Well, the Foot Clan's thinking they're dead explains the 3 year peace Mikey had. Pity Shredder is so obsessed with complete victory he fails to accept that he did effectively cripple the Hamato clan permanently.

As for the ending, I think Splinter did no service to any of them by not teaching them all how to handle all the roles, just for such an event as most of them being down for the count. Now the only fight capable one is going to have to learn as he goes.
