I like this dark tone that this fic takes. Its actually exactly the type of fanfic that I was browsing for.

Wow. I remember first finding this story when I was 13 and in Junior High, shortly before Gold and Silver were released in the US, and thinking it was pretty cool. I rediscovered it a few years later after seeing a forum post about the last chapter being released. I reread it and was riveted, much more than the first time. There were some slow points leading up to South Lavender, but everything after that absolutely had me on the edge of my seat. Honestly, that was a tough point in my life, as I had recently moved overseas and was struggling to find my place in everything. Reading your story gave me a huge rush of nostalgia and made me decide to replay the first 2 generations of Pokemon games, and actually helped keep me grounded when everything around me seemed uncertain.

To be honest, the pacing was a little awkward for the first few chapters, and it kind of had the LOST effect, where things are constantly alluded to but never really explained (Even though Lost wasn't even created until a couple years after this story was finished, HAHA!). However I can really see you come into your writing style as the story goes on.

The characterization is amazing. I love how you breathed so much life into characters like Duplica, Giselle, Bruno, and AJ who were just minor footnotes in the Anime. You took the world and made it your own. The foreshadowing you did along the way was also very well done. A lot of people complain about how you characterized Brock, and while I was taken aback at first, the whole "old close friend of the main character betrays him and the main character struggles to let go of his loyalty" was a central point in Ash's character arc. And really, WHO ELSE could have filled that role other than Brock?

I also really liked how the story was kind of a retelling of Red/Blue/The original Anime, where the characters travel through Kanto in roughly the same way, encountering a lot of the same characters, with a few locales left out, and ending with the penultimate climax at Indigo Plateau.

My complaints are few.

First is that the characters are very polarizing; the bad guys are TOO evil and the good guys are almost TOO noble. Although I'll admit, it was amusing watching new characters be introduced. "Minor character from the anime is reintroduced and he's a complete asshole? I wonder how he's going to die." Blaine also died very anticlimactically, and didn't do his Anime character much justice. The Jessie/James/Butch/Cassidy fight also seemed cut short and was unfulfilling.

Second is that while you did a good job wrapping up everything at the end, so much was left unexplained until the last half of Chapter 13.

The last would be that despite this story being actively written almost up to the release of Ruby/Sapphire, the story didn't incorporate anything beyond Red/Blue and the first season of the Anime. However, I think a lot of the charm of this story was that it stuck to the roots planted at the beginning, it would have been weird to just start incorporating stuff from G/S, as this would require explaining how Johto fit into the whole picture. Also some things just plain wouldn't make sense alongside the G/S/C lore (like Lance being a bad guy).

Overall though, these gripes are minor and don't detract much from the overall awesomeness of the entire story.

Now here I am, having graduated college and started my career 7 years ago, 18 years after originally discovering this story. On a whim I just decided to reread it over the last week or so, and its as good as I remembered. I really does rival most published novels I've read and movie series I've seen, especially the ones being released these days. I haven't touched a Pokemon game in years, but still love this story. I'm honestly impressed by how its continued to stand on its own over all these years.

I hope you're doing well Ace. I take it by your sites demise you've moved on to bigger and better things, you most likely have a career and family now. I just wanted to thank you again for pouring yourself into this and creating something that has impacted so many people. Cheers!
