Author has written 40 stories for Speed Racer, Starblazers, Battle of the Planets, and ThunderCats. Well, hullo there. My name is Frederick P. Kopetz, but am usually called "Freddo" by my friends. I am 42 years old, and I am married to a wonderful woman named Gail. We are both anime and science-fiction fans, and have been ever since our teens. I am a member of a new writers' community known as "Inguz's Writer's Community." It includes several writers with shared interests, known as: 1: Meira Evenstar 2: Seeshy is sexii 3: Freddo (me) 4: Paulc 5: Baka Gaijin30 6: MichelLover67 7: Zimo 8: Hipathya 9: Inguz You can also join this community: please see how at: http:///Profile.jsp?MemberId=19381601 Thanks. Also, I must thank a great friend here on my profile; the wonderful writer known as Goldangel2. She has been very helpful with reviews, feedback, and advice about my fics, and she is a cool person. As you will note a little further on down in my outline, one of my favorite anime series is "Star Blazers", the Americanized version of "Space Battleship Yamato". The graphic to the right is from this show, and it portrays Leader Desslok (the tall man with blond hair and blue skin), Captain Derek Wildstar (hero-type with the high-collared jacket), Nova (the beautiful blond next to him), Mark Venture (Derek's rival, and best friend in green & white), Sandor (genius engineer, above, in blue and white) Dr. Sane (the funny potato-head), IQ-9 (robot) and Captain Avatar (the majestic statue), who was the first skipper of the Argo/Yamato (the huge blue & red space battleship above Desslok). I have an idea for an original series of sorts jelling in my head, but in the meantime, I keep myself busy as a hobby by writing fan fiction. I shall now give a precis' of some anime/SF works that I enjoy; some I have written fan fiction about...others, I might write about. STAR BLAZERS/SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO: While this was not the first anime series I ever saw, it was the first one which I saw that I knew was Japanese and from the fandom that surrounded thjis very popular cult series in the early 80's (back when anime fandom was just getting started in the US), and the first show that I ever wrote any fan fiction for. The story arc is very complex, and a bit hard to describe here, but the characters, scripts, and music are top-notch, even thogh the animation is not as "flashy" as the anime made today, it holds up very well considering it was first made in 1974. It is truly a classic of anime, and was the first anime series to have its own cult following in the US. Needless to say, this series is the one I've written the most fan fiction for, and I owe Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto a big round of applause for making such a great series. The characterization is top-notch, and the characters themselves...well, anyone who "knows" Captain Avatar, Derek Wildstar, his girlfriend/fiancee/wife Nova Forrester, his friends Mark Venture and Stephen Sandor, his "lost" brother Alex Wildstar, and their arch-nemesis Leader Desslok (who was the template for Char Aznable, Vegeta, and a hundred other anime villains who are also honorable characters) knows what I'm talking about. If not, you've got to see this series and its great mecha, the foremost of which is the mighty space battleship Yamato/Argo herself. This is a ship that could give the Starship Enterprise a run for its money, and it looks cool, even though the design is sort of improbable. Great bit of design work by Leiji Matsumoto, also known for putting pirate galleons and railway trains in space in his CAPTAIN HARLOCK and GALAXY EXPRESS 999 series. SPEED RACER/MACH GO GO GO: This was the anime series I loved the most as a kid. Most everyone knows this classic series, and it is a part of American pop culture by now, due to its being shown over and over again. The adventures of Speed, Trixie, Racer X, Sprite and Chim Chim are fascinating, and this show has a great cast of supporting characters and villains, as well. Especially the Car Acrobatic Team. And the mecha...the Mammoth car, the Mach Five...unforgettable. This is another great show I have written fanfic about. DOCTOR WHO. A vagabond wanderer from an advanced civilization leaves his corrupt home planet to go out into the universe and do good in a time-ship forever stuck in the form of a British Police Box. From Britain, this is the longest-running SF series ever, and due to return to the screen in its mother country next year with a new series. The good Doctor has been played by nine actors so far (and within continuity, since the Doctor is a Time Lord, member of a race that can regenerate and change appearance and some personality quirks when he mortally injured or ill.) My favorite portrayals of The Doctor were done by John Pertwee (a "Dandy", as the First Doctor, William Hartnell, called him in an episode where he met himself), Tom Baker (he of the 12-foot long scarf and jelly babies, the most famous Doctor) and Sylvester McCoy (Time's Champion, as he calls himself, and a very dark, mysterious schemer, even though he is still a good character). I have not written a Doctor Who fanfic on its own yet, but the Doctor (or Doctors) appear in my STAR BLAZERS and SPEED RACER works as guest characters. Fits, somehow, since the Doctor is rather unpredictable and has this habit of showing up in odd times and places in his own series. I mean, what can you say about a man whose scarf was knitted by Nostradamus' wife? ;-) GATCHAMAN/BATTLE OF THE PLANETS: If SPEED RACER was the first series put out by Tatsunoko, GATCHAMAN/BOTP was the series that made it. This series involves a sentai team of five young people united as one to fight the strange, twisted forces of Selectra/Spectra, led by the evil Generalissimo X/Great Spirit and commanded by the evil but tragic Berg Katze/Zoltar. This series suffered a bit in its transition from Japan to the US, but if the translated series is good (which it is), the original Japanese version, with its complex backstory and tragic but interesting backgrounds for both G-Force and Katze happens to be even better yet. One can obtain this show on DVD, but those who are interested in the full story are strongly advised to find the DVD's for the original GATCHAMAN and watch them. I'm planning to write some fanfic for this series, too...just have to do some more research and also must let an idea I have in my head jell for a bit. Well, it's been nice meeting all of you here, and I hope you have fun and enjoy my stories! Best wishes... --Freddo |
