And there you go, Naruto style. So, ive decided to add a small rant section. You see, i was originally addicted to this website when i was around 12, and as a 12 year old kid who liked legend of zelda,(but had a rough time with the water temple) i was looking for some helpfull tips online, and i found something that fasinated me. a "fanfiction", at the time i had no idea there was a site like this. I read the story, obviously. "The Return" by Roze Zemlya, was brilliantly written, masterfully told, and all around professional grade writing. Ive been here for 4 years now and it still falls within the small group of stories i actually wish was cannon. and while perusing the LOZ section recently, i have to say, im kinda disapointed. and im not flaming on any story, or even the stories as a whole, i want to make that abundantly clear(see dislike #2). Allow me to elaborate, you see, link, being a silent character, has an emence amount of potential character development. The sheer possibilities of what you can do with him gives the author almost complete control over hyrules development without completely ruining cannon(not that cannon busting isnt a good read if well written, but i digress). My point is, ive seen sarcastic links, proud links, links that were a little bit of an asshole, but i very rarely see Link, and yes, i capatalized that one on purpose. As i see it, Link, at his core, isnt the hero of (insert timeline), or whatever, he, while determined and courageous, isnt the goddesses chosen one. No, at his core, Link is that scared kid, thrust into events completely out of his control, and he manages to come out on top. I mean, when Ganon heard about Link at first, who thinks he even cared or noticed until the forest temple, or until he burst into his cabin in the forsaken fortress, hell, i dont think he took TP Link seriously until the moment Link kicked his impossibly durable ass! Link, is the underdog. He doesnt know what the hell he's doing, all he knows is its his job to do it. He stumbles on because hes determined not to be bested by an asshole on a millenia long power trip! but i dont really see this coming through. I can appreciate an authors ability to twist Link and the story to fit their idea, i fin it amazing the kind of ideas out there, but something ive seen in the best of stories on this site, is changing the character in a way that still rings true. in other words, GO AHEAD, make Link sarcastic(I like this one alot), make Link arrogant, make Link an asshole, it doesnt matter, but i for one, regardless of his personality, want to see that scared little kid. because anyone who has played the games, or read the fanfiction, has wished they were Link, or at very least IN hyrule. If you havent, then im surprised, i sure did. If you have, i hope you realize, 90%, including myself, would have our asses handed to us in 5 seconds flat. not to mention i'd be fricken TERRORFIED! That scared kid is real, the difference between him and us though, is that he has no choice but to deal with it. so im gonna say it again. DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH LINK! but keep what makes Link, Link, please. huh, i guess this rant turned out to be longer than i though, if anyone even cared enough to not only read my profile, but read this whole damn thing, i thank you whole heartedly. And my view on reviews... Reviews are really special things to a writer. Someone off of Fan Fiction made a nice point about this on their profiles. Page hits mean absolutely nothing. I could go and click on my stories a dozen times in order to get the view count higher. Or someone else could go and do that for me. Reviews are legitimate proof that a reader was utterly touched and impressed with what you have decided to post and are taking the time to tell you. They let you see just what people are thinking when they read your stories, they let you see what people think could be improved, and it gives you motivation to write even more. Reviews are special. And I know I'm not the only person out there who gets super excited when they see a review in their inbox. So please...understand that we writers are not just saying to review because we like repeating ourselves. We like to hear from our readers and hear what they have to say. And we love the love we feel whenever our rview count goes just a little bit higher. "It is better to be a true villain than a false hero." - Weirdbard (Partners in Crime) "If you pretend to feel a certain way, the feeling can become genuine all by accident." - Hei (Darker Than Black) "You know why big brothers are born first? To protect the little ones that come after them." - Ichigo Kurosaki (Bleach) "Eight lethal points…the larynx, spine, lungs, liver, jugular vein, collarbone, kidney, and heart…how do you wish to die?" - Zabuza Momochi(Naruto) "When a person has something precious to protect.. that is when they truly can become strong."- Haku (Naruto) "A sword is never a killer, it is a tool in the killer's hands." - Seneca "Violence isn't always evil. What's evil is the infatuation with violence." - Jim Morrison "A beast does not know that he is a beast, and the nearer a man gets to being a beast, the less he knows it." - George MacDonald "I am what you made me, yet you fear what I've become. Ironic, no?" "Wars do not determine who is Right, only who is Left" (The only person I know who makes this quote, though I know it comes from somewhere else is Wadsworth from Fallout 3) "In War, Truth is the first casualty, and Innoncence is not that far behind" "The thing you should be thinking about isn't whether or not I can actually kill you with the nail clippers, it should be the fact that whether I can or not is irrelevant. No matter if I can or not, you know full well that I'm going to try, and that more than anything else should scare the hell out of you for more than one reason and answer your question right there." - Kenchi618 Some helpful tips to consider while writing: -Listen to how you speak in real life. It helps. -It's called SPELL CHECK people. Use it. -Can your main action character and/or OCs be stopped? Killed? Hurt? If you answered no to any of these, you may want to rethink your story. -Overuse of the comma will be the death of any and all writers. |
