PLEASE READ MEEE:

In light of a recent review I found, but can no longer find (either the original poster has deleted or I just can't see it), I have been told that Nyx is 'an epitome of a Mary-Sue.' If this is something readers find, I appreciate you telling me (I actually had to look up what 'Mary-Sue' even meant!), I consider it constructive either way unless used in a bad context. But in this case, I'm a tiny bit concerned. But, is Nyx being 'an epitome of a Mary-Sue' necessarily a bad thing? I'd quite appreciate ans outlook on the situation, because I'm a wee bit concerned it might be for some. Thank you so much!

Origins of the Lost

One night was all she had left to remain human. One night to tell Midna everything. One night to tell Link everything. One night to remain awake, to remain human. One night to finish what she started the night she fled the mountains.

"The elders told stories of our unique beginnings all the time when I was a child. They told us stories of people of dark grey skin and marks of the Twili, markings that kept their youth for years and years and years. They claimed it was our ancestors that migrated to the bottom of the mountains, spread across to vast deserts and built the world of Hyrule… but there's no real way of knowing." Nyx looked up to the clear, vast open sky and sighed. "When I was little, the elders would say I was special. They and my mother were the only ones who could see me. Others thought my father had cursed my body with scars. They called me deformed and ugly."

Midna inclined her head to the side. "Who was your father?"

"I don't know. My mother hardly spoke of him. Whenever I asked, she refused to say anything."

"That's odd. No one was ever exiled under my rule."

"It was always freezing in Snowpeak. I grew up surrounded by the cold and snow. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life. Once every six months, lights would shine in the sky and we would dance until dawn. It was the most magical thing I had ever seen in my life. Until… until I was cursed…" As Nyx lowered her head, she absently put a hand where the gem would be clasped in the black leather that one made her necklace. Her marks pulsed slightly as anger bubbled within her. "I was trapped in that form for three moon cycles. I was led away by a masked stranger, someone I had never seen before…"

He seemed kind. He said he knew the perfect point on the mountain where the lights became their most beautiful. I believe him, of course. I didn't know that he was a monster. He turned to reveal his face to me and it was him. The False King, come to steal my human body away from me. He said to me: "I'll be back for you soon, my pet. When the Twilight engulfs this world of ice and snow, I will be back."

He drove the crystal into my skull and… it took me. I was terrified. I was in a body I had never known I could become before. I was trapped, tail between my legs and Goddess, it was freezing. I had never felt so cold in my life before. And when I arrived back at the village, search parties had already been sent out to find me. My mother, she was feverish. And no one, not even the elders, realised it was me. Whatever the False King had done, it had blocked their sight. The children were kinder than the adults. They fed me, sheltered me from the blizzards. My mother grew ill in the time I was trapped in that form. The elders said the grief was killing her inside and out. But I felt it. I felt the poison slowly spreading through her body, the blackness slowly eating her alive.

My mother died the night the Twilight came.

The tribe had known the day was coming, I think. The elders prophesized it the night I 'disappeared'. They spoke of a light the colour of twilight that would engulf the world forever. They spoke of a young man, clad in green, destined to save us from the evil. When the night came, so did the False King. I tried to fend my people from the Shadow Beasts, but there was nothing I could do. I was too weak. He was coming for me.

I felt ashamed. The people of Snowpeak do not flee from battle. They fight until the last man. And Goddess they did. All of them, even the children, driven by the grief of losing their parents, fought hopelessly against the False King and his army. When the last elder was killed, I had no choice.

I ran.

"When I ran, I was so afraid. So afraid of what Zant would do to me if he found me. In that time, I turned from beast to girl and the necklace was around my neck. I kept running, I didn't stop until I collapsed. I didn't realise I had been injured… but they were dead. That's all I could think. Everyone was gone, the children, the elders, my mother, my friends, even those damned bullies. All of them – just gone."

And suddenly, the tears came. Horrible sobs that couldn't stop. Her tears poured down her cheeks, falling to the grass beneath her. "All of them – dead. My entire family is – gone!"

She felt him at first, like a comforting warmth. He held her so gently, yet so firmly, that Nyx slowly felt her sobbing begin to cease. Round them, small animals had slowly made their way towards Nyx, cuddling near her shaking body. At the edge of the tiny clearing, the Skull Kid looked on, a sad expression on his painted face. Midna, who had begun to tear up herself, shook herself off and crossed her arms. She looked towards the sky, and found that dawn had approached. "Oh no, Nyx…"

Slowly, the girl turned to the sky and faced Link, bringing her hand to his cheek. "Link… Can I tell you something?"

"Anything, Nyx," Link whispered, grasping her pale hand in his.

"I… I… want you to know that–"

The Twilight emerged from the ground as the sun touched her skin, engulfing Nyx's body. The beast sprang away, confused and afraid, before disappearing into the forest.

"Nyx!" Link cried, scrambling to catch up with her. "Nyx…"

But it was too late. She was gone.
