Just a quick comment: side saddles are completely different from regular saddles- whether English or western (and in fact you can find side saddles in both disciplines).

However you cannot ride side saddle in a normal saddle. Side saddle requires a particular configuration which allows the rider to brace herself (or himself) using the two pommel design. Without this particular design, both the rider and the horse would find side saddle riding extremely uncomfortable because the rider would be unbalanced.

And an uncomfortable horse is an agitated horse. An agitated horse being ridden side saddle without a proper saddle is just asking for the rider to be thrown.

And as I doubt the dwarves would have brought a proper side saddle with them, it would be far far safer to side astride and damn propriety.

...what!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I can't live like this! Ive stayed up for two days reading this masterpiece! It cant end like that. It just cant. Please i beg of you make it a bad dream she had while knocked out. Yeah yeah and then have him like almost being stabbed but then she like runs up and cuts the goblin and then like the goblin turns on her and thorin kills it and saves her but hes really hurt and falls and shes all "no i love you i can't lose you again" and he apologizes and says that he loves her and that she is his arkenstone. And then he passes out and its all beauty and the beast were shes crying but then gandalf comes and telks her everything will be okay and he'll live. He gets better and hes normal thorin again and hes romantic and proposes in the rain and they live HAPPILY ever after! ...dang i just wrote a fanfic based off of fancic. But seriously please please please write an alternate ending...its too beautiful a story to drop like that. You are awesome . Please. :)
