Ok. This left me hanging.

You know, I don't know the first thing about Sword Art Online, beyond it popularizing (creating?) the "Trapped in an MMO" subgenre of Isekai. But you wrote this so well that I didn't care, because I didn't at once feel that I needede to know anything about SAO beyond that basic outline.

Your characters were very well handled, and whilst Ranma & Nabiki getting together did feel a little out of the blue - a scene showing them admitting their attraction, rather than just an out-of-nowhere line about them being married, would have helped a lot - they really made sense as a couple.

AS for Akane... well, I admit I'm not her biggest fan, but this felt realistic to me. We've seen in canon that Akane is perfectly willing to laud perceived strength over Ranma, and is upset when he restores the status quo. Add in the stress of a year in a legitimately dangerous environment? Yeah, I can see her both storming off and abandoning them as she did early in the story and picking up a bad case of long-simmering resentment that ultimately leads to the climatic duel.

This does stand very well on its own, but it's a damn shame that it's only a one-shot. I'd love to see more of Ranma & Nabiki's relationship, and the epilogue - when they finally get out of the game and their bewildered family has to deal with Akane's hate of Ranma as well as Ranma & Nabiki calling each other their spouse - would have been a true sight to behold.

This was a good story, hope your muse comes back to this one someday lawra :(

I wish that there was more than the one chapter!

When I saw this was only one chapter long, I was kinda bummed. I had been watching for updates to "Cliched Fantasy" for, as you can guess, quite a while. I was so excited to check in on your account and find more of your work with Ranma!

Any sadness I initially had at this stories brevity was more than made up for. This was potent. It played well with the storytelling methodology used in SAO. These tidbits of history painted just enough to give a rich sense of the story as a whole... and you managed to pull legitimate heartbreak out of me over the relationship between Ranma and Akane.

It's been a while since you've posted anything, and I'm not sure you'll ever read this... but thank you for sharing this vision you had. I'm looking forward to catching up with your work, even if it's years overdue.

Is there anymore? There needs to be more. I want to see how this ends.

You just can't say enough ending the only published chapter with a cliffhanger. It's simply not done among civilized people. :(
Anyway, good characterization of Ranma, though you made him a little too much laid back for what I remember of him, but it's a thing that only gives him depth.
Your Nabiki is much less mercenary than canon and fandom want and very balanced, thing this last that not even Takahashi Rumiko managed to do with her. Well done.
Akane? My congratulations. You just nailed her, in ways no one before you did, and I'm trying strongly to remember. Though if I just have to find one thing... I'm just put off by her willingness to kill. She's a piece of work all right, as in canon as in fandom, all right (and only those of the ancient masochist sect of the KOTTF still alive to this day will tell you any differently), but with all the antipathy I have towards her, I have problems to see her as a killer. Though I must give you that it could be justified that the death game SAO had become could have messed her up in the head more than she was at the start.
Now, take that "complete" flag off and plan for at least the next chapter. A cliffhanger is no closure. :P

In lieu of the PM, here's a review. Overall good stuff. The fic moves quickly, but not overly so and does a good job of detailing character evolution without bogging down. Porting Akane and Nabiki into the fic lends a bit more to the plot stability and certainly facilitates a less artificial relationship. Speaking of, once Akane left, you could see the pairing from several light years off- Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. :P

About the only thing that struck me as off was Akane's transformation as a character. It's extreme, but not wholly unbelievable given her baseline. It would really depend on where in Ranma canon as to how I could justify that shift. Not that I can't sympathize nor am I saying it even has to be justified, just that an hp0 duel is a bit surprising. All that said, I'm not exactly fair and balanced when it comes to Akane either.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the duel works out and where you place Ranma in Nabiki in the over arching story.

This is really interesting, though I wonder if the duel to the death is because Akane is angry. Would she make the same declaration against Ranma otherwise? I think that whoever is left alive will be devestated by her careless actions. I'm not certain if Nabiki will forgive the winner. Please continue this story at some point.

Well, I thought it was a pretty great story until Ranma kept getting increasingly pussy-whipped by Nabiki.
