I'm a professional writer (nonfiction and poetry), editor, and writing teacher, so one of my pet peeves is when an author begs for feedback, I give some suggestions that could make him/her a better author, or make his/her story more professional, and the author's response is along the lines of: "I won't make any changes. Glad you liked the parts you liked!" So you don't actually want feedback, just blind praise? Got it. Sigh. I hate it when an author writes a great story, then instantly kills the buzz with an insecure author's note. Go for confidence! Another fanfic pet peeve is when writers get subconsciously misogynistic. Female characters do not always have to be each others' enemies. Remember Shine Theory: I don't shine if you don't shine!

Okay, enough pet peeves. Here's what I love about fanfic: 1- Viewers are actively engaged in the worlds of their favorite shows. 2- Sometimes the "real" writers create too much tension and drag out the will-they-or-won't-they for too long! We need a release, darn it! 3- I love experiencing new writing and new writers. Everyone has an equal voice here, not just the people who've managed to navigate the hellish maze of submissions, agents and contracts that exist in publishing. 4-It's great to have such a large and appreciative audience!
