While most writers are writing fics to get their OTPs to hook up, I try to write a good story, much like some writers here. While some writers write formulaic fics like vampire-falls-for-mortal-girl or other things, I write a goddamn combination Jidaigeki/Western using characters from a goddamn shoujo manga and taking one of the characters and turning him into a total badass while adding a character from my own universe and making him badass too. While most writers write romance/crappy yaoi fics, I try to focus on the plot, or if it's a slice-of-life, focus on the relationships between the characters. Yes, I do write the occasional romance, but I tend to keep it as a secondary plot instead. While many writers use fucking crappy pop music, I show and make clear that I'm into music that will make most people's ears bleed! The Beatles, though, everybody likes them and that is a great thing. While many writers (Possibly 25 percent) go for 'goth' crap, I make the characters just be themselves. Many writers do this, I'm not knocking on everyone. The point is, I'd rather write things I want to write, like many hopeful writers on this site. And unfortunately, I don't get a lot of hits because people would rather read formulaic crap than a Western/Jidaigeki! I write what I want to write. I don't want to follow cliches of fandom. I want to write characters the way I want to. They have personalities and are just like you and me, even if they had wings. If I ever wrote a winged character, I would focus more on the content of their character than their wings. I like to write a good story, even if it's slice-of-life. If I do something that's been done I try to put my spin on it instead of following everyone else. And like I said, I have my own interests. I put heart into my characters. I don't like it when someone calls them Mary Sues; because they're not. If they do, I'll either tell them they're not. But if someone warns me said character might become a Mary Sue, I'll try and fix that. A lot of my characters are from Chicago. That doesn't mean they're cub fans; I hate the cubs. I will put my characters through hell or do terrible things to them but I'll never make them a cubs fan. If I do, they're a pathetic butt monkey. If they're a twins fan, however, they're purely evil and have no redeeming qualities (twins suck!). Stories explained Jimmy & Kyo: A story that had Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket as an American football player. The background is that he saw a football game on TV (The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers) and decided he wanted to play. That was about to years prior to the events of the story. And he's actually pretty good, because I saw in one chapter/episode that he could run really fast and for long distances (the endurance run, where they first meet Haru Sohma). So I thought that if he got a little bigger and had some practice, he could be a good wide receiver. He's not the best, but he's pretty good. In this story, his roommate is a character of mine, Jimmy Michaels, who made his debut in a FictionPress story called Jimmy & Taylor, which chronicles his freshman year at the University of Central Florida. However, that story never got off the ground, so I've revived the character for this story. It's A Grand Old Team to Play For: Taichi Kamiya of Digimon playing for the Celtic Football Club of Glasgow, Scotland. There is something I need to explain: It takes place in the same universe as Jimmy & Kyo. And that the existence of Digimon is still a secret. The story also features another OC, Scott Michaels. Technically, he's younger than Jimmy (even though he's his older brother), because I only created him recently. And actually, I imply that Tai's better than Scott. But I won't confirm that here, either. Power Rangers GPX: The explanation here is simple: Power Rangers on The Swordsman and The Gunslinger: The Western/Jidaigeki I talk about in my little rant. It stars the characters of Fruits Basket (Kyo & Tohru) as Japanese immigrants in the Old West, along with two characters from my 'Michaelsverse' (Jimmy Michaels and Karen McKenzie) as a gunslinger/former drifter and a shopkeeper, respectively. It does have elements of the Jidaigeki, like the swordsman, but it is essentially a Western because it takes place in the Old West and has Western tropes. Universes: Michaelsverse: "It's A Grand Old Team to Play For", "Jimmy & Kyo", "Stanley Cup Champions", "The Swordsman and the Gunslinger" (AU), "Power Rangers GPX" (off-shoot) McCartheyverse: "First Encounter", "Battle of Chicago" To anyone who submits an anonymous review and insults me personally: FUCK. YOU. That is all. Things on that irritate me: 1. Bad writing. This one is obvious, but I must make a point: There are too many bad and obvious spelling and grammar errors. For example, when someone is talking, you always start another paragraph when somebody else is talking, like this: "Sample dialogue" said X character "Sample dialogue" said y character. I hate to sound like a grammar nazi, but when a paragraph looks like this: "sample dialogue" said x character. "sample dialogue" said y character, it's just wrong! And if you're teenagers, you're in high school... or finishing school, or whatever the equivalent is! You should know this by now! I'm a college grad, I know this stuff! If I wrote like that and my English/Language Arts teachers saw that, I'd get an F! And also, "there" means a location. "Their" is a possessive noun. "They're" is a contraction of "They are". Know the difference! 2. Questions in the summary. This one I've done, but I've done it differently from other people. However, it annoys the heck out of me when a story summary ends with the author asking "Can they do X?" There's so many of these it drives me crazy and ensures that I'm not going to read the story. Change the damn summary! Make it interesting, I want to know the plot, for cryin' out loud! Using a question is not making your story mysterious, if that's what you want. Now, I know I've done that myself, but looking at my stories, I did it differently. On the "Sten Des Sudens" summary, I end it with phrase "Maybe things will get better... right?" That simple phrase adds uncertainty. A little subtlety goes a long way. 3. Lack of subtlety. Speaking of which, sometimes there can be too much over-analyzing. One story I read went on a what could have been five-page explanation on how much two characters love each other. It was fine at first, but after 3 or four paragraphs, it was like, "ENOUGH ALREADY!! I GET IT!!!" There's a reason they say "show, don't tell". Not to say you shouldn't tell, but showing how much these characters care about each other through their actions is fine. And again, I think the audience is smart enough to see through subtle narration. 4. Favers. These are people who do nothing but fave other people's stories. They usually have no profiles and never review. Ugh, they drive me CRAZY! I hate these people because I don't know if they're actually reading the material instead of just finding the story, reading a couple lines and then faveing the story. It is not a good way of telling people if the story is good. A piece of shit can get more faves than a truly amazing piece of work, that doesn't meant he piece of shit is better. If you like my stories, REVIEW THEM. And speaking of reviews, 5. Bad reviews. UGH, these drive me CRAZY! ! ! These are reviews where it makes it seem as if the reviewer didn't even bother to read the damn story. Something like 'cool chapter' or 'nice' isn't good enough! Now, if you were so amazed that the only thing you can say is "WOW!" or "NICE!" I can understand, but otherwise, those reviews are crap! I'm not sure if I can speak for every author, but everyone here is trying to improve their writing. Saying one or two words is not helping! I can't tell if you actually read the chapter, for cryin' out loud! Give a detailed review! 6. Profile copy-paste text. This one is not as bad as the last five, but it can get really annoying. I'm talking about people who copy/paste things like "Paste here if you believe X" onto their profile. Are you trying to look cute? Well, you're not! Especially if you past something like "Copy/paste if you've accepted Jesus Christ as your savior", I DON'T FUCKING CARE! ! ! I don't care about your little lists, I don't care about what you want in a boyfriend, I don't! Fucking! CARE! ! ! Sorry, but I just had to get that out of my system. 7. Shitty "Next-Gen" stories. These can work, let's get it out there ahead of time. But in places like the Power Rangers section, these things are practically EVERYWHERE. Face it, your shitty "next-gen" story is unoriginal if it's been done a million fucking times. I don't care about the kids of the original Power Rangers, especially if it's obvious all you're doing is using them as stand-ins for the originals. Just stop already. They're not their parents, give 'em their own fucking history. 8. Immaturity: I can tell you're 14 years old if you're writing vindictive, shitty one-shots bashing Relena Darlain/Peacecraft (which, by the way, stopped being cool/funny/acceptable the moment it started). You wanna be a writer? Stop being so fucking petty. Oh. Wait... 9. "Ron the Death Eater" Fics: Related to above. Executed well, these could be good. However, since TV Tropes has this trope, by now it's obviously gotten old. If you're going to make a character who is obviously good a bastard in your fic, make it good! Otherwise, you're using a shitty technique! 10. "Draco In Leather Pants" fics: No, Loki is not going to love you. If he came near you, you should probably RUN. 11. Everything Mentioned in this guy's profile: Worldmaker did a far better job with this than I can, going over many points found in bad Harry Potter fics, but can be found in every fandon. READ IT. NOW. I'll probably think of more things eventually. But these are my biggest gripes with . Does that mean I'm going to leave? Probably not, I just wanted to share them. If you have a question or whatever, feel free to PM me, I'll gladly respond. |
