Chapter 16 - Sweet Dreams Part 1

Location: Apokolips - The Beyonder's Base Of Operations

A bright yellow energy bubble engulfed the large room filled with extremely sophisticated equipment. When the light from the bubble finally diminished, Darkseid's Female Furies could be seen on the floor of the room regaining consciousness. Bernadeth is holding her head with both hands on the side of her face, and trying to shake off the effects of their previous battle. Bloody Mary, and Stompa are already on their feet, and looking around in surprise at their surroundings. The conscious Female Furies all turn their heads when they hear a loud cracking sound. Lashina has her back turned to them, and pulls back her left hand to crack her steel charged whip on the floor with an enraged look on her face. Gilotina is still lying on the floor, broken and battered from her earlier fight with Knockout.

The Furies' attention is drawn to a new source of light emanating from the far corner of the room. Inside the light, the being known as The Beyonder emerges, and walks toward them with an air of disinterest. "You have failed in your mission to capture Darkseid's former pawn. You may now depart." The Beyonder instructed, and casually walks through their ranks like they weren't there. Bernadeth's right eye began to twitch, and the other Furies were taking his actions as a direct insult to their pride as Granny Goodness' elite warriors. Bernadeth steps forward in a challenging manner, and reaches out to grab onto The Beyonder's shoulder. She stops her actions, when the Beyonder turns his head to narrow his white eyes at her. Bernadeth feels a bead of sweat making its way down the side of her face, and clears her throat to try to hide her sudden fear.

"Why did you aid in our escape?" The other Furies nod their heads in agreement with their leader, and wait for the being to answer her question. The Beyonder looks over at a large piece of equipment inside the room, and walks calmly over to it. Before the Furies could protest, the room begins to glow, and six forms begin to take shape from within.

The first, and second individuals to emerge are the imposing forms of the Radioactive Man, and Mister Hyde.

The next is a woman who is 6 feet 8 inches tall. Her shapely body is composed of a malleable sand-like substance, and she smirks over at the Furies punching her large fists together. She is the super-criminal known as Quicksand!

Another form appears that has four long metal tentacles waving around menacingly. This is the multi-armed menace, Doctor Octopus!

The fifth member of the group lumbers forth with a humanoid form, and has a beak-like mouth. He also has dorsal plates along his back, with claws on his hands, and a tail with spikes. This is Stegron: The Dinosaur Man!

The last individual is 6 feet 7 inches tall wearing an all black business suit, with a blue shirt, and black necktie. He has pink eyes, and chalk white skin. His has is also white, and he has sharp shark-like teeth. He is the Crimelord known as Tombstone!

The six quickly surround the Female Furies, who take up defensive stances in preparation for a fight. The six look to the Beyonder for their instructions, and he stares back with an unreadable expression. "Escort them back to their master. If they resist...terminate their existence."

"You heard the man! Get the lead out!" Tombstone ordered, and shoved Stompa forward roughly. Stompa is about to retaliate, when Bernadeth shakes her head in the negative.

"We're currently outnumbered, and we have no idea what powers our adversaries have. Let alone the abilities of this unknown being. Knowledge of your enemies is one of the keys to victory. We will acquiesce...for now." Bernadeth whispers to Stompa, and the other Furies. Stompa grits her teeth, and grudgingly nods to her superior. Lashina looks down at the barely breathing form of Gilotina, and points over to her getting the other Furies attention.

"What about her?" Bernadeth scoffs loudly, with Mad Harriet and Bloody Mary laughing derisively at Lashina. Stompa snorts, and mutters under her breath as she's escorted out with the other Furies.

"Leave her. She's dog-meat now." Radioactive Man turns up his nose in disgust, and Tombstone laughs out loud, and shakes his head.

"I think I'm starting to like you! You're one stone-cold chick!" Doctor Octopus uses his metal arms to push Bloody Mary, and Mad Harriet further out of the room.

"We are wasting valuable time, Tombstone. Let us be done with this quickly, and get back to more important matters." Mister Hyde makes a *tsking* noise, and wags his index finger at Otto Octavius, as he gently motions for Lashina to keep moving.

"Now, now my dear doctor. We don't want our new friends to think we're not gentlemen, now do we?" Mister Hyde then sneers down at Lashina. "If you stop, I will crush the life out of you, slowly." Hyde dared Lashina with a wide grin on his twisted face. Lashina smirks darkly back at him.

"I will personally remove your head from your shoulders, Foul Beast." Mister Hyde laughs with a mocking tone at Lashina's statement.

"We shall see, my dear. We shall see." Quicksand grumbles under her breath, and forms her sand-like limbs into large mallets, when she notices Mad Harriet beginning to break off from the group. Quicksand slams the large sand construct down next to Mad Harriet's side, forcing her to return into the formation.

"No one dares to disobey the Beyonder. Not when he can have us destroyed with a single thought. Will he return us back to Earth when he's finished with us is the question that I want answered." Quicksand pondered to herself, as she made her way with the others out of the room.

Stegron was the last to leave, and he reached down to pick up the prone form of Gilotina. The Beyonder motions with his hand for Stegron to stop what he's doing, and Stegron obeys him immediately. "This one could be useful. Another chess piece to add to the board." Beyonder gestures with his right hand, and Gilotina's body disappears in a ball of light. The Beyonder looks over at Stegron, and then points to where the others had left. "Go with them, and make sure they all arrive at their destination." Stegron bows his head to the Beyonder, and leaves immediately afterwards to catch up to the group.

The Beyonder begins to rise into the air, and stares out into the distance with unreadable eyes. "The Anomaly must be dealt with. I will employ new pawns that are already on the board for this purpose." The Beyonder's form is surrounded with crackling yellow colored energy, and he soon vanishes from Apokolips completely.

Location: Justice League Earth - Gotham City - Thirty Minutes after The Batman's Departure

Spider-Man is currently perched on top of a large old church building overlooking the entire city. Peter is peering down to street level looking for anything out of the ordinary. Peter sighs, and decides to sit down on one of the ledges next to the largest of the church's steeple. "*phew* I finally get a chance to catch my breath. Seems like I haven't had a moments rest since I got sent here to this world." Peter glances to his right, and notices a grinning gargoyle perched right next to him on the ledge. "Hiya, Bruce! Can I call you Bruce?" Spider-Man turns his masked head to look at the statue, and he's not surprised when he gets no response back.

"Okay, Bruce...you seem like a good listener, so I'll tell you what's been happening with me lately." Peter rest his costumed hands behind his back, and he starts to swing his legs dangling over the side of the ledge back, and forth. "You see Bruce, I'm not from around here. I'm from a completely different universe." Spider-Man turns to stare at the gargoyle statue. "Don't give me that look, Bruce...it's the truth!" Peter returns his attention to looking down over the city. "This nigh-omnipotent cosmic being called The Beyonder transported me here. For what reason, I haven't a clue...but I still think someone, or something interfered, because I'm pretty sure he wanted to kill me." Peter watches as the people down below him go about their business, without knowing he's there.

"Then I meet this world's version of the Avengers, and they weren't too thrilled to see little old me. I also learned a new kind of pain from a pretty lady with wings, and a hair trigger temper." Peter winced from remembering the pain that she leveled on his arach-nads for landing on top of her. "Then...and you'll love this one, Bruce...then they make me a member of their team! I've been a reservist on the Avengers roster for years before they gave me a chance. I get zapped to an entirely new world, and then *BOOM* instant membership!" Peter makes a clap with his two gloved hands together to emphasize the point, and then sighs deeply.

"Oh yeah...their telepathic Martian member read my mind, and knows everything about me, as well as every other member of the League." Peter turns his head to stare back at the gargoyle. "Weeelll, besides a Bat you may, or may not have met." Spider-Man slumps his head down in dismay. "I'm really not looking forward to telling him my life story. The guy seems to have his bat-undies in a bunch every time we're in the same general area. Let's not forget that Beyonder sent one of my old play-dates over to mess with me. When he had that reporter Lois Lane, and threatened to drop her over the side of the building...I saw Gwen there instead."

Peter puts his costumed palms over the lenses of his mask, and folds the fingers of his hands inward towards his masked face, and lowers his head. "I'm still haunted by that day, and how I couldn't save her." Spider-Man remains quiet for a few minutes, and then raises his head to shake it slightly to clear his thoughts. "I'm no use to anyone moping, and having one of my guilt trips! I've got to find the Goblin before he can threaten anymore lives!" Peter stands up on the end of the ledge, and pulls his costumed arms back, and makes fists with his hands.

Peter is on alert when he hears sirens, and looks down to the street below. "Gotham PD is out in full force, I'd better follow, and see what's up." Spider-Man taps the top of the gargoyle's head, and then shoots out a web-line to the nearest high rise building. "Thanks for lending me a friendly ear, Bruce ol' buddy! Keep smiling!" With those parting words said, Spider-Man starts to web-swing through the city in order to follow the Gotham City police vehicles to their destination.

Peter glances to the side, when a costumed man wearing an black costume with a large blue bird symbol on his chest glides with cloth wings under his armpits. Another person makes himself known, as he swings on a cable on the other side of Spider-Man. This is a boy in a red costume with a yellow 'R' on one side of his chest. He is also wearing a black domino mask, and has black gloves, and boots. "Hey, newbie! We've got this, right Nightwing?" The young boy said with a confident tone. The gliding man, now identified as Nightwing shakes his head at his younger counterpart.

"I don't believe he's a newbie, Robin. He's the one Batman told us about, remember?" Nightwing corrected the new Boy Wonder's statement, earning a frown from him.

"Soooo, you both work for Bats?" Spider-Man asked in genuine curiosity, as he continues to web-swing along the skyline of the city.

'Yes!/NO!" Came the replies of Robin, and Nightwing simultaneously. Peter turns to look at them both, as they are frowning at each other.

"Whatever! Come on, Newbie! There's trouble happening over at Arkham! Last one there's got to kiss Croc!" Robin increases the speed of his swings on the cable, and shoots out another line to get ahead of Spider-Man, and Nightwing. Nightwing sighs in slight annoyance.

"Batman, and Batgirl are going to meet us there. Whenever it involves Arkham, you know it can't be good." Spider-Man nods over to Nightwing, and increases the speed of his web-swinging and quickly passes both the former, and current Boy Wonder.

"No time for further introductions then, let's get swinging!" Peter said with a look of worry underneath his mask. "Arkham Asylum, home to nearly all of the Bat's rogues gallery. Now that we're getting closer, my spider-sense is going ballistic! Nightwing was right...this is looking very bad!"

15 Minutes Earlier - Arkham Asylum

"~Home again, Home again...Jiggidy-Jig.~." Harleen Quinzel also known as Harley Quinn mutters from within her prison cell with a large window made of re-enforced glass. Harley is laying down in her bed cot in grey prison wear, and kicking up her feet in frustration. Harley puts her head back on her pillow, and turns her head to the right to stare at the wall. "Hey Red...didya eva meet a guy, and you just clicked right off the bat?" Harley asked over to the person in the adjoining cell.

"If this is another story about how great 'Mistah J' is...I think I'll throw up, Harl." The voice of a woman replies to Harley with a note of disdain in her voice.

"I can honestly say, Pamela...if she does before the day is done, you will not be the only one." A man of small stature with blond hair wearing a blue suit with a Large top hat agreed with Pamela from within his own cell across from Harley Quinn's. A chorus of loud groans could be heard from all of the other inmate's cells, and Harley got up from her bed, and has a pout on her face,

"I don't talk about him that much...do I?' Another chorus of *YES* is said by all of the inmates, and Harley frowns, and folds her arms over her breasts. "Well...it's not about Mistah J, Okay?! I met someone else. He's funny, and athletic, and MMmmmm...them Spidey-buns!" Harley has a pink blush on her cheeks, and puts her two arms on the left side of her with both hands clasped together on the side of her face. She has a dreamy expression, and is giggling softly.

The Mad Hatter blinks, and then blinks again in shock. The rest of the inmates also can't believe their ears. Pamela Isley also known as Poison Ivy is the first to get over her shock. "Are you for real, Harl?! You're finally kicking that clown clod out of your life?" Poison Ivy exclaimed with a note of excitement in her voice.

Harley is twirling her left blond side pigtail, and doing a thinking pose with her left index finger resting on her chin. "It's like this, Red...Mistah J's jokes kinda are falling flat, and I like a good Bat chase and all...but Mistah J's a little too obsessed with him. He neva revs up his Harley at all! That was the final staw! A girl has needs ya know!"

Harley makes an angry face, and puts her two arms to each side of her body with her hands out, and fingers closed into her palms. She stomps her left foot down with a loud *bang* Mad Hatter straightens out his large bow tie, and smiles at Harleen, and wiggles his eyebrows suggestively at her. Harley's right eye is twitching, and she looks over at Jervis, and runs her thumb on her left hand across her throat. Mad Hatter suddenly finds the high collar on his shirt a bit too tight, and uncomfortable murmuring is heard from the other inmates.

"When we get out of here, Harl...I want to meet him. I don't want some guy stringing you along like Joker did." Harleen was going to say something, but Pamela beat her to the punch. "No arguments, Harl." Harley snapped her fingers on her left hand, and mouths out silently *damn* from within her cell. A bright yellow light drew the attention of all the inmates in Arkham, and within the light was a man floating in mid air wearing a strange metallic costume over most of his body.

"Players in the endless game, I shall free you...in exchange for you eliminating the anomaly known as Spider-Man." Most of the inmates jump at the chance for freedom. They didn't care who this Spider-Man was, as long as they got out of Arkham. Harley isn't impressed by the Beyonder's offer, and she blows him a raspberry, with her two thumbs on her temples, and her eyes closed. This reaction has the Beyonder raising a single questioning eyebrow in her direction.

"You do not wish for freedom?" Harleen turns herself around, and pats her left ass cheek multiple times at the Beyonder, getting him to tilt his head in slight confusion.

"Not if it means hurting, Spidey-Buns!" The Beyonder nods his head, and the rest of the cells doors disappear with a wave of the Beyonder's hand. The Beyonder then vanishes in a cloud of energy leaving Arkham's inmates free to escape. The guards that were frozen due to the Beyonder's power, are now able to move, and one of them sounds the alarm.

Killer Croc, Two-Face, Clayface, Penguin and the newly jailed Bane all make quick work of taking out the guards. The other inmates: Baby Doll, Calendar Girl, The Riddler, Scarecrow, and Mad Hatter all hung back to let the others do the dirty work for them. Meanwhile, Poison Ivy was trying to break the combination lock on Harley's prison cell door. "Come on! Why won't this work?!" Poison Ivy gave up on cracking the door code, and took a billy club that one of the guards dropped, and starts hitting the locking mechanism hard with it.

"Hey, Red...why are ya busting your butt for me? You can get outta here before the Bat shows up!" Poison Ivy shook her head at Harley, and continued to bash at the lock with the billy club.

"No way, Harl! I won't abandon you...we're an unbeatable team together!" Harleen has a large heartfelt smile, and her face scrunches up with her tiny nose wiggling.

"Aww geez, Red! I'm gettin' all misty eyed ova here!" Harley said with a giggle, as she fanned her face with her right hand. Pamela grins, and her efforts finally pay off when the lock short circuits, and the cell door opens and Harley walks out and hugs her friend.

"Thanks a million, Red!"

Directly Outside of Arkham Aslyum

The Batmobile skids to a stop 15 feet away from the entrance to the Asylum, and the top hatch of the Batmobile opens with Batman, and Batgirl jumping out of the vehicle. Batman looks up to the night sky, and narrows his eyes behind his cowl. Spider-Man, Nightwing, and Robin show up at their location one after the other. Robin runs up to Batman, and Batgirl with Nightwing slowly making his way over. Batgirl is surprised to see Spider-Man at first, but smiles cutely and waves a slender gloved hand in his direction. Peter waves back to her, and walks up to greet her.

"Batgirl, it's good to see you again. You look ready to kick some bad guy butt, just try to save some for me, okay?" Batgirl grins, and playfully punches Spidey on the shoulder.

"No promises, but I'll see what I can do." Batgirl winks at Peter, and his face is a little flushed underneath his mask. Batman walks up to the two, and decides to break up their reunion.

"Keep your minds on the mission. We've got most of my rogue's gallery inside of these walls, and I don't need any of my people distracted." Batgirl glares up at the Batman with a frosty look, and her gloved hands on her shapely hips.

"Batgirl, and I are on the same page: Stop the bad guys before they get out, right?" Spider-Man exclaims, with Batgirl nodding at him with a smile, and she shifts back to a frown when she looks back over to Batman.

"Why are you treating me differently...is it because I was captured one time? You know I can handle myself in there!" Nightwing, and Robin are watching the exchange with different looks. Robin shakes his head when he thinks of the condition that the Joker left her in, and Nightwing agrees that she's ready to start crime-fighting again.

"We'll table this discussion for a later time. There are too many to take on for a frontal assault, so we surprise them by entering via the roof skylight." Batman stares over at Peter. "Follow my lead, and you won't get hurt." Batman turns around, and takes out his grapple gun from his utility belt, and fires a line to the top of the Arkham building, and snags the stone ledge. Batman his a button on his grapple gun, and lifts into the air, being pulled up by the line retracting.

"Well, we'd better get up there before Bat-Dad grounds us for being a second late." Peter quipped to Batgirl, getting a playful grin in return,

"Lead the way, Spidey." Spider-Man shoots a web-line to the top of the building, and uses the elasticity of his web, and his own leg strength to propel himself to the top in no time.

Batgirl looks up at Peter's backside as he makes it to the top, and shakes her head. "I hate seeing him go, but I love watching him leave." Batgirl admitted quietly to herself with a small smile, and uses her own grapple gun, and fires it at the top, and uses the retracting mechanism to pull her up to the top of Arkham Asylum.

Robin gives Nightwing a look, that has him raise an eyebrow at the Boy Wonder. "What?" Robin smiles knowingly up at Nightwing, and folds his arms over his chest.

"I know that look...you're jealous because Batgirl's making eyes at the Newbie!" Nightwing feigns ignorance, and looks up at the top of the building.

"I don't know what you're talking about." Robin rolls his eyes under his domino mask, and takes out his grapple gun.

"You keep telling yourself that, Nightwing." Robin follows Batgirl's lead, and joins the group on the rooftop, with Nightwing joining them shortly afterwards.

Batman frowns at the time it took for his soldiers to get to the rooftop. "Don't keep me waiting. Every second counts. Now stand back...I'm placing a small charge on the glass of the large skylight. The High sonic frequency it emits will shatter the glass in ten seconds. Be prepared." Batman takes the charge out of his utility belt, and puts it dead center of the large skylight, and sets the timer for ten seconds. The ten seconds pass, and the skylight glass shatters. The falling glass gives the team of heroes the time they need to attack as they drop down from the new skylight entrance.

Batman throws several batarangs at Two-Face, and Bane knocking the pilfered guns out of their hands. Batgirl, Nightwing, and Robin throw their own versions of Batman's batarang and cause similar results for Calendar Girl, The Riddler, and Scarecrow as they had their weapons whacked out of their hands. Spider-Man shot out large globs of webbing from his web-shooters, and wrapped up Penguin, and Killer Croc. Peter knew that it would take more than webbing to take someone like Croc down, and he followed it up with a right-cross punch to Killer Croc's jaw with several of his sharp teeth flying out.

"Batman." Two-Face growled out with disdain in his voice, and nursed his aching hand.

"Robin!" The Riddler said with a sneer on his face looking over at the Boy Wonder.

"Well, if it isn't the bigger el pájaro, Nightwing." Bane states with a smug grin, and makes a *come here* motion with his large hand.

"Get ready for another makeover, Batgirl." Clayface warns, and morphs his clay hands into sharp bladed weapons.

"Hey, hey! Ova here! Do ya remember me, Spidey-Buns?!" Harley shout excitedly, and waves exuberantly over to Spider-Man with her free hand, and a big smile. Poison Ivy is staring at the newcomer while Harley is still hugging the life out her with her other arm.

Every member of the Bat Family takes a second to look over at Peter with varied looks on their faces.

"Oh yeah...I remember...wait...what did you call me?!"
