Meaning of Saniwa:
'Saniwa' in Kanbe Akira's-sensei work Tsuki no Umareru Yoru (translated as We Were Born Under A Moonlight Night) was the Sacred Guardian of the Sacred Spirit of the Deity's Reincarnate, both took form within two human lineages. What made Saniwa unique from any other Guardians is if the master s/he's supposed to serve and protect swayed from the divine path then, setting all attachments Saniwa holds for the Reincarnate aside, s/he must slay the Reincarnate with any possible means. Hence, in order to be a Saniwa, someone must be faithfully devoted yet unattached at the same time when required.

While Shinto belief portrays Saniwa in a similar yet not significantly the same meaning; it refers to a koto player who plays at a purified ceremonial site but had originally signified a person who interpreted and communicated divine revelations (http:///modules/xwords/entry.php?entryID=1315).
