Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Heya~ I like to read fanfictions, obviously! I promise you that I will betaread your story as quickly as I can. Since school is going on rn, my responses are a little more delayed, but I hardly ever take over a week to respond. Whenever I edit stories, I try to tell the writer common mistakes they made so they can keep an eye out for those mistakes in future pieces. If you're going to work with me, I hope that you're willing to talk to me too! One of the authors I beta-read for has become a good friend because we joke around a lot while I edit. I hope I can make relationships like that with future authors I beta-read for as well! I prefer to work over Google Docs (or even e-mail if absolutely necessary) because of the comments I make on fanfictions. There isn't much room for comments through DocX, and since DocX get stripped of formatting, it's the biggest pain ever. I have an e-mail just for fanfics, so if sharing personal info is a concern, you can definitely make a new e-mail for it! My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
GRAMMAR: Grammar necessary. I have a major critical eye for grammar mistakes; grammar is my specialty. Like, give me a red pen and a paper, and I will literally eat it alive until it's perfect. I'm sorry, but ughhh. GRAMMAR. IS. IMPORTANT! On the other hand, I respect that fact that the tone and POV do affect the grammar to an extent, and I will note when grammar does not need to be followed. One major thing I notice a lot in writing is disassociation of pronouns. If I feel it is unclear whom the pronoun is referring to, I will fix it. I also know how to PROPERLY use who and whom. I do not just use whom to sound smarter, and I do not just avoid whom altogether. I do nit-pick at the differences between similar words such as who and whom, effect and affect, amount and number, lay and lie, set and sit, etc. SPELLING: I'd say I am pretty good at spelling. My spelling skills are more along the lines of being able to identify spelling errors. CHARACTERS: I do not typically keep an eye out for IC-ness. However, if you ask me to watch out for it, I will definitely be able to identify when characters are OOC. Sometimes, it'll even be little things that no one will really notice and are basically irrelevant. Essentially, I probably *will* get on your nerves with the little details I point out. RESPONSE TIME: I've been told I'm a pretty fast beta-reader. I don't have much experience with other betas, so I wouldn't know how much truth is in that statement, but I'd like to believe my response time is above par. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
ATTITUDE: I am not MEAN, just unrelenting with critiques. If you get discouraged by comments lining the document, I definitely don't think we'd be a good match. I comment a lot to point out mini errors here and there, most of which could be ignored if the author chooses to do so. I also tend to lace my comments with a lot of sass sometimes. They're not meant to be insulting in any way! In fact, they're usually in jest. If one was in a bad mood or lacks confident in their writing, however, I could definitely do damage to that confidence, which I do not in any way want to do. PLOT: I'm pretty bad when it comes to coming up with plot. For one, it's not my story, and I have no idea what you as an writer are visualizing. Trying to sync with your idea is really hard and something I'd rather not do. I can definitely help if you have two different choices you're trying to choose between, though! |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
TYPE: Please, I would prefer to beta fanfictions about anime and manga. I do have other interests outside of anime and manga, but I do not really wish to pursue fanfictions about these interests. GENRE: Romance. I love romance, mang. I definitely find psychological and humor interesting as well, but romance is my main genre. RATING: I love all ratings. If I were to say what I read most outside of beta-ing, I have the most experience with M-rated fics. SETTINGS: Canon worlds, AUs involving the real world, or fantasy AUs are ideal settings for me. NARRATIVE: Please. I beg you. Give me third-person past POV. I do not care if it's limited or omniscient, but I beg of you to give me these two characteristics. There are certain situations where I will allow first-person. This is only if you manage to keep the grammar relatively close to accurate while writing it. You must also be extremely intrapersonal! Having first-person writing yet only writing about external factors is extremely annoying for me to beta. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
TYPE: I really do not want to read anything outside of anime and manga, like I said before. I also do not want to beta crossovers unless it's characters being pulled into another world. Different worlds I can deal with. Mixing characters from the different worlds is a big no for me. GENRE: I do not have any experience with horror or thriller, and I'd prefer to keep it that way. I also really do not want any parody. Action is only okay if it's also mixed in with something else. An extremely action-driven story is out of my comfort zone. RATING: I don't really care. There aren't any ratings that bother me. SETTINGS: I cannot with sci-fi AUs. I'm sorry. It's not that it doesn't interest me, but I have no experience whatsoever, nor do I want to gain experience in that area. NARRATIVE: First-person present with a stream of conscience is literally my worst enemy. I hate first-person. People who write in present have a tendency to jump around. Stream of conscience... I feel like a lot of people who write with that completely forget grammar is a thing. Sorry, but it's true, and I really don't have the patience to deal with grammar mistakes every other word. If the grammar's good, then I'd actually welcome that type of writing. Stream of conscience is extremely interesting! The grammar is just too often lacking. |
