It's safe to say Sal is dead, I mean, murder was mentioned and Michael is alive... in a looser sense of the word. Did Mike kill him? By accident or something? Did he do something that cause Sal to die without killing him himself? Gonna guess he blames himself for something.
Was Michael at least present during Sal's death? Was he blamed for it? But surely if he was found guilty he would still be in prison right? Muder/manslaughter is a pretty serious charge.
If it wasn't Michael... was it one of his parents after finding out about Sal? A classmate? IDK they mentioned school a few times. And if it wasn't Michael, then did whoever killed Sal act out of homophobia? Cause wow poor children...

But yes interesting chapter! Looking forward to seeing what happens and how Michael reacts to the big blue sea, and Australians.

Interesting start, punchy and jumps right into action with him running off somewhere! The anguish and frustration is easy to feel, and it opens up questions, why is Michael like this? What happened with his family? What voices? I'm interested to find out his backstory :)
Hmm, some critique... You might wanna be less generous with the use of ‘then’ and maybe slow down every now and again to add more description where needed, just so people can see what you're seeing and where the characters are etc, but overall a great start! I really like this!
Got Michael just right, all angry and frustrated. And I love how you describe his relationship with his dog, and showing it in his note. It adds a nice touch to his sensitive side.
Interesting take on merfolk mythology. I'm curious to see what else you do with them.
And yay on Oscar for finding him! I wonder how Logan and Wy will react, hopefully in a positive way.
