Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Greetings and be welcome. My pseudo here is Elemental Emotions, but you may call me E. My tastes range fairly widely regarding what fandoms I enjoy, and I believe that it’s important for a beta to be knowledgeable about the world and context in which a s
tory takes place in order to do a proper job. That said, some examples of the larger fandoms I’m interested in beta-ing for include; Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, The Hobbit, Boku No Hero Academia, Stephen King’s IT, Twilight, Marvel and DC Universes, anything Disney, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate SG-1, The Black Dagger Brotherhood, The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Inheritance Cycle, DnD, and anything horror related. There are many more I can’t include here. If the fandom you write is not listed, please feel free to ask me as I may be interested. On another note, I have no prejudices or qualms about beta-ing anything. I am not easily offended in the slightest and am completely fine giving my services to stories with any amount of cursing, sex, fetishes, violence, LGBT themes, or illegal/taboo activities or subjects. I’m also completely fine with crossovers, AU’s, OC’s, OOC characters, and any type of plot device imaginable. With that said I am open and available for beta services, and I hope we work well together. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
As a beta, I’m an exacting grammar nazi and a stickler for sentence flow and structure. If I stumble reading it aloud or it sounds strange, I’ll certainly suggest a change. And on that topic, beta-ing is semi-professional constructive criticism. I’ll never use bias motivated criticism (say or correct something just because I personally dislike it or it’s not my cup of tea) or aim to tear down a work or hurt feelings. I’ll treat your writings with the respect I’d hope to have mine treated with, and I expect respect in return. If I make a correction or suggestion you disagree with, I’m not going to argue with you. It’s your story and your final say. However, being rude, belligerent, or mean in the face of a criticism you do not like is a show of poor character and I’ll just leave it at that. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
In my personal writings, I tend to struggle with accidentally switching from first to third person as well as dialogue in general. I also obsess and worry over using 'I' too much or repeating a word often throughout a story, and so glue myself to a thesaurus while writing. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I personally prefer stories rated M more than any other rating, as they often include the more gritty and glossed over sides of life, such as sex or violence. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I’m not a fan of stories that are particularly angsty or incredibly slow burn. I also don't like stories with no real ending or closure, that make you imagine your own ending, or that have an unhappy ending. I’m a happily ever after girl all the way. Main character death can go either way for me, so I’d say it greatly depends but is something that could be touchy. |
