing.
But Tetsuya never came.
He waited, hours after hours after hours, and yet there was no news at all from a certain teal head. Keh, he thought bitterly, even after this, you will not come to me, Tetsuya. Why are you so bent on defying me?
And then, exactly twenty-four hours after Rakuzan had won the Winter Cup, he received one life-changing phone-call. He picked it up at first ring, it was an anonymous caller, and the idea itself irked him. How dare someone call him at such a time! "Yes?" He asked, tone snippy.
He was greeted by an angry bark. "You bastard!" The voice, which Akashi had identified as the ace of Serin; Kagami Taiga, screamed. "What the fuck did you do to Kuroko!"
That comment made him raise one single, elegant eyebrow. "What do you mean, Taiga? I did nothing to him at all-" he was cut off by another angry yell, much to his irritation.
"Kuroko would not throw himself off a fucking rooftop without a fucking reason, you son of a bitch!" Kagami screamed into the phone, making Akashi wince at the loud volume. And then what the hot-head said hit him.
"What do you mean that Tetsuya threw himself off the roof?" He asked, voice trembling as he confirmed the truth with Kagami's silence. His eyes widened as he registered pain in his chest, it felt as though his broken heart was been broken again. It can't be true it can't be true it can't be true! He wanted to make Tetsuya hurt, but not this way! Taiga it's be joking! Yes, Akashi murmured to himself, he must be joking! This must be some type of revenge for crushing Serin!
No, a voice whispered inside his head, Taiga cannot lie that well, and he isn't the type to do this kind of thing.
No-!
"Where is he?" Akashi did not know what his was doing, his body was not his, and his mouth moved on its own to form the words. Maybe this was his true self talking?
An angry huff was heard on the other side of the phone, "You do not deserve to see Kuroko after what you've done to him." Kagami said, grounding his teeth.
"Please." It was not an order, but a genuine plea. It was so out of character of Akashi Seijuro, the feared, proud captain of the Generation of Miracles to beg that it shocked even Akashi himself.
Another silence was heard on the other side of line as finally, as though Kagami was debating with himself of he should tell Akashi or not. And then, after what seemed like hours, but actual mere minutes, of suspended silence, Kagami finally answered. "Akoki Hospital-"
And before he could say more, Akashi hung up, and practically flew out of his house, his head blank and all of his previous resent towards Tetsuya forgotten as he sped towards the hospital. He would confirm it, he must confirm it! Tetsuya is just fine! He is just going to get evidence that Tetsuya didn't throw himself off a building and then he would make Taiga pay! Yes, that's right, Akashi told himself. Tetsuya can't be hurt.
Normally, said the voice in his head, a person who throws themselves off a building would be dea-
No! Akashi shouted mentally, Don't you dare say that! Tetsuya is just fine! He isn't hurt at all!
And it was only when the woman at the desk called for him did Akashi snap out of his inner debate. He walked forward briskly, and snapped two words at the scared woman. "Kuroko Tetsuya."
The woman flinched and squeaked, before nodding and started typing in her computer. Time seemed to stop for Akashi as she did so. See? He told himself, Tetsuya isn't here. Taiga lied, Tetsuya is just fine. Tetsuya is fine. He chanted it like it was a life line, his only life line.
And then his world shattered once more. "Sir," the woman said, "Kuroko Tetsuya is in room 11, it's just down the hall." Akashi stood there, frozen, as though he couldn't believe what the woman just said. No, this cannot be!
"What?!" He spluttered out, his normally calm and collected aura gone, replaced by one of a panicked, scared child.
"R-room 11, sir." The woman squeaked again, fearing for her life.
Everything went red for Akashi, and he slammed both of his hands down onto the desk. "Shut up! Stop lying! Tetsuya isn't here! He is just at home like he always is!" His voice went a pitch higher to the point of hysteria, his voice breaking.
The poor woman paled, "Sir, please..." She trailed off, too scared to finish her words.
Just go, said the voice, Just go and confirm the truth for yourself.
The voice seemed to snap Akashi out of whatever trance he was in, and he nodded to himself. He didn't even glance back at the kneeing woman at the desk or at the crowd that had gather at the scene. He just robotically made his way to the direction room 11 was, trying to convince himself that this was just a joke.
It seemed like long walk for Akashi, he'd rather walk in a field of needles than walk through that again. It seemed to take millenniums, and each time he lifted his legs they felt like lead. It took all of his strength and pride to not sag down right there and curl into a small ball, away from the pain of the world.
Then finally, he arrived outside room 11, one look at the tag on the door, and Akashi fell to his knees onto the ground.
For gleaming on the innocent metal, was the name 'Kuroko Tetsuya'.
