Hey everyone, I'm finally back with another chapter for the story here. I'm sure you'll all enjoy it, so let's get to it. Be sure to check out the bottom for statements and my author's note.

Last Time: Ash broke the ice with Serena and introduced both her and Shauna to the concepts of battling. Shauna and Serena battled each other after encouragement from Ash with Shauna being the winner. The group then left Lumiose City and began their trek to Cyllage City for Ash's next gym battle.

Ash, Brock, Serena and Shauna had made great time on their trek to Cyllage City. At the rate they were going, they would be able to reach the city in two days. For Ash, the idea of getting his second badge was a big motivator and it excited him. If he kept up the pace he was going at, he would be able to regain his lost skill in no time. He looked at his watch and came to a stop. His sudden stop made his three companions turn to him.

"Is something wrong, Ash?" Serena asked.

"No, not at all." Ash shook his head. "I just figured we could stop for now. We've been walking for a few hours."

"Good idea. My feet are killing me." Shauna plopped down in the grass.

Brock set down his large bag and opened it. He decided that since they were taking a break that he would start cooking dinner. While he was preparing the campfire, Ash called forth Froakie, Gabite, and Charizard.

Ash wanted to be as prepared for his next gym battle as possible. He had done some research in advance and knew that the next gym leader used rock types. With Froakie and Gabite, he had two Pokémon that could effectively fight back. Charizard and Pikachu, although strong, would be at a disadvantage. He shook his head free of that last thought. Being at a disadvantage never stopped him before. If anything, it challenged him to defy that whole concept which was something he was quite good at doing.

"Alright, let's get to work!" Ash grinned at his team.

After warming them up with stretches, he had them line up. There were a series of large boulders in the field and they made excellent targets for practice. Ash walked off to the side and raised his voice for his team to hear him clearly.

"We're going to go to town on these boulders today!" He pointed at each boulder. "I want each of you to attack these things with all you've got!"

Endurance was key for battles. In his mind, only Charizard and Pikachu had the stamina and power to go through foe after foe. He needed each member on his team to do that. There could not be an imbalance of any kind. He folded his arms and watched as Froakie, Pikachu, Gabite and Charizard attacked their respective boulders. With each attack, the boulders got closer to breaking.

He walked up to Gabite and Froakie who looked winded having dished out a lot of power against their targets. Pikachu and Charizard on the other hand continued attacking away without the slightest hint of exhaustion. He nodded at his oldest Pokémon and turned his attention back to the younger two.

"Since you two are getting tired, let's do this." He looked towards the boulders. "Froakie, hit your boulder with the strongest Water Pulse you got. Gabite, finish yours with Dragon Claw."

Froakie and Gabite nodded at Ash and looked back at their targets. The first one to move was Gabite. He ran at his rock as fast as he could and channeled his power into his claws. The green aura radiated from them as he charged the rock and gave a vicious hack. Froakie managed to conjure a giant ball of water just a little bigger than himself before throwing it.

Two loud cracks echoed around the field. The water ball that Froakie released split the rock in half. The two halves fell to the grass with a loud thud and Froakie sat back, completely exhausted.

A massive fissure was visible on Gabite's rock. It trailed towards the bottom of the boulder where Gabite's claws were still stuck inside. After a hard tug, Gabite pulled his claws free and his rock all but collapsed into a large pile of rubble.

"Now that's what I'm talking about!" Ash beamed, looking at the two of them.

Their faces lit up at the praise and they walked up to him. Ash gently rubbed the top of their heads and after excusing himself from Charizard and Pikachu, led them to Brock. He had just finished cooking up some food for the group. Two plates of food were on the table specially made for Froakie and Gabite. He grabbed them and set them on the ground for them to eat and regain their energy.

"Charizard! Pikachu! Dinner!" Ash called for them.

The two hurried over to the plates as he set them down beside Froakie's and Gabite's. Once his team was busy stuffing their faces, Ash sat beside Serena. He watched as she fumbled around with making a small campfire. After a few unsuccessful attempts, he stepped in.

"Here," Ash said, taking the matches from her. "Campfires can be a pain to start."

He set the matches down and adjusted the sticks in the center of the pit. Serena helped him place the sticks in a small mound and picked up a handful of dry grass. She spread it over the sticks and Ash took the last of it and snaked it into the pile. Once the grass was in place, Ash pulled out a match, struck it and waited a moment for the flame to grow. He eased the match into the pile of sticks and some smoke began to rise a second later. It did not take long for the fire to grow and heat the campsite.

"Thanks for that." Serena looked at the ground embarrassed.

"No worries." Ash smiled back. "It takes time. Brock taught me this on my first journey."

"Only after you singed off your eyebrows after getting impatient," Brock added with a small smirk.

Ash rolled his eyes and felt his face heat up when Serena and Shauna asked Brock to tell them the story. What ended up happening was nothing short of something seen out of a comedy movie. Ash had tried everything to get a fire going. Rubbing sticks, using the survival knife to spark a fire, a magnifying glass with the remaining sunlight, and the list went on and on. Since he did not have Charmander by that point, he could not just have it started. With his determination and pride, he went to the last resort option. He took the can of lighter fluid that Brock had and sprayed more than the needed amount on the sticks. After he dropped the match, the fire erupted and all but burned his eyebrows clean off.

"You can't make that up!" Shauna pounded the ground laughing.

"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up." Ash shook his head.

"Oh, I am! Don't worry about that!"

Ash's shoulders shook with laughter at the memory. Although it was embarrassing to be reminded of it, it was funny looking back at it. Even if his experience as a fresh trainer was funny at points, it often times made him shudder. When it came to battling and just basic skills that a kid should know, he succeeded in taking the idiot level to a new tier. He got better with simple things like that as time went on, but it was still a grim reminder about how behind he was compared to his former rivals like Gary and Paul at the time.

He was broken form his thoughts when Brock set his plate down in front of him. The familiar scent of the delicious cuisine graced his nostrils and nearly made him drool. Nothing beat Brock's cooking and he could not wait to munch it down. He picked up his fork and shoveled in bite after bite. His forgotten appetite made itself known after he stopped his training. He was vaguely aware of the looks he was receiving from Shauna and Serena, but he did not care.

"I think I just lost my appetite." Shauna rested her fork on the table.

"That's Ash for you," Brock said sitting down. "You'll get used to it soon enough."

A loud belch echoed around the campsite and Ash patted his stomach.

"You haven't lost your touch with cooking, Brocko!" Ash grinned at his longtime friend.

"Thanks." Brock nodded back. "Do you want more?"

"Maybe later. I want to get back to training."

Ash got up from the table and turned to look at his team. All of them appeared to be refreshed from the dinner break and ready for more. He nodded back towards the open area they used earlier. His team lined up in the spots they were in previously and waited for him to give the command to start.

"Okay, this time we're doing speed drills," Ash spoke. "Charizard, I want you to attack Pikachu, Froakie and Gabite when it's their turn to go."

Charizard gave a curt nod and flew to the other side of the field to put space between himself and the others. Once he was ready, Ash had Pikachu, Froakie and Gabite form a line on the other end of the field. First up was Pikachu who had a cocky look on his face.

"Go!" Ash dropped his hand.

Pikachu took off in a yellow blur and ran towards Charizard. He easily dodged the Flamethrowers that were sent at him. With each step, Pikachu closed the gap between himself and Charizard. He sprung high into the air to avoid a Dragon Rage hit and soared over Charizard's head.

"Nice job, Pikachu!" Ash gave him a thumb up. "Froakie, you're next!"

Froakie waited for Pikachu to return to the line before he started moving. He hopped as fast as he could at Charizard who wasted no time in sending a Flamethrower at him. However, instead of dodging like Pikachu did, he held his hands out. A medium sized ball of water formed between his palms and he hurled it at the fiery attack. A loud hiss filled the area as the water evaporated. Froakie quickly jumped to the side and continued his charge.

Another Flamethrower came at him and he narrowed his eyes in concentration. He clapped his hands together and four copies of himself appeared. Froakie and his clones dodged the Flamethrower and started crossing each other's path on their dash. The attempt to fool Charizard appeared to be working, but it was short lived. A massive wall of fire came to life and trailed at Froakie and his clones. Thinking fast, Froakie's clones formed a small pile. He jumped on the top clone and pushed as hard as he could. He rocketed himself into the air and narrowly avoided the large wall of blistering heat.

He landed and shot at Charizard again. Another searing stream of fire shot at him. He took the chance and did a baseball slide under it. When he came to a stop, he looked up at Charizard with a smirk and got one in return.

"Way to go Froakie!" Ash clapped. "Good hustle!"

Froakie came back to the line and fell in behind Pikachu to let Gabite go. Just when Ash was about to give the command, a voice stopped him.

"Still one for unorthodox training I see?"

The voice sounded familiar and prompted him to turn around. When he found the source, his eyes widened in brief surprise. Long purple hair was the first thing that met his eye and then the classic impassive gaze.

"Paul?" Ash asked walking over to him.

"Ash." Paul nodded back. "I was wondering when I'd bump into you."

"You were looking for me?"

"Not exactly. I only knew you were here after I saw the news about that incident in Lumiose City."

Ash scratched the back of his head. He was glad to see a fellow rival again and was sure that just like him, was here to compete in the Kalos League. It had been over a year since he had seen Paul and he was curious to how much stronger he got since their last battle in the Sinnoh League.

"Ash, who's this?" Serena asked.

She had walked up to them with Shauna and Brock beside her.

"This is Paul." Ash smiled. "A rival of mine back from my Sinnoh journey."

"Wow. Nice to meet you."

Serena held out her hand which Paul shook. He did the same for Shauna and gave a nod of recognition to Brock.

"Are you on your way to Cyllage City, too?" Brock asked.

"Yeah. I got my first badge two days ago." Paul replied.

"Have you caught any new Pokémon?" Ash asked.

"Of course I did." Paul smirked back. "Knowing you, you want to battle, right?"

Ash grinned and nodded. He was eager to see Paul's new Pokémon and how much stronger he got. Since Paul wanted to keep it short and sweet, they decided it would be a one on one fight. Ash had Froakie take position in front of him and waited for Paul to take his spot on the opposite side of the field. Once he was in his spot, he pulled a ball from his belt.

"Tyrunt, standby for battle!" Paul tossed the ball out.

The ball opened with a loud snap and a tall, two legged dinosaur looking creature appeared. Its appearance made Ash pull out his upgraded Pokédex to get more information. He pointed it at the Pokémon and it came to life.

"Tyrunt, the strong jaw Pokémon. Although most are extinct, some are rumored to be lurking in mountains and caves. Its jaws are strong enough to crunch through steel," the Pokédex beeped back.

Ash was a little surprised at his rival's lucky find. He pocketed his Pokédex and narrowed his eyes at Paul. If his capture methods were still the same, then Tyrunt had shown a lot of promise and power. He and Froakie needed to stay alert.

"Show me what you've got!" Paul called out.

"Gladly!" Ash smirked back. "Froakie, start off with Double Team!"

Froakie split into a handful of copies and ran at Tyrunt with the intent of confusing him. They crossed paths with each other dozens of times to keep the real Froakie under the radar. Once they were within range, Paul made his move.

"Use Roar!"

The loud cry that came from Tyrunt sent shivers down everyone's spine. It was vicious and intimidating. Froakie and his copies ground to a halt, but it did not stop there. His copies all flickered and retreated back to him. With this, Paul smirked and followed up with his next attack.

"Stomp, now!" Paul pointed at Froakie.

The ground shook as Tyrunt charged Froakie and brought his leg up high. Froakie managed to shake off the effects of the previous attack. He narrowly dodged Tyrunt's leg and rolled away from his next one. With each dodge, Froakie found himself unable to get away. Although he trusted Ash, he decided to go with his own attack to escape.

He pulled out two handfuls of his frubbles and chucked them at Tyrunt. The first set missed, but the second met its mark and hit his foot. He smirked and dodged the next stomp easily. When Tyrunt's foot hit the ground, it instantly glued to it.

"Use Water Pulse!" Ash hollered.

Froakie was way ahead of Ash as he jumped up high. The small ball of water formed between his hands and he threw hit hard at Tyrunt. The water splashed after hitting Tyrunt in the face. This got a roar of anger from Tyrunt.

"Bite through those frubbles!" Paul ordered.

Tyrunt's razor sharp teeth were visible for everyone to see. It only took one quick snap of the jaw to penetrate through the sticky substance and free himself. He turned around and glared at Froakie who stared calmly back at him. He bent his head down low and charged at Froakie newfound speed.

The sudden increase of speed surprised Froakie a little bit and he once again had to dodge Tyrunt's wild attack. When he got behind Tyrunt, he jumped high and formed another ball of water in his hands.

"Intercept Froakie, now!" Paul yelled.

"Double Team, Froakie!" Ash countered back.

Tyrunt wheeled around and got Froakie back in his sights, but only saw Froakie split into copies once again. He swung his tail and managed to cut through half of the copies, dissolving them. His tail continued for the real Froakie, but he managed to avoid it midair. The Water Pulse flew from Froakie's hand, but he turned just in time to avoid a hit to the face. It splashed on his leg and he smirked. His teeth gleamed in the light and he lunged forward, jaws open wide.

He scooped Froakie up in his mouth and clamped down hard. Froakie's face scrunched up in pain and he let out a loud cry of pain. He gave a wild toss and sent Froakie across the field. He watched with a smirk as the frog bounced and came to a stop in the dirt.

"Froakie, are you okay?" Ash called out.

Froakie quickly got back to his feet and nodded. Although he told Ash he was fine, that last attack hurt him more than he thought it would. He tried to take a step forward, but sunk to a knee.

"What's going on?" Ash furrowed his brow.

"Tyrunt's Strong Jaw ability increases the power of biting attacks," Paul answered for him. "What Froakie just felt was twice as powerful as the regular Bite attack."

"Crap!" Ash clenched his fists.

Now he knew why Paul caught Tyrunt in the first place. The ability Tyrunt had was similar to what some of his other Pokémon had when he traveled in Sinnoh. They all had an ability to turn the tide of a battle at a second's notice. He had to give his old rival credit for sticking to his methods as a trainer.

"Froakie, use Bubble!" Ash yelled.

"Tyrunt, use Bide!" Paul shot back.

Froakie leapt up high and took a deep breath while Tyrunt stood his ground. A large stream of bubbles escaped Froakie's mouth and shot at Tyrunt. The bubbles popped and splashed as they hit him, but he resisted the pain. When the attack ended, Froakie landed back on the ground and stared at Tyrunt. He then held out his hands and a Water Pulse generated in each one.

Fighting through the pain, Froakie charged at Tyrunt to get inside his guard. He only made it halfway before Tyrunt glowed a light red. The aura vanished as soon as it came, but what happened next forced Froakie to stop his attack. The power that Tyrunt had stored up was released and darted at Froakie in the form of a pure white beam.

Froakie had to squint to tolerate the blinding light. He tossed the two balls of water at Tyrunt with only one successfully hitting him.

"Double Team, now!" Ash called out.

Froakie clapped his hands and eight clones appeared in front of him. The clones got in front of Froakie and formed a small wall to shield him. There was a loud boom and a gust of wind kicked up when the attack hit its mark. The field shook from the raw power of the attack, and the smoke left from it blocked Froakie from view.

For Ash, he was concerned for his new partner. That last attack had more than enough juice to finish Froakie off and there was a strong chance that it did. The smoke cleared and he waited for the end result. He let out a sigh of relief when Froakie was still standing, despite the damage he took. Upon closer inspection, Ash could see that the clones appeared to absorb a good amount of the attack, but it was not enough to keep Froakie from harm. He made a mental note to make that into a new improvised move down the road.

"Froakie, get in close and use Water Pulse!" Ash smirked.

Paul watched Froakie form another Water Pulse and dash at Tyrunt. He was fairly impressed with what he saw Froakie do. He said nothing and watched Tyrunt sidestep Froakie's attack. Although he was glad that Ash was still holding true to his own tactics to keep their battle interesting, he could not help but feel that Ash had regressed since their last battle. He still did well with improvising and turning the momentum of a fight, but he seemed to be trying out a new style that was not doing him much justice.

"What happened to you in Unova?" Paul narrowed his eyes. "You're better than this."

He gave Tyrunt the command to Bite, but his attack missed Froakie who jumped to the side and formed another Water Pulse. Froakie drove the ball of water hard into Tyrunt's chest and stunned him long enough to leave an opening.

"Follow up with Pound!" Ash gave a punch of his own.

Froakie's fist glowed white and he jumped up. His fist connected with the bottom of Tyrunt's jaw. Tyrunt stumbled back, but was quick to recover. He swung his tail and managed to hit Froakie into the air.

"Time to end it!" Paul clenched his fist. "Jump and use Stomp, now!"

Tyrunt jumped up high and tucked his feet in. He stomped down hard when he was just above Froakie. Froakie plummeted to the ground and hit it with a loud thud, kicking up a small cloud of dust. The ground trembled when Tyrunt landed and towered over the hole Froakie made.

The victory was short lived when Froakie suddenly dispersed.

"What?" Paul's eyes snapped open. "When did he use Double Team?"

His mind raced when he retraced the last set of moves. It happened somewhere after Froakie was sent airborne from Tyrunt's tail. He looked up towards the sky and sure enough, Froakie was diving headfirst at Tyrunt with two Water Pulses in his hands. A small smirk came to his face.

"Not bad, Ash," he muttered. "Tyrunt, intercept with Bite!"

Tyrunt looked up and opened his mouth wide. His mouth closed quickly when Froakie threw the first Water Pulse into it. While he sputtered in surprise, Froakie drove the second Water Pulse onto the top of his head. Tyrunt let out a loud growl after being hit with the attack and glared at Froakie who looked cocky at the clever trick.

With quick reflexes, Tyrunt brought his head back and then forward. The hard hit to the head stunned Froakie and he opened his jaws wide. He picked Froakie up and crunched down before tossing Froakie away again.

"Don't let him fool you again!" Paul glared at him.

Tyrunt nodded and kept his eyes sharp for any movement. He waited for Froakie to get up and got his wish a second later. With Froakie on his last limbs, the battle was close to its end. His teeth became visible when he smirked at his newfound rival.

"Knowing Ash, he's going to try something with Double Team again." Paul glanced at Froakie. "And if I'm right, he'll go for a sneak attack to Tyrunt's blind spot."

He nodded and went with his gut decision. There was no doubt in his mind and he got ready to give his last command.

"You and Tyrunt put up a heck of a fight." Ash smirked at him. "But we're gonna' win this one!"

"Don't be so sure!" Paul retorted.

"Froakie, charge Tyrunt and use Double Team!"

"Tyrunt, standby!"

Tyrunt stood his ground and watched Froakie split into extra copies once again. He kept his eyes focused on the real Froakie kept calm. Just like before, the clones tried to throw him off by crossing paths, but he was not fooled.

"Water Pulse, now!" Ash yelled.

"Standby!" Paul called again.

Froakie and his clones all had a Water Pulse in ready to go, but Tyrunt had not lost sight of the original one. The clones started running circles around him but he remained calm and put his trust into Paul.

Meanwhile, Paul had kept watch on the real Froakie and it had played out like he expected. He lost track of Froakie when he ran circles around Tyrunt, but he kept to his original belief with Froakie attacking from the front with a clone, but truly coming from behind. When the clones stopped moving, he wasted no time.

"Tackle, now!"

Tyrunt bent low and charged headfirst at the Froakie in front of him. It dispersed a second later. He smirked when he saw Froakie jump from behind Tyrunt.

"Got you!" Paul thought. "Swing your tail, now!"

Wham! With a flick of his tail, Tyrunt delivered a swift hit to Froakie's face. Froakie's Water Pulse and clones vanished and he was sent through the air back to Ash. The latter caught him a second later and had a look of pride on his face.

"Nice job, Froakie." Ash stood up. "We'll get them next time."

"Froakie is unable to battle! The winners are Paul and Tyrunt!" Brock indicated to the purple haired teen.

Paul said nothing and walked up to Tyrunt. He gave him a silent nod after patting his back. Once he returned Tyrunt to his ball, he turned his gaze back to Ash. For the most part he enjoyed the battle, but he was disappointed that his rival did not seem like the one he fought back in Sinnoh. He had seen what happened to Ash in the Unova League when he struggled against Trip and ultimately lost to a kid who showed up to their battle short one Pokémon. The Ash he was familiar with was smarter than that and more competent with battling.

When he first saw his rival's outcome in the league, he thought he may have caught a bad break. Now that he was able to battle him for the first time in over a year, he almost wished it was just a stroke of bad luck. The battle only confirmed that Ash's skill waned over his last journey.

He shook his head and turned to leave, but was stopped when Ash called out to him.

"Great battle, Paul!" He grinned. "We'll win next time!"

"There won't be a next time at this rate." Paul glanced back at him.

"What do you mean?"

Paul sighed and turned to face him with a small glare.

"I was hoping that you got stronger after your journey in Unova, but what I just saw was pathetic," he replied.

"What do you mean?" Ash asked,

"What happened to you in Unova?"

Ash fell silent and looked towards the ground. Now he knew what Paul was getting at. He knew that Paul would have gotten stronger since their last meeting, but he felt he did not do too badly for their first rematch. But Paul had noticed and called him out on it.

"I screwed up. That's what happened," Ash answered.

"I saw what happened to you in the Unova League," Paul continued. "I mean, you go from taking out two legendary Pokémon in the Sinnoh League and then lose to a novice trainer and his Lucario. Are you kidding me?"

Ash felt his mouth twitch at the at the reminder about his loss to Tobias and Cameron. He wanted to open his mouth to defend himself, but found he could not. Paul was right. He looked up to see Paul walking back towards the road.

"Even though I enjoyed this battle, I won't battle you again until you shape up," Paul said over his shoulder.

"It won't take me long, so be ready to go again soon!" Ash shot back.

Paul smirked and raised his hand in a small wave before walking again. Ash watched his old rival until he disappeared from view. His mind replayed everything Paul told him. While he was wrapped in his thoughts, he did not notice Serena place her hand on his shoulder.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"Huh? Oh, yeah, I'm fine." Ash nodded, forcing a smile.

"You sure?"

"I'm fine."

Serena frowned when she saw Ash force the smile. She knew he was lying, but she did not want to press the issue. She only nodded and watched Ash carry Froakie over to the campfire to provide first aid to him. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Shauna and Brock looking at Ash.

"Who does that jerk think he is?" Shauna ranted, referring to Paul.

"Don't worry about it, Shauna," Brock assured her. "That was the way they acted towards each other back in Sinnoh."

"I guess tact isn't in that guy's vocabulary, right?"

Brock let out a laugh. Although Paul was not tactful, he grew to respect Ash after he beat him in the Sinnoh League. And it was because of that, that he hit Ash with those harsh jabs. He enjoyed having Ash as a rival and seeing him struggle as much as he did during the Unova League no doubt left him disappointed. Maybe even more so than what happened with his brother Reggie when he failed against Brandon.

"Trust me. He may not be kind with his words, but he did that to help Ash," Brock said.

"Whatever, but he was still a jerk about it." Shauna shook her head.

"You'll see soon enough. Ash will bounce back from this, just like he always does."

"I guess we'll see."

Shauna walked back to the campfire with Serena to check on Ash and Froakie, with Brock following close behind.

That's the chapter, everybody. I apologize that these are coming in later than you like, but this is a side story and I'm also busy with two jobs, so yeah. Anyway, stay posted and I will update when I update. Check out he statements below here. -CaptainPrice

Statements:

1.) Awesome job with the critique last chapter. That's what I like to see and what we need to start doing for all the stories we read. That whole "Awesome!", "Update soon!", "Great Update/Chapter!" is a bullshit review. If I offended anyone who writes those kinds of things as a review, then tough. I'm being real here because those reviews offer nothing to help an author.

2.) Since I kept getting questions about this, I will answer this here and now. Even though the answers were in the story. Regarding Ash, his age, catching pokémon and all of that. He is fifteen in this story, will turn sixteen eventually. He will not capture pokémon he bonded with in the past, regarding his team, it will be different from the anime since it conflicts with the current lineup I have in this story.

3.) I brought Paul back since he was my favorite rival for Ash. He may have been a giant douche, but he pushed Ash to get strong all throughout Sinnoh. So outside of my OC Tom, he is Ash's main rival. And while we're on it, yes. He did beat Ash, but hey, better him than anyone else, right?

4.) Those of you telling me that I should update faster... the answer is no. If the site paid me 1200 a month like my other jobs, maybe I would, but since writing fanfiction does not pay the bills, what do you think is more important to me now?

5.) Yes. I changed what Roar did for this battle. I know it sends the opponent's pokémon out of the battle and replaces it with another, but since it was a one on one battle for this chapter, I wanted to change it a little. On that note, I imagine Froakie's clones for double team to be similar to Naruto's, so from now on, they'll function similar to them.
