McCoy checked the lab to make sure he was alone before dialing up the hypospray and injecting its contents into his carotid. He felt his chest hitch as the rush of the stimulants flooded his brain. He wanted to feel shame but the crew, and Jim, were teetering on the edge of a knife and needed him to find answers.

McCoy's hands fumbled at the control screen at his suit's wrist. Jim confirmed the start up was good before he lowered the helmet onto the locking ring and sealed the doctor inside.

Five times Jim used the couch in the CMO's office and the one time McCoy used it.

He tried to recall what had landed him in such sorry shape in sickbay but the memories were threads that kept slipping from his grasp. The harder he pulled, the more they slipped from him.

Jim whipped around, sending a spike of pain through his gut. McCoy had materialized on top of a heap of loose wooden and stone debris that had slid from underneath him as the weight of a human suddenly disturbed the pile.

He stopped for a while at the access hatch to the warp core and reminisced about how it seemed so long ago that he was closing Jim's eyes and pulling his still warm body from the reactor room. Jim was characteristically reckless and injury prone but it was rare that he had to get so involved.

Jim is stricken with a childhood illness.

The beam of light swept across each row of seats until it came across a body, still buckled into its harness, slumped over the bulkhead. She gasped at the sight and nearly dropped the flashlight. The body was unmoving but she clambered over the seats anyways to double check.

Indecision made the decision for him. The burn of the lactic acid building up in his tissues was too much and his limbs stopped moving altogether. His denser muscles began pulling him down until he slipped beneath the water.

"I've never failed him before. I brought him back from the dead but I couldn't fix this for him."

If he had finished his speech a half a second sooner he would've seen the drawn phaser aimed at him, if he would've realized what was happening he could've acted sooner...

If he panicked he would start breathing faster, if he started breathing faster he would use up the oxygen more quickly, if he used up the oxygen more quickly then he would die more quickly.

His hands clenched around the tricorder they were holding. Looking frantically at him was a pair of electric blue eyes. He could've cried right then and there at the sight of his best friend looking back at him. Missing scenes from STID.

Jim would've felt uneasy about his crew seeing him so vulnerable if this had happened months ago, but now he was more at home than ever after everything they had been through with Khan and Marcus.

He hoped this would be over soon one way or the other, every time he breathed or twitched the arrow in his side sent new waves of pain radiating throughout his body.
