What A Woman

Sirius sprinted into the room, the momentum making him skid and almost crash into the wall. Remus blinked at him and then chuckled, shaking his head.

"Graceful as always, Padfoot."

Peter snorted, and Sirius rolled his eyes.

"Why did nobody come get me this morning? You know I'm a disaster, Moony!"

"I thought you'd be enough of an adult to be on time to your best friend's wedding?" Remus offered.

"But James will be here in like, ten minutes, and I'm not ready!"

"It's your own fault for waiting until the last minute to get out of bed."

Sirius pouted and held up the tie that hung from his wrist. "Help me please?"

Sighing, Remus held his hand out. "Come here, you menace."

James entered the room to see Remus straightening Sirius out, while Peter finished doing his own hair.

"You were late, weren't you?" he asked Sirius, raising his eyebrows.

"Little bit," Sirius admitted. "But I'm here now and Remus is adult enough to make sure I'm presentable."

"Please tell me you have the rings."

Sirius paused, patting his pockets. When he felt the small box in his left pocket he grinned. "Of course I do. I can't believe you doubted me, James, how very dare?"

"You doubted yourself too," James pointed out, though he grinned, amused despite himself. "I miss your purple hair. It would have matched the waistcoats."

He gestured down to his own lilac waistcoat, that was matched by the other three men in the room. While Sirius was his best man, Remus and Peter were still important to him, and he'd been determined they should all be decked out in the wedding robes.

"Lily would have castrated me if I'd kept the purple hair," Sirius replied. "I like my bits, James, I don't want to lose them."

James nodded, because that was a very good point. He loved his Lily-Flower more than any man ever loved a woman before, but she was a dangerous vixen when she wanted to be.

"Are you excited?" Remus asked, turning his attention to James as he finally finished straightening Sirius out.

James nodded and the smile on his face widened. "So excited. I can't believe it's finally here. It felt like it'd never actually arrive."

"You've been planning for almost a year," Peter said, shrugging. "Seems like ages ago since you proposed."

An alarm on James' watch trilled and he startled slightly. "Merlin. It's time."

Sirius wrapped an arm around James' shoulder and led him to the door. "Let's get you married."

Lily walked down the aisle towards him, and Jame's felt weak at the knees. Was it abnormal to feel like your legs were made of jelly when your almost-wife walked towards you?

He glanced at Sirius to see an angelic smile on his best friend's face, and it hit him just how happy for him Sirius was. He couldn't have asked for a better friend.

When Lily arrived beside him, James winked at her, and she giggled, a playful sound that gave away just how giddy she was. He was sure she wasn't as happy as he was, but it sounded like she was close.

The high heels he knew she had on her feet made her tall enough to be at eye level with him, and James couldn't tear his eyes away from hers as they spoke their vows to one another.

Sirius handed them the rings, and James slid Lily's onto her finger before he pressed a kiss to the finger.

She placed his on, and the weight—minor though it was—felt amazing on his hand.

"I now pronounce you, man and wife. You may kiss the bride."

James didn't need to be told twice.

"So worth all the kerfuffle," Sirius said to Remus, as the two of them stood just off the dancefloor, watching James and Lily dance their first dance as newlyweds. "Did you get the candles ready?"

Remus nodded. "I did. Think it's time to light them?"

Sirius nodded. Given it was spring, the nights were starting to get lighter later, but the sun was setting and it would be dark before they knew it. Sirius wanted James and Lily to have the best wedding possible.

"Let's light things up."

With Peter's help, they each managed to get the lemon—in both colour and scent—candles lit around the reception tent, levitating them to float around out of reach of the guests that would undoubtedly get drunker as the evening progressed.

Others joined James and Lily on the dancefloor and Sirius pulled first Marlene and then Dorcas into energetic dances. He lost track of time, and only realised how late it was getting when Lily dropped into a chair beside him when he'd paused for a break.

She kicked her heels off and lifted her legs—dress and all—into Sirius' lap. Automatically, his hands went to her feet and he massaged them gently, smiling when she let out a small moan of relief.

"I hear you were late this morning," she said, arching her eyebrow at him.

Sirius snorted. "Of course you did. I got there. Just… not in as timely a manner as I perhaps should have."

Lily grinned. "Of course you didn't. The candles were a nice touch though. Thank you for being here today, Sirius."

Sirius rolled his eyes and squeezed her foot gently. "I wouldn't have missed it for the world, you know that."

"Get your hands off my wife, Padfoot," James said as he dropped into the chair beside Lily, one hand reaching out to rest on her shoulder. She leant into his touch automatically.

Sirius grinned at him. "She's decided that she made a mistake. She's going to run away with me and leave you here with Remus and Peter."

"It's a good job you're lovable, Padfoot," James said, shaking his head.

"Bold of you both to think that I don't realise that I pretty much married the two of you today," Lily added in, shaking her head.

Remus and Peter arrived at the table and Lily grinned at them. She let her feet fall back to the floor and accepted the trainers that Remus put on the table, and the socks from Peter.

"Thank you, boys."

James watched on in amazement as his friends waited on his new wife. It hadn't hit him until this moment that she had in fact married the Marauders, not just him.

He grinned.

What a woman!
