Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I don't intend to discuss overall plot or direction, as that should be up to the author, but I would love the opportunity to read and critique new stories. Sentence structure, spelling, word choice, all of these can be improved. Actions that don't fit with a character I might question, but I won't complain unnecessarily if you don't decide to accept my suggestions.I think that's about it. I love stories with interesting premises, so try to keep it original, but I will read just about anything. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My vocabulary is probably my greatest strength, along with understanding of when it is appropriate to use. I am fairly well read, and have loved books since I was young so I also have an instinctive grasp of what sounds good. Even when reading the books of established authors my mind goes straight to sentences I'd have rewritten, I am in the habit of wanting to make small adjustments to everything, and hopefully this will give me an opportunity to do so.I also am somewhat impatient, so if you're struggling for motivation my constant nagging ought to do the trick. I genuinely enjoy reading what people have written, no matter the quality, and am always hungry for more. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
- I'm not great at deciding plot direction and have a bad habit of not fully following through with ideas, so I won't be useful for input here- I am currently fairly inexperienced, and will almost certainly break any and all traditions and unspoken rules - Also I live in the UK so if, like most writers on this site, you live in the Americas or Australia, I'll be asleep whenever you would expect a response, and will actually reply at the most awkward time possible - I am known amongst friends for poor organisation, so you might need to prompt me to finish reading whatever you have sent |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer stories set in canon, although interesting AUs can be fun. Stories in canon are simply easier to get a reference point for, so I will be better able to correct descriptions. Similarly I'm not a fan of OCs as I often find them hard to visualise. I love stories with an original and new idea, especially if it contrasts with the norm of the archive, and fresh perspectives on the same key plot points is infinitely interesting for me. Decent characterisation is a must, because if it's too different you're basically writing your own story, just with other people's names and characters.I will beta stories from the PJO/HoO, RWBY, SAO and The Gamer archives. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I dislike stories that deviate extremely from canon to the extent that well known plot points in canon are avoided altogether, or that otherwise reshape canon into an extremely separate AU. OCs and excessive OoCness isn't exactly preferable either, because canon impacts our understanding of characters in fanfiction, and if characters don't fit into this mold then they struggle to catch my attention. Stories with seemingly random plots that are decided on a whim are also not great, because subtle references to your own work is something that I deeply appreciate. |
