Robin rolls her eyes. "Come on, Steve. She's your ex and he famously beat you up two years ago and now they're dating each other and all three of you somehow ended up a part of this weird little monster-fighting club together. There's gotta be a story there."

Hopper returns after a couple minutes, wiping his hands dry on his jeans, and settles in the armchair. He's looking straight ahead instead of at Steve, but Steve still feels like he's being watched, somehow. Eventually he says, "You wanna tell me what happened there?"

Hopper's number is on the fridge. "For emergencies," he'd told Steve, because it was still risky to have a phone at the cabin at all and it would be even riskier the more they used it. But this is an emergency.

But every night since has been like this—lying awake, staring up at the ceiling, both longing for sleep and dreading it.
