A big THANK YOU to all who participated. Turn out for this challenge was much higher than anticipated, and we were delighted to welcome several new authors into the Twilight Fandom through the rookie category. Special thanks to our judges: Justine Lark, Hoosier Mama, TrainLinz, (veteran category) Scarlett71177, Ruby Wednesday EliseShaw (rookie category), for their careful reading and thoughts in the selection of the judges’ picks. We’d like to also recognize those who took the time, even though they were not entrants in the contest or judges, to read and review every or nearly every fic in the contest. Feedback is a wonderful gift, and readers deserve recognition as well. Many thanks to: izzzyy for your intrepid readership. All authors are free to now post their fics on the sites of their choosing. Contest Entries posted on FFnet will be gathered into the contest C2, available below (authors, please send a PM with the story ID # of your posted story). At this time, tentative plans have been made to repeat this contest in the fall or next spring; we’ll keep adding to the C2 as we go! Winners' Banners links have been sent via PM. Many thanks to sleepyvalentina for her help with the official banner. And the winners are… Rookie Category: First Place: “Souls to Waste” by Kyrene once Blood Roses Veteran Category: First Place: “Radiant Possibility” by Scarlett71177 Judges’ Picks: In addition to the voted categories, the judges also judged the anonymous entries to award special commendation. Below are their choices, along with a brief statement or judges’ commentaries about why it was chosen: (paraphrased from the judges’ commentaries—verbatim comments in quotes.) Rookie Category: This fic was selected for the authenticity of its characters, and its “simple, but effective” prose. The piece does “a terrific job of filling in the missing pieces of Edward's thoughts and giving Veteran Category: This fic was selected for its ability to explain Rosalie's motivations behind changing Emmett, and the way it gives her a sense of “humanity and vulnerability.” As one judge put it, “This has been told before, but never this well.” “A Life Eternal” by CorrinaTFF This fic was chosen for the “musical” quality of its prose, and its effectiveness at showing Carlisle's internal struggle with himself and the situation of changing Edward. “Madonna and Child” by kimmydonn In filling in an important family bonding scene missing from the canon, this fic evokes compassion even in non-Rosalie fans, and gives “new depth” to the imprinting. Thank you to all for participating! Tentative plans have been made to repeat this challenge either later this year or early next. We hope to see you back! About the contest That's right. We want more canon! You may have read the "Canon Fodder" articles on TLYDF (Part One, Part Two). Well, now it's your turn to give it a go. We want a 1,500-8,000 word fic (based on the word count in a .doc file without header and A/Ns) that is canon. Be creative, be innovative, but don't color outside the lines! Everything you write must be supported by the facts given in canon. Some examples of types of fics you might try (see the TLYDF articles above for examples of these stories): Backstory, Sidestory, or Future -- how did the characters get here and where are they going? Missing Moment -- some bit of canon that was left out of the story. Give us a scene we didn't see! Alternate POV -- tell us a little bit about how another character viewed the same scene. Or anything else you might think of...there's a lot of room even when you're thinking inside the box! Entries Entries will be anonymous, and will be judged by popular vote in two, rating-specific categories for first, second, and third place. In addition, a panel of judges will read to award special honorable mentions/ judges' highlights. Judging will be conducted anonymously--only the administrator will have access to author information until the contest is over. (The reason for the low ceiling on wordcount is to make it easier for voters to read all the fics before choosing their favorite.) Your entry should be an unpublished one-shot that is not part of another story, and it may not be continued until the contest is over. All ratings of fics are welcome. Sex scenes are certainly NOT required. Provided the number of entries support this, entries will be voted on in two categories according to rating--K-T, and M. If you choose to explore the darker pasts of some of the canon women, please make sure your fic is marked appropriately for any potentially triggering material. Fics which glorify or write explicitly about rape will not be accepted. Fics portraying incest, pedophilia, and bestiality will also be disqualified from entering. Fics may adhere to either the book canon or the movie canon (for an example of a movie canon fic, please see "Assombrado" by Essay33), and should specify which canon is being used. Extras and information from SM's website and/or the Twilight Lexicon may be discarded as canon, however, an author choosing to do so should indicate in an A/N which of these pieces of information are not being considered as canon. Breaking with the information given in the books (or the movies, if it is a movie-canon fic) will make a story ineligible. Specific questions about whether an idea would fall within canon are more than welcome via PM. Who's Eligible Our goal is to provide more "fodder" of canon fics for the fandom hence the name. To encourage writers who have written no or very little canon to try their hands at it, we will be separating all entries into two categories for judging and voting: "Vets" are any writers who have three or more canon fics already posted in any of the Twilight fan fiction archives, and these fics will be voted on separately from the "rookies." Feel free to advertise your participation in the contest to your readers and to encourage them to come read, review, and vote on the entries. You can find some icons and banners to pimp the contest here: small banner, large banner, icon. (Please save to your own photo host!) However, we ask that you please preserve the anonymity of the entries. Any author found to be revealing herself as the author of a specific fic will be disqualified from the voting. Fics will be released for posting and authors will be revealed when voting and judging have been completed. While we reserve the right to have additional voting rounds if needed, we anticipate running no later than May 10, 2010. Collaborations are welcome, as long as they meet the requirements above of being unpublished and unrelated to a published story. Authors may submit a total of TWO stories, whether they are individual author or co-author. Submitted Fics Veteran Category: Madonna and Child, T Rookie Category: A Hole in the World, T |
